We built, and we built, and we built. Never realizing that our backs were breaking and our walls were collapsing. We held in our breaths as we carried the leaning castle on our bare backs, till it pained us and enraged us and broke us down to nothing...

Our happiness was very real. It was only in the end that we had pushed it to the far ends of our own very worst.

A single lock on a fence, untouched like ours on the bridge, hangs alone on the promise of a love that never gives up on itself. The distant lights glimmer in the wake of dusk, imprinting the memory of you in this very place, in distant time.

Over Benches.

I listened with curiously wide open ears to your childhood moments by your childhood playground. We enjoyed our fish ice cream on the benches by the creeping squirrel—one adorably hungry squirrel it was. We had all the love and hope in the world, and we looked straight ahead to the future. We never looked back; we never frowned upon our misfortunes or our misdirection. We never faltered in the midst of conflict, because we knew that our love is what mattered. 

The heart is a brittle sheet of tissue wrapped around the very core of its own chambers. A lifetime may not heal its wounds, but with love it can do so much more.

Lavender.

Despite our unwritten promises we failed to make it there, or here. Maybe this just isn’t the right year. Sometimes promises of the heart are nothing but moments that get stuck to that time, and no matter how hard we try it doesn’t seem to come any closer to our present moments. But with love and life, sometimes anything is possible.

I believe in this sometimes.

Town Hall.

The excitement that glowed in your smile when you talked about taking me to play the pop-up piano that first summer, it’s still fresh in my mind like it was yesterday. 

Play with me again, I pray—without worrying about anything but our own nervousness and whether we’re loving enough.

First Kiss.

We got on the train home from our station, so happy yet so nervous from all the butterflies our stomachs could barely hold. You walked me across, and as I uttered those little life-changing syllables, you gave me the most amazing kiss our hearts had never known. 

You were home, and now we were home. I believe that all we had built was much more than where pain has brought us today. I believe that the most fundamental being that is us is still somehow very much alive, and has a very real and tangible future. 

Please let time wipe away all that wasn’t meant to be. For our hearts deserve to be filled with love and not everything surrounding that love that wasn’t us. For they deserve the changes that has only now become clear in both our minds and our hearts, in time.

Roth Regatta

I searched all over for you. I was excited, but I was scared too. My heart calmed when you stood by me; it was our first Regatta. That was two years ago today. 

And today we planned to see cherry blossoms at the festival, but instead we’re here. Alone. In silence. We have so much to say, so much to hold onto, so much to fight for, so much to remember. But the time will only come when time allows, when we’re both done battling against ourselves—when our hearts give in to love.

First Falling.

Two years ago, tonight. Every nerve, every fiber within us was excited; every glance filled with so much overwhelming emotion and uncertainty. 

We were nervous, but we were brave. We took a chance to open our hearts and let love in. Nothing else mattered. Nothing else could compare to the love we didn’t both know existed. Nothing could shatter that moment of pure feeling, not even knowing what it was exactly or what to do with it. 

It was your courage that showed me true love was possible. Please keep that courage strong, and let me love you more than ever before.

Bowne Park.

This was the path we’d chosen that day; this was the place where you talked about your childhood memories... 

I could see a small, skinny silhouette running in the snow though there was none—it felt like winter, though. I could feel you walking beside me, not affected by the freezing winds because it was spring that day. We were loved and we were warm, and we intended to stay that way forever.

World’s Fair Marina

They were but silhouettes before the setting sun—permanently imprinted, as were our first memories here. 

Its sparkles reflected what we held dear in our hearts, and all the surrounding air danced in sensual harmony.

Barricade.

All that once defined us has now been locked in and preserved until time and love can set it free again to be ours. 

From this corner of my view the details of some of our days are being replayed in these same alleyways where our memories remain.

Moonlight.

It was so clear tonight, and again the lights and the traveling stars were so visible to the naked eye. 

Landing. Taking flight. Landing. I wished that was us, finally ready to land after so much time spent flying in the thick fog of yesterday..

Fog. 

It was so thick it almost completely enveloped the glowing lights in the Woods. It was just like us now, I pondered. I wasn’t sure if I’d preferred it this way or if I’d rather see things with more clarity.

Above and Below

I looked forever to find our lock again, to find our love again. Then I realized that it had already been lost.

But being in that spot we used to enjoy so much, I realized that our lock may have been taken, but our love shines like all those lights and the traveling star in the sky.. that even when the core of our very foundation is destroyed, we can still build ourselves a stronger and brighter future, together.
