Autistic character month is a writing/art challenge starting on the first of April 2026. You can participate with writing and art about autistic characters (canonically autistic, or autistic to you; original characters are allowed as well). There are two prompts for each day. You can use just the first prompt, just the second prompt, or both, or replace one of them (or both) with a bonus prompt. You don't have to fill all the prompts / participate every day to participate in the challenge.
You can add your work to the collection on Ao3, tag your tumblr posts about/with your work as #autistic character month 2026, and tag me into your posts directly, and I will reblog them.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
You can find the prompts (as well as additional, more specific, ideas about them!!) below the cut.
For each day, the first prompt is an "autism prompt", and the second prompt (given in bold) is a "general prompt" (sometimes this distinction may seem quite vague). All the "bonus ideas" listed below are more specific interpretations of the "autism prompt"; you may use any of them as a point of inspiration if you like, but you may obviously write about any other different interpretation of the "autism prompt" as well.
Special interest + Music (bonus ideas: infodumping; intense cycles of special interests; sharing a special interest)
Communication difficulties + Intrigue (bonus ideas: not being understood; social cues, eye contact, volume control)
Proprioception & dyspraxia + Sportsball (bonus ideas: not noticing injury; autistic athletes with higher proprioception)
Meeting another autistic person (for the first time) + Childhood (bonus ideas: undiagnosed character (who doesn't know much about autism) meets a diagnosed character, struggles to understand why they click so well; 5 + 1 (or 3 + 1) reasons character A suspects character B is autistic (character A could be autistic themself and seeing parallels); autistic child meets an autistic adult for the first time; meeting someone with the same special interest)
Underrepresented autistic traits + Outdoors (bonus ideas: the bad at maths style autism)
Bad sensory experiences + Overworking yourself
Diagnosis + Reading (bonus ideas: diagnosis later in life, struggling with a diagnosis)
Good sensory experiences + Water (bonus ideas: compression, favorite texture)
Touch + Hair braiding (bonus ideas: touch averse; a character who is simultaneously touch averse and touch starved; accepting / declining touch)
Speech & language (differences / difficulties) + Jack of all trades, master of none (bonus ideas: literalism; speech loss / verbal shutdown; selective mutism)
Stimming + Color (bonus ideas: musical stims; oral stimming; things you didn't realize were stims)
Community & acceptance + Holding hands for comfort
Caretaking + Wound tending
Emotions & Alexithymia + Grief/Mourning
Assistive tools + First date (stim toys, sensory regulation tools like noise-cancelling headphones, communicative devices like AAC, etc)
Empathy & theory of mind + Secret identity (bonus ideas: hyperempathy, hypoempathy, low theory of mind)
Bonus prompts (you can replace any of the "general prompts" (given in bold) above with any of the "general prompts" below, likewise for "autism prompts". You can also combine the bonus prompts however you like).

Autistic Character Month: 'Difficulties and Struggles'
I've got two or three stories for @autistic-character-month that I forgot to post. April was the Easter holidays in Australia, and I worked at a school holiday program, so I was too exhausted most days to proofread and post anything. Here's a very late story about executive function and personal hygiene!
Prompt: Difficulties and Struggles
Fandom: Young Dracula
Rating: T
Word Count: 1.4k
Focus: Robin & Vlad
The warm lamp light on the yellow walls makes the loungeroom glow. Vlad loves thisāSaturday evenings at the Branagh house.
Stories in which nobody dies, told over good food and sugary drinks. Laughter that isnāt at anyoneās expense and doesnāt devolve into screams, stomps, and broken plates. No tense silence, broken only by Renfieldās occasional whimpers that his master is mad at him again.
A warm room, with a warm glow, that isnāt on fire. Furniture that isnāt dusty and a TV that he didnāt have to steal from the compartment under his dadās throne.
Vlad sits tucked into the corner of the light green couch, a pillow hugged to his chest and his best friend beside him. Heās happy. It doesnāt matter that he canāt focus on the filmāsome horror flick about a haunted manor and a woman who shouldāve known better than to go insideābecause he isnāt here for that. Heās here for the company, and the mundanity.
Robin disagrees.
On the other couch, Ian and Paul are talking over each other, voices steadily rising. Robin flinches at each interruption. His eyes remained fixed on the screen, but itās more a show of willpower than genuine interest. Vlad swears he can hear his friendās teeth grinding.
āāI'm telling you, she looked right at meāā
āāBecause you were standing in front of her, you muppetāā
āāShe smiledāā
āāShe laughed for me, youāre not specialāā
āāAt you, bruv. She laughed at youāā
Robin shifts jerkily, then huffs.
Vlad is no longer watching the film, instead preparing to mediate the oncoming sibling spat. He should have talked Ingrid into coming with him. The twins are tolerable when theyāre talking toārather than aboutāher. Thereās something to be said about Branagh men and obliviousness.
āāI could ask her outāā
āāYou couldnāt ask your way out of a paper bagāā
āCan you two shut up for five bloody minutes?!ā Robin snaps, turning his body to glare at the twins. āIngrid wouldnāt be caught dead going out with either of you!ā
The twins are quiet for a second, then:
āOooh.ā Ian leans forward. āTouchy.ā
āAināt that rich, coming from you?ā Paul laughs. āWhenās the last time you went on a date? Or the first time?ā
Robin goes stiff.
āLeave it,ā Vlad mutters, low enough for only Robin to hear. āYou know what theyāre like. Let it go.ā
āWhile weāre talking numbers,ā Ian continues, grinning. āWhen was the last time you took a shower? Grade 6?ā
āNot going to get a girl smelling like a compost bin.ā Paul holds up his hand for Ian to high-five.
Robinās out of the room and on the stairs before Vlad has even registered the movement.
He hesitates, watching the twins fall back into to their previous bickering, then gets up and follows. At least there's only one of Ingrid.
Robinās door is half-closed. Vlad takes that as permission enough to go inside.
Robin is sitting on the edge of his bed, elbows on his knees and hands in his hair. Unlike in the lounge, the dim lighting of Robinās bedroom is not warm, or welcoming, but Vlad can appreciate the sense of familiarity the dark colours and Halloween-style decorations bring.
Robin doesnāt look up.
Vlad closes the door and sits beside him, content to wait. Be a good friend. As he does this, he notices. The way Robinās hair separates itself into thick, heavy-looking sectionsānothing like the usual softness. How itās darker, despite having not been dyed recently. The stench of deodorantāstronger than it should be, like itās been layered.
Vlad frowns.
He hadnāt seen any of this before.
When time wears on and Robin still hasnāt spoken, Vlad initiates.
āTheyāre idiots,ā he says.
āThey arenāt wrong, either. Thatās the problem,ā Robin mutters.
āYou know what theyāre like.ā
Robinās hands slide from his hair and fall heavily into his lap. āItās not as if I like being grotty, itās justā¦ā
Vlad tilts his head. āWhat?ā
Robin sighsālong, and tired, and frustrated. āI know this is going to sound daft,ā he says, ābut it isnāt really about the shower itself. That takes, like, ten minutes? Itās about getting to it.ā
āGetting to it?ā Vlad doesnāt follow. Thereās only one room between Robinās and the main bathroom. It isnāt even the only oneāthere's a smaller bathroom downstairs, which also has a shower, just no tub. Itās fair easier than having to trek down the towerās stairs or navigate up the dungeonās labyrinth.
Robin flops backwards onto his bat-themed doona cover. āIāll think about it. Likeāproperly think about it. Iāll tell myself: āright, Iāll have a shower after thisā, and Iāll mean it. But then I have to get up. I have to grab clothes. I have to strip off, and get the water right, and go through everything it takes to actually get clean, and itāsāā he pauses, mouth pulling into a tight line. āItās just a lot, you know? Itās time I could spend doing something else, so thatās what I do. Then I feel like shit because I didnāt do it and it's even worse next time, like Iām on some kind of failure streak.ā
Vlad watches himāhow Robinās jaw tenses, his hands wave about in obvious frustration, and how he doesnāt meet Vladās eyes. He recognises it for what it is: Shame.
The words donāt make sense, but he knows the emotion behind them, and itās one he hates. He often struggles to understand Robin, but he does his best not to make his friend feel bad for being different. The rest of Stokely has that covered.
This is a problem, Vlad realises, and problems have solutions. Heās good at finding solutions. Schemes, plans, trial and error. Itās his specialty.
He thinks. Robin is overwhelmed, sure, but not by the activity itself. He just needs motivation. Something to make putting the time aside worthwhile.
āHow about I offer some incentive?ā Vlad asks.
Robin frowns. āLike what? Youāll do my homework for a week?ā
āNo,ā Vlad says, smiling. āBetter.ā
Robin pulls himself up. He leans close, locking their eyes with an intense stare. āWhat have you got?ā
āDid you know my dad once met Vlad the Impaler?ā
Robinās mouth falls open. āā¦What?ā
His smile morphs into a face-splitting grin. āProperly met him. Not just being in the same place at the same time, but an actual conversation. Iāve heard the story. Youāll like it.ā
Robinās eyes narrow. āYouāre making that up.ā
āNope.ā
āAnd youāll tell me?ā
āAfter you shower.ā
Robin blinks, then his eyes flick between Vladās and the door. He licks his lips. āPromise youāre not having me on?ā
āYes.ā
Robin sighs through his nose. āFine,ā he says with a decisive nod. āSee you in fifteen.ā

I did the extra one because it fit and was already written. This started a lot of interesting questions. Ones I've been enjoying having.
Not sure what's next, I have a play that starts Monday and an intensive with Terry Knickerbocker next week. I wanted to do medwhumpmay all centering around invisible disabilities... but they didn't do prompts this year. I also may have not noticed that and worked out the entire month's prompts anyways and probably will still do them. I just don't have much time over the next week.
Anyways I appreciate @autistic-character-month for hosting this and I hope this comes back next year!
A little late, but still: autistic character month 2026 is officially over!
At the point I'm writing this, we have 139 works for 43 fandoms (including original work) in the collection. Thank you to everyone who participated!
When I first had the idea of doing this, and honestly when I organized the prompts, I was not sure at all that anyone would try to complete the challenge entirely and write 30 whole works for it. Having three people do this really blew me away!
@parameciam, @mnictasbcl, and @derekzakari, thank you so much for your participation! I don't really know how to say it right, but it was really an honor to see so much of your creative energies dedicated to this challenge. I am really impressed and really grateful!
That being said, I really want to thank everyone else who participated as well! @lovelikehomicide-ao3, @meushell, @rosworms, @newwwwusername, @starlights-aib-sideblog, @salty--sapphic, @shifter-says-ow, @very-far-from-allowing, @theunseeliemperoress, @greenvillainredemption, @mypurplehairisfake, @solariscrowvid, @confusedunit, @gillyporter and everyone else who added to the collection: thank you to each and every one of you! It was wonderful to see your contributions! And if you made something for the challenge and are not tagged in this post, don't hesitate to tell me.
The collection is still open and will remain so indefinitely; if any prompt grabs your attention, you can still write for it and add your work to the collection. I will probably stop checking the tag, but I will continue reblogging anything I am tagged in, so feel free to tag me if you write anything.
I'll make a google form asking about your experiences participating in the challenge and thoughts on the prompts soon, keep an eye out for that. Otherwise, this was wonderful, and I hope we'll do this again next year!
[Image ID: It's a banner for the post. The background image is a scene from the opening of season one of the TGCF donghua, in tones of purple and pink, with stylized silhouettes of heavenly officials walking in the heavens. The text of the banner says: "AUTISTIC CHARACTER MONTH: MASTERPOST. it's also my autism diagnosis anniversary month! double celebration!" There's a cartoon cat carrying a birthday cake on the left side of the text, and an infinite symbol with the pride flag colors, tilted to the left, on the right side of the text. /.End ID]
This is a very special month for me and this event was perfect to celebrate it! So I've written several different fics to participate, all centered on TGCF characters. Yes, in plural! It's not only Quan Yizhen, but of course he's the most recurrent muse for these works :D
I will keep updating this masterpost every day, until the end of the event.

Day 3 - Proprioception
Day 4 - Meltdown + Nightmares

Day 9 - Parallel play
Day 10 - Relationships
Day 11 - Routine

I FINISHED THE AUTISTIC CHARACTER MONTH CHALLENGE!
final word count: 49655 words (!!!!)
Link to the series on AO3 HERE
honestly i still feel quite insane and the adhd won't even give me a sense of real accomplishment LMAO. idk how i did this but i do know why i did it. and i'm glad i decided to do it.
i had (and still have, tbh) too many ideas in store about them all and especially about the autism/nd coded way in which some characters are written. this challenge was a perfect opportunity to explore those ideas without overcomplicating myself as i tend to do.
predictably i focused a lot on quan yizhen because i am the ceo of autistic quan yizhen, but i also felt brave and threw my audhd xie lian in there + my autistic+ocd yin yu. i wrote poetry and also wrote a very experimental thing that made my brain wither while proofreading but was worth it. i got to write about my beloved west trio.
when my spoons replenish i will actually proofread things (i know that there must be plenty of typos and weird stuff since this was all done without a beta and forcing myself to not overthink) and also add proper summaries for all the fics, probably also add stuff in the notes since i always love to yap (but this time, the more i posted the guiltier i felt for posting so much so i guess i didn't want to be perceived) (but i still want people to read my stuff... yeah i know my brain makes zero sense).
it was an excellent writing exercise and i truly feel it got easier for me to get the words out the more i kept going :'D
anyways! i have to especially extra super thank @tinysobek and @sobanvallion for their constant encouragement and support through their comments. and @thelinbean for helping me with many of the plot elements whenever i got stuck. even if you can't actually beta my works you always help me so much. i would have given up on this challenge on like, day 9 if not for you three ;u; and of course, last but not least: all my love and thanks to the organizers of @autistic-character-month for giving us all a chance to explore canon, headcanon and original autistic characters, and open the conversations in fandom about ND characters āø(ļ½”Ė įµ Ė )āøā” the prompts were amazing! thank you for all your hard work <3
i hope whoever reads any of the works i shared this month gets to smile and also to think a bit more about autism and autistic people outside the usual stereotypes and assumptions. there's so much to learn and explore!
@autistic-character-month prompt: Autistic Joy + Makeup
Teen Wolf | Trans Male Stiles | Drag Queen Stiles
Being a man meant being handsome and rugged. Right?
Stiles thought as a trans man, it meant giving up the soft things.
Stiles is twenty-one before he really understands that isn't true.
Because it turns out, queer spaces have a language of their own, and sometimes the most affirming thing someone can say is the last word you ever wanted to hear.
Her name was Valentina Cruz, and she was a Drag Queen who had the sharpest eye Stiles ever encountered outside of a crime scene.
"You want to start with the contour stick," she said, perched on the edge of the vanity table with her arms crossed, watching him the way a coach watches a player who doesn't know they're good yet. "The brown one."
Stiles reached for the nearest one. Valentina's expression didn't change.
"That's Sunbaked Sienna. That's a bronzer. Put it down."
"They're the same color."
"They are not the same color."
"They are objectively ā"
"The other brown. No. Thatās Toasted Walnut. Yes. That one."
Stiles held it up. "There are six browns."
"And you'll learn the difference."

My final entry for @autistic-character-month is here! Going full circle, I guess, since it's a HuaLianQuanYin piece c: And same as yesterday, this is kind of stealing a scene from a wip that I'm not sure if I'll ever finish, but still wanted to share some of the ideas, so... this was my chance.
Stiles has been in love with Lydia Martin since the day she moved to Beacon Hills.
Any time he'd forget, she'd say his name or brush past him and he'd be gone on her all over again.
He thinks that's what love is.
Dr. Morell has a different word for it.
Stiles has been staring at a water stain on the ceiling all night. He came back to it after breakfast, trying to figure out what it looks like when she just appears in the doorway like she's been standing there a while. She doesn't knock, but she never does.
"How are you sleeping?"
āGood morning, Stiles!ā he doesnāt even mimic her voice. āWhy Good morning, Dr. Morrell. How are you?ā he continues giving the other side of the conversation, making fun of how she never does normal conversations. Stiles knows, heās been cataloging normal conversations his entire life. āIām good Stiles. You?ā Stiles returns to his sarcastic parody.
āStiles,ā she states without inflection. Not annoyance, but definitely done.
Stiles sighs. "Roughly.ā Then he turns to glance at her, "You?"

Autistic Character Month: Day 27 - The Wrong Kind of Right
@autistic-character-month prompt: Theory of Mind + Secret Identity
Stiles figures out who the Darach is before anyone else.
Stiles has known for weeks.
He has timestamps, locations, and a brain that catalogued Jennifer Blake as wrong before he even knew her name.
He told Scott.
He told Chris Argent, who believed him but said it wasn't enough. Yet.
Being believed and still told wait is its own particular kind of terrible.
Then his dad doesn't come home.
He hates being so goddamn right.
Two days later, she mentions in passing that she grew up in Beacon Hills, and the way she says it is practiced. He knows practiced. He has practiced. He has whole monologues he's written and rehearsed for situations people navigate instinctively ā how to comfort someone, how to deflect teasing without making it weird, how to signal that you're following the conversation when you're not sure if your face is doing the right thing. He has them all memorized. Jennifer Blake is working from a script. The reference to her childhood is a prop she's picked up and set down before.

Autistic Character Month: Day 26 - Because He Worries
@autistic-character-month prompt: Assistive Tools + First Date
Teen Wolf | Autistic Stiles | Season 1
Stiles gets roped into Scott & Allison's double date at the bowling alley.
Along with Danny.
Because Scott said he could bowl.
He cannot.
Stiles' dad worries though.
This is the first time he's been out with friends beyond Scott.
He's a cop. He totally can spy on his kid without getting caught.
Right?
Scott, who had been claiming since the parking lot that he was very good at bowling, released the ball at an angle and it skittered hard right, vanishing into the gutter before it reached the pins.
Jackson laughed.
Stiles raised his phone.
The app said, in its flat, pleasant voice: "You missed."
"I know I missed," Scott said.
"You missed by a lot."
"I know how much I missed."
"Why did you say you were good at this."
"Stilesā"
"You are terrible at this."
"Okay, we don't have toā"
Lydia, seated on the orange molded bench with her score sheet, uncapped her pen without looking up. "He has a point."
He watched Scott gutter his second attempt before he came back and flopped into the seat on Stiles' other side. "Try using the bumpers next time," the app offered helpfully, and Stiles did not look up from the screen while Scott made a complicated betrayed face at him.
