@digiweek 2021: Day 1: Beginning (1998)
When Izumi Koushirou (9) decides to join the football club in third grade, he doesn’t intend to become a star player. Or make any friends. He just wants to join a sports club in which he could blend in before returning back home to his beloved computer. When the teams of the different grades get merged, he becomes nervous - he obviously didn’t expect to get approached by an upperclassmen in such a friendly manner. A fourth grader named Yagami Taichi (10), whom he had never met before. A year before they’d go to Summer Camp - and falling into a strange new world, experiencing quite a different kind of adventure together. Koushirou doesn’t know yet that Taichi will become his best friend - and, one day, maybe even more than that. But this is just the beginning of their story…

Hot Take: What the fuck?
I don’t know what Gen Z is smoking but jeez y’all need to lay off. Shipping is no fun anymore because everyone treats fiction as reality and feels a sense entitlement. For example, I’m sure the BNHA community would really hate the YGO fandom, seeing that we ship everything and a n y t h i n g. God, I can just imagine it now if YGO was a mainstream modern anime:
“You can’t ship that because it’s clearly toxic! He took over his body and killed people.”
“That’s abusive! He killed his father and tried to snuff him out of existence.”
“They are in high school and therefore no matter what age you are as an audience, you are not allowed to be attracted to a ✨fictional character✨.”
“It’s the ✨pedophilia✨for me. You can’t ship a sixteen year old with a three thousand year old spirit. That’s gross.”
“You don’t have the right to draw or write *mature content* about these characters that don’t exist because it’s gross and that makes u a ✨pedo✨.”
“They are all clearly homos and anyone who opposes is irrelevant and stupid.”
“That ship doesn’t makes sense so I’m gonna harass you and bully you until you conform with my ideals. Or kys.”
“It doesn’t matter if this is canon, my ship is better and I will do anything to make it known.”
“You cannot like this person because they are ✨abusive✨ and I am ✨triggered✨.”
“This author dare do something so controversial in their story? They are officially ✨cancelled✨.”
You see where I’m going with this right? Over the last like six years, this has become the norm. People have become hella pressed about fiction and it’s fucking batshit crazy. The YGO fandom is a great example of people minding their own business and letting people ship tf what they want because it doesn’t hurt anyone.
Why has that changed? What happened to crack shippings and being able to write “lemon” without someone holding a knife to your throat? Making fan art of something without someone coming to it and saying you’re wrong for shipping it? Or calling you homophobic or abuse apologists? Why has this become the norm now? Why are people so toxic under the guise of entitlement?
I’ve been shipping cartoon characters since I was in fifth grade and I’m still gonna do what I want cuz you literally can’t stop me but I want to know why this has done such a 180.

A New History of Fandom Purges
On November 24th, 2018, I posted a list of major deletions of sites or of content on sites that stripped fandom of its history. A bunch of pro-shipper blogs had just been deleted, and people were nervous. I suppose I was thinking “All this has happened before…”
On December 3rd, 2018, Tumblr’s Department of Irony announced the NSFW ban. Thanks for providing this salutary lesson to The Youth and a billion reblogs to me, I guess.
Today, we have AO3 for writing. Audio, images, and video are in as much danger as ever, yet fans attack AO3 every donation drive. For those of you who forget our past…

This is only a small taste of the many times that:
Fannish moderators got bored, ran out of money, or had a falling out, deleting a site/list/forum along the way.
Sites got bought out and closed for being unprofitable.
Fandom got hit as governments targeted piracy or political dissidents.
Fans grudge reported each other.
Official forums got deleted when the canon finished.
It’s not always malicious. It’s not always about us. But we lose every time.
Some of these purges hit everyone. Many of them hit m/m content specifically or female gaze-y material in general. This is why antis are dead wrong. This is why anti-fujoshi policies end up being anti-m/m policies. This is why we need clear labeling, not content restrictions.
This is why we need AO3.
And it’s why we need a solution for audio, visuals, and video too.
“We as a fandom have to talk about-” No. No we don’t. You can talk about it if you want to. That’s fine, if that’s how you fandom then go for it. I hope it works out for you because I want you to enjoy your fandom experience. But if I’m in fandom for reasons that’s counter to, then I have no obligation to talk about it. I don’t have to talk about anything except what I want to.
“Okay but you have to talk about your fave’s flaws-” No! No I don’t! I have to be able to acknowledge those flaws when they come up. I have to be able to admit that my character has flaws, and accept when others talk about those flaws. But I don’t have to talk about them if I don’t want to. If I want to only focus on the better aspects of my fave, even if that means just shallowly talking about how hot they are, I can. That’s my choice, that’s how I’ve decided to enjoy them.
Fandom is meant to be fun. Fandom is meant to be a hobby. I don’t have to talk about any aspect of my favorite story or ship or character or writer or anything if I don’t want to. You know what’s not fun? Having to talk about the ways my favorite thing is bad every time I want to talk about it. Having to point out my favorite thing’s flaws instead of the things that makes me enjoy it. Having to disclaim before I get to sing something’s praises because “yeah I know it’s shit BUT”. No. I can know something is bad without needing to talk about it.
Idk dude this sounds like a really great rationalization for wanting to ignore the parts of something that are problematic and not wanting to have to unpack that
Listen. If the way you fandom is to spend all of your time on critical analysis and unpack everything that makes the thing you like problematic, if that’s what you’re about, then go for it. I mean it. If that’s how you get on, then you do you, and I stand by what I said above, I hope it works out for you. I want everyone to be able to enjoy their fandom experience, even if I can’t wrap my head around why the way they fandom is enjoyable.
But I don’t owe anyone anything. If I don’t want to have a big public discussion about how problematic my favorite thing is, then I don’t have to. That’s my choice. I don’t have to perform a requisite level of discourse to be able to enjoy something; I can just enjoy it, and no one else gets a say in that.
It’s not a rationalization, it’s reality. I can fandom sans discourse if that’s the way I choose to fandom. End of sentence.
