while jamming my entire body between two closing elevator doors today, i was met with wide eyes, and i thought to myself "this probably looks frightening to people that don't have a thorough technical understanding of how elevators work and the history behind why they are so insanely safe"
and then i remembered the story of the tenured civil engineering professor who, with a running start, would leap and throw himself full-force at skyscraper windows in order to demonstrate their structural properties, until one day the window popped out of the frame, unbroken of course, and he fell to his death
Sorry it's even funnier that Garry Hoy was a lawyer who just sort of thought it'd be fine to run at the window
i keep referencing this stupid image when talking about tsfs so i made a proper edit
Writing period dramas in the discord, lads
@inber you have tapped a deep vein here
Made it all the way to the end straight-faced and then I read 'By Jane Austen' and lost it.
When I was in high school we did an english unit on Octavia Butler and the teacher told us hey btw. You should call her "Butler" in your essays. Sometimes students call female writers by their first names unconsciously, but that's not acceptable. If you wouldnt call them William or Ernest you shouldn't call her Octavia.
And I was like cool whatever I was gonna call her Butler anyways. But that moment has stuck with me for my whole life because once you start seeing ppl calling women by their first names where men would be called by their last names you literally never stop seeing it.
Voting in favor of an online age verification bill should be a career-ending mistake. It should make politicians unelectable for the rest of their lives.
Remember who voted for what and make sure none of these pricks are ever able to forget that you remember
gotta be honest I think a REAL juicy dynamic is when someone has a True Love and a Soulmate and they are two different people
see this person is the love of my life I would follow them anywhere every day is brighter for having them in it. and THIS bastard shares a soul with me we'll find each other in every universe and understand each other in ways no other living being could. neither of us are particularly thrilled about this

im being so serious when i say this but we need to bring back the "my genitals are none of your business" "if gender is whats in my pants then my gender is some loose change" mentality from the late 2010's because too many people on here are openly flirting with exclusionary people who spout enbyphobic rhetoric. stop caring about what people's agabs are you assholes. they literally mean nothing. they're not a zodiac sign or indicative of people's character. you are not wholly pure or wholly evil because of your assigned sex. you're just a person.
"what genitals do you have?" Is sexual harassment regardless if its from a security guard or a chronically online furry
Thinking about the ways Rocky and Grace balance each other out, aside from the whole scientist engineer thing.
Like, despite his big act of cowardice, Grace is usually pretty impulsive. Like the real reason he was the one who needed to go to Tau Ceti (unbeknownst to Stratt) was because there is no way that the original team would have been as uncautious about approaching an alien species.
I'm not saying they would have ignored Rocky, but I'm saying that with the whole planet at stake they probably wouldn't have been as basically trusting, which in turn would have made team work harder, and that team work eventually led to the discovery of Taumoeba.
Stratt's whole reason for bringing Grace onto the project originally was that she knew he had a reputation for coming up with wild new ideas and standing by them, and she needed somebody with that kind of original thinking.
The downside to this, however, is that Grace doesn't tend to think through consequences and will often do self-destructive things on impulse (âstaggering waste of carbonâ).
Rocky, meanwhile, is actually deceptively cautious.
Like he comes across as very direct and forward at firstâ making first contact with the alien, moving into his place, going fishing on Adrian, etcâ but you gotta think that this is after like multiple decades of not achieving anything.
Not achieving anything because he knew that he didn't have the expertise, while he had more than enough fuel to go back home and knew that his whole planet was at stake.
Grace, I think, would have turned back and asked for help in that situation, and turning back would have been the right thing to do. Like there would have been a huge risk associatedâ what if whatever kept Rocky safe from the Mystery Space Disease stopped working and then there was nobody left to communicate with Erid or study Tau Ceti?â but realistically the only way they were gonna solve the problem was by figuring out what went wrong and getting more scientists out there.
(Unrealistically, but fortunately for Rocky, an intelligent alien with super advanced tech came along. But it's not like he could have predicted that!)
Also all of the first contact stuff is very much on Rocky's terms. Rocky sends the first message (which Grace catches with his hands, while Rocky uses a robot). Rocky sets up the tunnel. Like if Grace had been aggressive, Rocky's managing of the situation is such that he wouldn't have been in much danger, and he doesn't actually move into the Hail Mary until he's certain that Grace is harmless.
And both of their major traits are needed to save their planets.
Erid and Earth are saved because Grace figured out how to selectively breed an alien species with no thought whatsoever as to what other traits he might accidentally be breeding in. (And yeah, maybe if he'd thought about it he would have been able to prevent the whole xenonite disaster from happening⌠but equally he might just have realised how dangerous it was, and how impossible to account for every variable and never done it at all.)
They're also saved because Rocky manages to keep Grace from dying of burnout that whole time, and because he introduces revolutionary new ideas to Grace like âwhat if we look at the information more slowly and use visual aids to see if we can think of a different way to tackle the problem, rather than just going with our first reactionâ.
Rocky alone would have died up there without having achieved a thing.
Grace alone would have died up there because he tried to do an EVA sleep deprived or subjected himself to multiple Gs without putting in any safety precautions (he actually tries to do this in the book. After the Adrian incident revealed why its a bad idea. No Rocky is not thrilled by this).
Only together can they save the stars.

As a society, we need to go back to understanding that strangers on the internet are, you know, strangers. I feel lately that I'm seeing a rise in 'An author I love blocked me because they took my comment the wrong way' posts on the ao3 subreddit, and then the comment is them calling the author a fucking bitch or something like that.
Don't do this. Tone doesn't translate well in text, and if you don't have a rapport with that author, they are not going to interpret, 'You're a fucking bitch' as, 'Author I hate you for being so talented and making me feel so keenly.' They're going to interpret it as you being an asshole. You can shit talk with your friends because you have an established relationship with them and can distinguish between playful banter and genuine anger. You do not have this with a stranger, no matter how much you like their fics. You will have a much more pleasant time in fandom and not get cockblocked from interacting with your favorite writers if you remember this.
#I don't often see comments like these when I'm reading a fic but there have been a few that made me raise an eyebrow#I don't know if I would block over someone calling me a bitch on a fic I wrote but I'd probs try to gently tell them it's not right#coz honestly I feel like this is an issue with younger age groups who are new to reading fics and might not understand fandom culture#or at least I hope it's younger people who simply don't know better đŹ#otherwise... yikes
This isn't some esoteric niche aspect of fandom culture, strangers at the potluck also do not like being called a fucking bitch.
People in the comments like "you just need to add a /pos tone indicator to your comment!": strangers at the potluck do not like being told "You're a bitch!" with a smile and a thumbs up.
Wait tho pls tell me non british people have also seen this advert bc itâs amazing and very important to me

People in my notes of my youth liberation post keep asking me if I think kids should be allowed in bars, and it's driving me up the wall for two main reasons:
1. My original post was talking about the ways I watched my mother get harassed for bringing toddlers to *the grocery store.* Jumping to "omg so you think kids should be allowed in BARS?!" is a hell of a stretch.
2. If you have to be 18 or 21 to get into a bar/club, duh, that's not a place for kids. They check ID at the door for a reason. But not every bar is like that. My favorite local bar is actually a brewery and family pub with board games and big tables for game nights. They host food trucks and have a nice outdoor seating area. I have been up there for multiple community events that welcome kids and families. I have literally held a toddler at the pub while their mama got herself a glass of cider from the bar as an "I just stopped breastfeeding and can have a drink again" treat. Family-friendly establishments that also serve alcohol are, like, 100% a thing. Hell, *Applebee's* has both a kids' menu and an alcohol menu.
