I was put through conversion therapy as a teenager. There were no electric shocks involved, no chemicals, no beatings. What did happen was a very friendly, charismatic and manipulative woman sat me down twice a week, asked me simple questions about how I experienced attraction and then shamed me and nitpicked every single answer I gave.

It's a subtle psychological torture, no matter how resilient you are it will slowly get under your skin and stay there. Conversion therapy isn't what was portrayed on AHS you idiot children, it's literally the same things I see on twitter every day.

You know how 1st world feminists get told that they don’t need feminism? They’re told that they should be glad they’re not “really oppressed” like the women in 3rd world countries. That things could always be worse.

You know what my mother tells me? She says I don’t need feminism because I should be glad I’m born in an urban city of Pakistan. She says, at least I wasn’t born in a rural area where girls are married off to men twice their age. That things could always be worse.

And our house maid, Shabana, who was married to her uncle at 15 and, at 18, has 2 children, she doesn’t even know what feminism is. She was told by her father that she should be glad her husband doesn’t beat her and hasn’t thrown tehzaab (acid) at her. That things could always be worse.

Queer theory is so funny to me as African because I'll see all these people in the western countries trying to assign meanings to clothes and to pronouns and to parts of their personalities, they'll believe that changing their clothes or their pronouns or their language or their behavior will exempt them from misogyny. And while I understand that it is a condition of the System to keep us all separated, I can't help but bristle at the racism behind this all.

If any of these liberals had bothered to read, they would know that there exists many many communities indigenous to Africa whose languages don't have gendered pronouns, where clothing rules are different. Where men and women dressed the same, where the rules of nudity are different. Where men are effeminate. And in most, if not all of these communities, misogyny will still be rampant.

My community used to allow female to female marriages but all those women were still circumcised. My language does not have "she" or "he" but that did not save any of us from misogyny. My friend's community doesn't even have gendered slurs and she still had to run away when she was 11 so that she wouldn't be circumcised. There is no solution other than uprooting the whole system. Creating more categories does nothing.

Because every time violence against women is exposed like rape, exploitation, trafficking and femicide. The first response isn’t outrage for the victims but damage control for men. the amount of people who when they see a woman crying say "fake" or think it's manipulation is worrisome and dystopian. It happens so often. Nobody ever says this about a man crying ever. A lot of people really think everything women do is manipulation. I know men think this moreso but Ive encountered a lot of women who are like this too. It's actually kind of scary that we can't show emotions without a high probability of being perceived as manipulating. It's like we aren't seen as human, just a stereotype. As if there's some large portion of the female population that wakes up everyday excited to fool people and manipulate them or something, as if we don't have better shit to do or worry about. I've never met this stereotype that's supposedly so common, literally I don't think I've ever met a woman that actually cries to manipulate like that. That's definitely more of thing males do.

And one of the ironies is that when they think about it in any context other than specifically demonizing women who are suffering, they know that crying on purpose is very difficult for the majority of people. That’s just a basic and obvious fact in every other context. When people talk about acting in plays and stuff and whether they have any talent in that arena, one of the most common topics is whether they have the impressive ability to cry on cue. It’s a rare party trick which cannot be accomplished successfully by most people, and they’re completely aware of that blatantly true fact. high school mean girls, mysterious seductresses, self-sacrificing mothers, forever hovering above stovetops and diapers, innocent yet coquettish virgins in white, flowing robes - none of them is an organic image, none of them is real.

they are always clean shaven, full of grace and perfect make-up, long hair, dark lashes to bat at distinguished gentlemen, soft voices and limp wrists. they were made to serve as a self fulfilling prophecies, they were made to be perfect, yet they don't exist.

we were made to believe that our body hair, skin tones, loud voices are unnatural, disgusting. our humanity portrayed as savagery, alien like sickness to be hidden forever in shame. i'm sick of this.
