do u guys think the universal translator sometimes has to add context for words that aren’t directly translatable. Like a human calls a vulcan a nerd and it comes out as smart (derogatory)
Maps matter. Map 1 over-represents territory. Map 2 is weighted by where people live …
Right. Plus, a lot of blue people live in those red areas. Rural districts tend to be dominated politically by those who control the land and resources. The owners are overwhelmingly conservative, and they are able to control the politics of the lands and people they own, but a lot of people suffer for it.
boy, he’s super close to admitting that a straight-up vote can’t win the republicans anything so they feel entitled to cheat.
people who all cram into apartments in los angelos and new york, alot of which are fucking illegal immigrants, shouldn’t decide the fate of a whole nation when they have no idea the needs of rural america.
So, first of all, this is a GREAT example of how racism feeds into the Electoral College. Undocumented immigrants don’t vote, and the idea that cities somehow breed more voter fraud BECAUSE they are more diverse, or that POOR people, people who, say, live in APARTMENTS instead of being LAND OWNERS is such old-timey classism to be laughable.
And that’s SO MUCH of the rhetoric around the EC. People talk about how they don’t want “Urban” or “City” people making choices, and 99% of the time, that’s just code for “black” and “brown” and “Jewish” and “Gay” because you bigots think that 1. Only minorities live in cities and minorities ONLY live in cities and 2. You don’t want anyone who isn’t a WASP-y Farmer voting apparently.
Like, you’re argument is literally “cities have more poor brown people, and I don’t think their votes should count.” So FUCK YOU.
Also, cities WOULDN’T dominate in the popular vote.
Really? What about the BIG CITIES?
#1 New York City. 8,601,186
#2LosAngelesCalifornia 4,057,841
#3Chicago,Illinois 2,679,044
#4Houston,Texas 2,359,480
#5Phoenix,Arizona 1,711,356
#6 Philadelphia,Pennsylvania 1,576,596
Those 6 cities, combined, have less than 22 million people. The US has 327 million.
And this is my point- the US is not made of a small handful of huge cities. The vast majority of the country lives in SMALL cities and towns, under a million people each, and their suburbs.
So, no, with the Popular Vote, you could not pander just to the biggest cities and be done with it. If you add up EVERY SINGLE CITY with more than 100,000 people in it (Which is 311 cities), that’s still only 94 million. 28% of the US population.
Even if ALL the ~poor brown people~ that you want to stop from voting lived EXCLUSIVELY in cities (which they don’t, you fucking racist), the popular vote DOESN’T actually empower cities.
The EC ALSO doesn’t actually help rural (”white land owning”) populations (you fucking racist, you don’t even know the racial or economic breakdown of the rural areas you claim to care about). In fact, the EC makes things worse for rural areas. 46 states have an urban majority, and “winner-take-all” laws that have been enacted by state legislatures in 48 states. So if there is a stark divide between rural and urban populations, in 46 states, the urban votes will win and 100% of the electoral points will go to the urban side (Where YOU think all the poor brown people live, again, you fucking racist).
However, in a popular vote system, no one’s vote would get thrown away like that, and everyone’s vote would be counted equally in the final tally. The popular vote would actually give MORE voice to rural populations that are all but completely erased in our current system.
And it is important to remember that in reality cities do not vote in perfect blocks. Neither do states. Even the most liberal city has conservative voters and even the deepest rural hellholes in Texas has progressives (I was one of them until I moved for college!) Those people matter. Those people should count.
Why not have a system where CITIZENS elect the president? Why does it matter which state someone lives in, if all votes should count equally? (I mean, I know YOU think that POOR BROWN PEOPLE shouldn’t be voting, you fucking racist, but ya know, for the rest of us who actually value the idea of a democracy)
This is a REALLY good website about the popular vote and it debunks a lot of common myths about the Electoral college.

Mark has unrequited feelings for Roger and it's fucking canon (probably)
I was listening to Rent last night and holy shit. Mark/Roger is a novel pairing to many, but from what I understand, a lot of people base it on a hunch. However, upon my last listen to Rent, a lot of fucking things crashed down on me, and I am quite certain that Mark has feelings for Roger and this can be proven canonically. It is extremely subtle, and I don’t think anyone would pick up on this upon the first listen. But once you discover it, it’s undeniable.
There are a few things in the show that point to some unrequited Mark/Roger.
1. “We light candles!”/ “Would you light my candle?” Parallel
Ok, this fucking took me off guard when I realized it. Obviously, in Light My Candle, Mimi is trying to get Roger to pursue a relationship with her. The candle is a symbol for connection, a relationship. What does Mark say in the title song? We. Light. Candles. He and Roger have an insanely close connection and relationship already, and it helps them get through the tough shit in life, because they’ll always have each other.
1. The “I Should Tell You” melody
Most of this analysis is centered around the “I Should Tell You” melody, so understanding its meaning in context is crucial. Allow me to outline a few things for you.
In Act One, the “I Should Tell You” melody makes its first appearance. It’s first used in Another Day when Roger wants to tell Mimi something, but doesn’t. Later, in Christmas Bells, Mark, Roger, and Mimi all sing this with one another, but whatever they need to tell each other goes unsaid. Later in Act One, Mimi and Roger finally articulate their feelings for one another in their duet, I Should Tell You. From this, we can conclude two things:
1) The “I should tell you” melody and lyrics represent something that has been left unsaid
2) it also involves romantic connotations
It’s also worth noting, that Roger and Mimi (and eventually Mark) never finish their sentence when they say “I should tell you…” Keep this in mind.
2. Christmas Bells
This is a big one for me. In Christmas Bells, towards the end of the song when the music climaxes into a giant cacophony of sound, Mark, Roger, and Mimi step into a table and sing “I should tell you,” repeatedly in unison. We obviously know what Roger and Mimi are singing this for, but why the fuck is Mark singing with them? WHAT THE FUCK IS HE TRYING TO SAY? In the show, the “I should tell you,” lyrics clearly have a romantic connotation. Some might argue with this in mind, Mark could be thinking about Maureen, but this doesn’t make sense as Maureen isn’t even on stage, and he’s singing with Roger and Mimi. What conclusion can we draw from this? What’s going on in Mark’s mind? Remember, we’ve already established that the “I should tell you” melody and lyrics represent something that’s not being said, and that it has romantic implications.
3. Goodbye Love
Goodbye Love is undeniably the strongest scene Mark and Roger share together in the show, no matter what context. Their friendship is put to the test here, and we see how much these men really know about each other, and how well they can see through one another. However, let’s dig a little deeper.
In Goodbye Love, Mark and Roger share a very emotionally charged fight. They scream and point out each other’s flaws before Roger leaves to Sante Fe. After hurling accusations towards each other, they’re silent, and the “I Should Tell You” melody plays in the background. This melody has previously only been heard when Roger and Mimi share a moment. So what can we make of this? Everything in the show has lead me to believe that this melody tells us that something is going unsaid and it has romantic implications. Could it be that Mark wants to tell Roger that he can’t leave to Santa Fe, because he loves him? Of course, he can’t say this, because Roger is clearly still in love with Mimi, as much as he won’t admit it. Some might argue that this melodic implication doesn’t apply to Mark and Roger since Mimi is listening to the conversation, but I think this is false. When Mimi makes her presence known, the melody abruptly cuts off. To me, this makes it obvious that the melody in that moment was meant for Mark and Roger ALONE.
4. Finale
Remember how I said that Roger, Mimi, and Mark never finished their “I should tell you…” sentences?
In the finale, Roger and Mimi finally finish what they’re trying to say.
“I should tell you… I love you.”
“I should tell you… I have always loved you.”
So. What does Mark want to say? You be the judge.
The actor for Mark in the tour is doing God’s work.
Okay but Lazy Domestic Mark and Roger
Lounging in the apartment with no utilitize/utilities that turn off, bundling together for heat or basking awkwardly in their boxers to cool off
Any time Mark does anything not fully clothed, Roger wolf whistles at him and he feels simultaneously flustered and insecure
Roger with his don't-touch-me attitude pulling Mark into his lap during conversations - the first time he did that everyone at the table choked a little
Mark waking up at decent times in the day and Roger NOT HAVING IT when the other gets out of bed every morning
Mark wearing Roger's shirts and jackets and Roger not being way too happy about it
Random/casual compliments and reminders that they love each other since both have relationship trauma
"I love you, you know" "I'm not going anywhere" but said casually, like Bros
The gang hardly noticed that anything changed and they had to tell them that they were together
Mark being a SIMP and Roger fondimg it sweet but being concerned
I believe very strongly in “I didn’t say it was good, I said I liked it”
but what might be even more important is “I didn’t say it was bad, I said I hated it”
I just wanna say if you hate something good because it sends terrible messages that’s fine but you can also just hate it because you hate it. free yourself of the struggle to find a “good enough” reason. sometimes it doesn’t hit right.
“I hate this author’s writing style”
is not the same as
“this author is bad at writing”

for real i’m so sick of everyone blaming women when their asshole partners share their PRIVATE, CONSENSUAL pictures with the public

THIS IS FOR EVERY GENDER
I don’t remember the name but there was a case where a woman sued her ex for sharing the nudes she send him and she won because she consented to send him the nudes, not to public them anywhere.
If I remember the post correctly you can sue people who leak them due to the fact while there was consent to send them, there was not consent for distribution. So sue away!

I understand the appeal of wanting every adult hero to instinctively adopt teenage Peter Parker, but can it really beat the hilarity of acknowledging that at 15 Peter was 5'10", unusually buff, went by a moniker with Man in it, wore a creepy full face mask, and had a tightly guarded secret identity and probably a Queens accent thick enough to have come out of a jello mold, and adult heroes reasonably responded to him by going, “Wow, this grown man is an immature asshole for no reason.”
Way funnier to me than adult heroes finding out Peter is a teenager and becoming Concerned is the idea of adult heroes Retroactively finding out Peter Was a teenager because he admits to being like. 22 and they’re like “Hang on you’ve been doing this for like. Seven years.” and he’s like “Haha crazy right? Anyway it’s too late for you to yell at me about that because the statue of limitations on that lecture ran out when I turned 18”
YEAH this trope is instantly more tolerable if it’s fully adult Peter being like, *listen up whippersnappers because I’ve been around the block voice* “I’m thirty, and—” and Tony Stark, who vaguely assumed Spider-Man is maybe two years older than him because he just has that energy and hasn’t reassessed this for four presidential terms, is like, *drunkenly doing math* “You’re how many”
Okay but…them trying to talk about Old People Stuff with him, not realizing that he wasn’t alive to remember xyz thing happening, never used xyz technology bc he didn’t exist yet, not expecting him to agree with the fact that some ppl were saying songs they grew up to were oldies, etc
The thing about Peter Parker is that he was raised by senior citizens the way other heroes are raised by wolves. He has the body of an Olympic gymnast and the soul of a malcontented geriatric. This likely contributed to the perpetuation of the accidental ruse.
It’s when he channels Aunt May so hard he makes it sound like he was personally and immediately affected by McCarthyism that the time traveler fringe theory starts really picking up bets.
