Cheetahs don’t have stripes… or do they? 🤔 Meet the “king cheetah” (Acinonyx jubatus)—note the pattern on its back. When scientists first observed this animal in 1926, it was thought to be a new species. Today, we know that “king cheetahs” are the same species as spotted cheetahs, and their unusual patterning is actually the result of a genetic mutation. These individuals are rare: Only a handful of striped cheetahs have ever been seen in the wild.

You can have any animal for a pet. Any complications such as “keeping the animal healthy and happy” and “the time and effort it would take to keep happy and healthy pet” and “keeping yourself uneaten” and “the pet I want is kind of extinct” have all been solved perfectly. You don’t have to think of that.

Some of the reasons I love brick!Gavroche

Every couple months or so, he just randomly decides “Well, I think I’ll go visit my family now!” You know the family that abandoned him, with the dad that “never thinks of him” and the mother that doesn’t love him. He still goes back to them every now and then just because it seems like the thing to do.

And when he goes to visit them and finds out they’ve all been arrested he’s just like “Oh well” and goes on his merry way, singing.

Goes to steal an apple because he realizes he hasn’t eaten in two days or so and just got tired of that shit. Finds out the person he was going to steal from has got basically nothing. Then he sees Montparnasse try and rob and then get owned by this old man (Valjean), who then (after a lecture) gives him the purse he was going to steal. Gavroche doesn’t like this so he picks the pocket of one of the most dangerous criminals in Paris and fucking gives the money to the old man whose apples he was going to take!

This kid has nothing and he’s charitable! He sees a girl in rags shivering and, when he’s not too warmly dressed himself, gives her the shawl he was wearing as a muffler.

He finds two kids on the street with no home, and without any question just decides “Well these are my kids now.” And he fucking buys them dinner, comforts them, and takes them to his “home” inside the elephant!

Which brings up another point that Gavroche isn’t bothered by anything. That elephant monument he lives in? Infested with rats that ate up a cat and would eat him. Does that bother him? Nope, just makes himself a little cage. He gives no fucks.

He’s also a little shit. “‘Monsieur complains?’ ‘About you!’ said the pedestrian. ‘The bureau is closed,’ said Gavroche. ‘I’m receiving no more complaints.”

Basically: Gavroche can actually be pretty kind for a little gamin who you’d expect to be (and sometimes is) pretty self-centered and has a “roll with anything” attitude.

What are some chronic illnesses that can only occur in a fantasy setting?

Partial transformation - mummy rot is slowly turning you to sand, a near miss from a medusa left you with partially stoned body parts, etc.

Hypnotic suggestions from being mind controlled persist after the controller’s death, causing the victim to occasionally take actions to support the cause of a mind flayer cult that no longer exists.

Repeated demonic possession has left the patient with permanent gaps in their soul’s defenses, causing them to immediately get re-possessed if they go outside a consecrated area.

Post-resurrection trauma as the revived soul remembers an unpleasant afterlife.

Magical healing can get very weird if something is stuck in the wound. It’ll get you back on your feet, but you can get outcomes like “there’s a chunk of wood fused into your chest because the magic couldn’t figure out how to get the arrow out of your chest and just healed it in place,” and this can cause mobility issues or infection vectors down the line.

There’s a lot of hybridization happening in a lot of fantasy settings, and that’s just asking for a lot of people with weird half-dragon genetic disorders. Works out fine for some people, not so much for others.

One that I like is the idea that paladins (and anybody else with supernatural immunity to disease) have their own “disease” in the form of severe allergies. If you’re magically insulated from ever catching any disease, ever, your immune system isn’t getting any kind of natural use. So it overreacts to everything. Being immune to being sick makes them “sick.”

Mages that have complications of their own magic, such as Pyromancers overheating if they don’t let off a fireball now and then, or conversely, being prone to hypothermia and needing their fire magic in order to stay warm.
