i think the next trend for cishet white parents naming their baby sons will be fish names. Pike. Perch. Trout. Sturgeon. it's one of the few classes of nouns that has masculine enough associations (bc of fishing) to be plausible for this purpose
I'm looking forward to meeting Sturgeon Theodore.

There’s a really deep and well researched podcast on these kinds of black community massacres called Dreams of Black Wall Street. It’s covered the Greenwood, Tulsa and Okoe massacres as well as Rosewood and others. I already knew these things happened generally, but the set up of context, scope, details of the events and the generational effects that it illuminates, have both blown my mind and given me an even deeper appreciation for black survival and joy in country the United States, even though I was already about my people.
If you care about the histories and liberation of oppressed peoples, this is an important one to listen to.

you know how all those applesauce packets were recalled for lead?
well. it turns out the cinnamon used in them may have been laced with lead on purpose.

fun times in the united states food industry right now am I right folks
In case you’re a buffoon (like me) and thought someone was out here meticulously hand-poisoning applesauce:
An FDA spokesperson said that one of the agency’s theories for the WanaBana cinnamon applesauce contamination was “economically motivated adulteration.” (…)
Economically motivated adulteration, or “food fraud,” can occur when a cheaper ingredient is added to a product to enhance it or bulk it up, but is not disclosed, according to the FDA. One example, the agency said, is when lead-based dyes are added to spices to give the product a certain color.
We love cutting corners to maximize profit at the expense of our consumers
hand-poisoning applesauce would be too tedious. these applesauces were poisoned in bulk for maximum efficiency

This is crazy. I wonder if there’s some sort of historical basis for the rural landowners in America being wealthy reactionaries who just make other people do their work for them
Happy to report that “a new threat has emerged”. The latest development in the goat saga is that the goat is being eaten alive by birds. This has, according to experts on the news, never happened before.
It's because they're using a new hay collection method which means the hay is FULL of seedheads, which it never has been before. They basically put a gigantic pile of seeds in the middle of a park in winter, so naturally every bird in the city is like "oh shit, low effort high calorie food! Fuck yes a little treat for me" and is just homing in on the goat like a missile.
It's a great glut of food for them in the winter! Not so great for the goat, who has become an all you can eat buffet for hungry winter birds.
Birds don't normally go for the goat because its just plain hay, which isn't really edible for birds. But like. A giant seed treat is a different story.
And because nobody is allowed near the goat obviously nobody can chase off the birds. Which means all those jackdaws are going to their jackdaw mates and going "hey, did you hear there's a giant easy seed buffet in the middle of town?" Because they're very social birds who spread information like food deposits and threats, which means there's a whole network of birds who
A: know the goat exists
B: know it is full of easy calories, a rare thing in the winter months
C: know they won't be chased off it by humans all that much
D: know it is gigantic and full of nice little crevices for a little bird to rest on while they eat
Which is why there's quite so many birds flocking to it.
And the straw isn't like, deeplu glued in or anything because literally why would they? They build these goats expecting the weather and arson to be the biggest problem, they absolutely did not plan for many sharp, narrow little beaks yanking out mouthfuls of hay to get at the seeds, which is whats happening. Someone removing the hay from it has never really been like an issue. Every few birds probably dislodges like, a hand full of hay? Which really starts to build up, especially since its very hard to stop the birds now they know its there.
Just finished my Autumn Leaves pattern in time for November! by Complete-Ambition385
This is why “credit the artist” is so critical.
I showed this to my mom. She flipped her shit. Wants the pattern. I clicked the link. Got to the original, which had a link to the pattern. Mom is buying the pattern, artist makes money.
While I’m there, I notice it’s had dozens of hits in the last 24 hours. Why? Because its making rounds on tumblr and somebody credited the artist.
Great job, OP.
This is so beautiful! I wish I knew someone who did needlework so I could gift them this pattern.
hey guys who wants to see a christmas decoration someone in my area put up

what is something you hate about the way that badass/strong women are usually written?
constant quipping
too overcompetant/perfect
too straight
too white
not allowed to form bonds/relationships with other women
"I grew up around 7 brothers"

" showing emotions make you weak"

oh your pronouns are he/they?
well that’s mathematically incorrect becuase you can still simplify the fraction since both sides have “he”
making your pronouns technically 1/ty

Someone I know not well enough to voice my opinion on the subject said something like why didn’t God make potatoes a low-calorie food so I am here to say: God made them like that because their nutrition density IS what makes them healthy. By God I mean Andean agricultural technicians. Potato is healthy BECAUSE potato holds calories and vitamins. Do not malign potato
For all evolutionary history, life has struggled against calorie deficit… So much energy goes into finding food that there is no time for anything else. Our ancestors selectively bred root vegetables to create the potato, so that we might be the first species whose daily existence doesn’t consist of trying to find the nutrients necessary for survival. One potato can rival the calorie count of many hours of foraging… Eat a potato, and you free up so much time to create and build and connect with your fellow man. Without potato where would you be?? Do not stand on the shoulders of giants and think thyself tall!!
I nearly teared up reading “Andean agricultural technicians” bc fuck yes! these were members of Pre-Inca cultures who lived 7 to 10 thousand years ago, and they were scientists! food scientists and researchers and farmers whose names and language we can never know, who lived an inconceivably long time ago (pre-dating ancient civilizations in Egypt, China, India, Greece, and even some parts of Mesopotamia) and we are separated by millennia of time and history, but still for thousands of years the fruits vegetables of their labor and research have continued to nourish countless human lives, how is that not the most earthly form of a true miracle??? anyway yes potatoes are beautiful, salute their creators.
There are approximately 4000 varieties of potato in Peru. I’ve seen an incredible variety of corn and tomatoes, and root vegetables I’ve never seen before, on the local farmer markets. Yet some expats insist on buying only imported, expensive American brands of canned veggies… 🤷🏼♀️ Peruvian potatoes 👇🏼
It is long since time for us to start viewing plant domestication as the bioscience that it is. Because while the Andeans were creating potatoes, the ancient Mesoamericans were turning teosinte into corn:
And then there’s bananas, from Papua New Guinea:
These were not small, random changes, this was real concerted effort over years to turn inedible things into highly edible ones. And I’m convinced the main reason we’re reluctant to call them scientific achievements is, well, a racist one.
And it’s such a shame too, cause this was probably the most impotrant scientific effort in human history, it bought us the time to do everything else we do, to go from just trying to get enough calories every day to everything we do now, it game people the freedom to do other things with their lives, human society would not have existed as it is today without this
We need to appreciate our ancient food scientists
Potatoes are one of the best foods ever.amd I for one admire the ancient agrisciemce tjat created them.
