Okay, but seriously on the topic of straight people being so overly concerned about their children being exposed to homosexuality…

As some of you know, I am a makeup artist in a holistic beauty boutique in a very wealthy area of eastern New York. The week before Halloween I was offering simple costume makeup designs for both adults and children. So my last client of the evening was a 15 year old girl who came in to get her makeup done for the Halloween dance at her school. I was enjoying a conversation with both the girl and her mother when suddenly the topic of transgender came up. I got a little nervous because I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut when I hear people speaking negatively about these sorts of topics and as I mentioned, my store is in a very upscale, white, conservative area…

Anyway, the girl starts telling us that her friend prefers to be a boy now. She says it very simply and comfortably and it made me happy to see her talk about it as if it was really no big deal.

Her mother says

“How does she even know what transgender is though? She’s a little young to be making a decision like that. I really think the media is taking things too far with all this gay stuff. I’m not against it or anything, but didn’t you just tell me two boys in your class are dating too?”

The girl said that yes, two boys she knew were dating and another boy she knew was gay also. (And she also corrected the pronouns her mother used for her friend)

“I don’t mind that she knows that homosexuality is,” the mother said. “But I don’t think it should be taught at such a young age. Did you know it’s on Disney channel now?”

It took me a moment to respond, I just kept painting the girl’s face until I could figure out what I wanted to say.

“Well,” I said. “We tend to teach heterosexuality literally from the time a child is born. Most children’s books and movies are even centered around a romance of some kind like a Prince and a Princess for example. There’s rarely a children’s movie that comes out where the main male and female character don’t end up marrying each other in the end. If we don’t have a problem flooding our children’s minds with heterosexuality from the time they are able to sit up and watch a movie on their own, what is so wrong with showing them two boys or two girls being in love? We aren’t showing them sex. We aren’t showing them anything inappropriate. Since when is love inappropriate? If we show them love in all it’s forms (be it gay or straight) from an early age, they will see that it’s all perfectly normal and natural and maybe we can finally put homophobic the past…”

The woman considered this for a second and then said “I just feel like they see it and then they start to think that they might be too.”

“And maybe they are. But isn’t it better for them to know that it’s okay? They aren’t hurting anyone.”

Then the girl said. “No ones going around just thinking they are gay because they know what gay is, mom. I know what a chicken is, that doesn’t mean I’m going to wake up tomorrow and start clucking.”

I loved this kid. I hope she does well in all of her endeavors

Why you should be using pre-made activity boxes

Christine’s dementia had progressed, but her very-successful morning routine was still the same. Every morning, Christine’s son would wake her up, get her seated at the dining room table, and prepare her breakfast. While he was getting that ready to go, he’d take out a box of towels from under the table. “Mom, I have a ton of laundry to do today. Can you please help me with these?” he’d ask. He’d put all the towels on the table and then watch as his mother went to work. It was a fantastic way to get her day started, wake her up a little more before breakfast, and help her to feel successful before 8 AM. 

I’ve used activity boxes in every single home care or dementia care community I’ve ever worked in. They are so easy and fun to make, and they make every day better in dementia care.

All you need is a bin with a lid and some imagination. I’ve filled bins with items like:

Socks to sort

Hand towels to fold

Faux flowers to arrange in vases

Silverware to organize

Poker chips to stack

…and much, much more.

These boxes can be used to break up boredom, add some extra activities during the day, or simply provide hands-on cognitive stimulation when nothing else seems to be working.

While most of us hate doing chores, many people with dementia feel useful and successful after completing these activity boxes. 

Here’s the key: don’t ask if the person with dementia WANTS to do it. Ask them if they “can help you” work on the task. You’re almost always going to get a positive response.

My best friend had a horrible top surgery experience, and his surgeon doesn’t seem to care. He is raising money to get a second opinion and (hopefully) another surgery to fix what his first surgeon did. Anyone can look at these pictures and realize that is NOT right.

So even if you cannot donate, please reblog and share this. My best friend is entirely broken over this and is strongly fighting a deep depression because of it.

He deserves happiness, and was so close to finally reaching it before this happened. I want nothing more than for him to love himself when he sees himself, including with his shirt off.

The surgeon that did this is Dr. Herman Houin. He works for Henry Ford and this surgery took place at the Fairlane Dearborn location. Eli doesn’t get on tumblr that often, but message me if you guys have any questions/suggestions for anything. Thank you all SO much for the love and support. It means a lot to Eli and means a lot to me as well. Just seeing the love and support he is getting is significantly increasing his mood on a day to day basis, which has me so happy. Why TME Ace Exclusionists Are Especially Susceptible To TERF Recruitment Tactics

first of all, check out this (x) post first. it’s required reading.  when you want to indoctrinate someone into an ideology they find repulsive, the first thing you do is introduce them to the themes of that ideology but package it in a way that they’ll accept.  we’ll call the person being groomed to accept TERF ideology the “mark”. con man terminology seems fitting. 

If you want to turn them against a group they currently want to protect (we’ll call this group A), then you need to first introduce them to all the arguments you’ll use to demonize group A in a setting where they’ll be open to accepting these arguments.  the easiest way to do this is to use these same arguments and tactics to demonize another group that your mark feels neutral/volatile toward, and we’ll call this group B. keep the tactics the same, keep your means of propaganda the same- but pick an acceptable target. a target that won’t make your mark feel a defensive gut reaction like they would if you attacked group A off the bat.  as long as you convince your mark that your reasons for despising group B are valid, then if you play your cards right and indoctrinate them deeply enough into hating group B, they’ll be far more open to accepting your ideology when you say that group A is evil for the same reasons as group B. this is propaganda, cult mentality, and scapegoating 101.  but the most important factor in this is making sure all of your arguments used against group B are nearly identical to those used against group A. You slowly get your mark to recognize these arguments as totally logical and valid reasons to despise a group of people, so that when you reveal that group A supposedly shares those traits with group B, your mark won’t be able to claim that your hatred of group A is wrong without also admitting their hatred of group B was also wrong. and at this point, your mark will be so deeply entrenched in a hatred for group B that their pride and anger won’t allow them to admit that their hatred isn’t grounded in logic.  they’ll declare group A to be their enemy sooner than they’ll swallow their pride and admit they were wrong to hate group B.  this is why TERF’s are almost exclusively ace exclusionists, and why there’s screenshots floating around of TERFs admitting that ace exclusionism helped them “realize” that TERF ideology was “right”.  “WORDS MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS WHEN YOU CHANGE THEM, SO IT DOESN’T MATTER IF ACE EXCLUSIONIST RHETORIC READS JUST LIKE TERF RHETORIC BUT WITH 'TRANSGENDER’ SWITCHED WITH 'ASEXUAL’!” The fact that TERFs and acephobes used the same arguments couldn’t be more relevant, because you’re being groomed to accept these arguments as being logical so that you’ll be susceptible to recruitment when you see the same argumentative points coming from TERFs.
