“okay, mia, don’t freak out,” she probably looked crazy talking to herself, but she couldn’t help it - she was in washington dc and not genovia, where she should be. “just think, what would grandma do? she wouldn’t be freaking out like this,” she took a few deep breaths, before turning to look for someone to help her. “hey!” she called, waving to the first person she spotted. “do you know why there’s no flights going to genovia from here?” she asked. “I sort of have to get back there as soon as I possibly can,”

the confusion, the stress, the talking-to-yourself -- steven remembered it well. heck, it still laid heavy on him some nights ! was everyone alright ? was anyone else in the city ? was he doomed to be without them for the rest of his life ? and flights had no bearing on that -- he couldn’t even get back through lion’s mane !  ...but not everyone had a pink lion with a beautiful dimension inside his mane that one could use for teleportation. case in point ? the woman approaching him, asking about flights. “ genovia ? ” he didn’t have much formal schooling... and apparently this country called ‘russia’ existed... but that was one he hadn’t heard of ! -- not that that said too much ! “ there are a lot of, uh... missing flights. ” -- a lot of lost people. “ i can try to help you out, but if it’s missing for the same reason mine is, i don’t think it’ll work... ” how does one go about asking ‘so did you just wake up here one day too? or are you from somewhere that’s real and i just haven’t heard of it before, eg russia, new jersey, etc?’ ?

it’d been second nature for years now -- nothing short of a reflex. in that split second that steven saw it hurtling towards him, his bubble formed to protect him from the very real threat of... a ball. okay, so not actually a real threat -- phew. doing away with the bubble ( and thanking his lucky stars that the people around the city seemed quite cool with magic... possibly because there was more than enough of it to go around ! ), he chuckled and picked up the ball. “ it’s alright ! ” he prefaced, holding the ball out. “ things happen ! ”

“ yeah ? where are you from ? ” you know, between the events that had just transpired ( which amy had barely been around for, but still felt she should acknowledge ) and the mere fact that he and so many others he’d met were simply... forced into this odd little city, it was pretty refreshing to hear that someone he was lending a hand to had moved there. hadn’t wound up there or gotten trapped -- just moved ! sure, there were people who had false memories, but... he had a really good plan and said really good plan was to temporarily ignore that fact, get some bliss. “ hey, it’s pretty impressive you’ve got any friends at all. ” -- cue the record scratch. “ wait -- sorry, sorry -- i didn’t mean to imply -- i mean, it can just be hard making friends in a new city, so it’s really cool that you’ve already made some. ”

he was in the city again. it was as normal as it could be again. and it was almost like nothing had ever happened. everything was fine again ! no otherworldly threats... no disasters striking every other hour or so... it was all... fine. and such thoughts that begged so many questions he did not have the energy to mull over, such thoughts that had him tucking his hands in his very distinguished pink jacket as he looked to the ground ( and, if in a y/a coming-of-age movie, would’ve been kicking a can along ) -- yes, such thoughts could be blamed... for when he and another collided, however lightly. “ oh, i’m -- sorry, sorry, ” he said, almost in perfect unison with the other... which, upon realization, brought a slight smile. “ it’s not a problem ! ”

when steven had arrived somewhere a little over six months ago, he’d scrounged up a single mattress and found himself... just really grateful that nothing in lion’s mane had disappeared ! ( geez, he would’ve been spending a lot of money he hadn’t had anymore on food and clothes ) -- so seeing this woman, with her boxes upon boxes upon boxes... yes, he may’ve had some diamond level strength, but if he considered getting his mattress up a feat... “ here, i can... ” he trailed off, picking up three of the boxes. after a slight pant of victory, he asked, “ so where are these going ? ”

pearl, admittedly, was not all that sensitive to the cold. she could feel it, of course, and was the type to appreciate a nice jacket or sweater for sure, but it didn’t affect her to the same level as humans. for all of the weather conditions that had happened since showing up on the island so far this had felt the most manageable for her, though it was very frustrating not knowing how to fix the situation. “steven!” her eyes widened, spotting him, and she quickly rushed over, crouching slightly so she could rub her hands over his arms in an attempt to warm him up. there was a chance he was fine. steven was more than just human himself, but it didn’t stop her from worrying. as much as she was trying to be better about being an overbearing mother type for steven, asking her to lighten up on an island experiencing extreme dangerous natural disasters that seemed to chance once an hour was not going to happen. “here here, take my jacket.” she said, shrugging off the light blue cover on her shoulders and handing it over. it wasn’t heavy enough to be much help but it would be something. “are you alright? when did you get here? i should try to start a fire.” she was clearly jumpy now, looking around for something to light even though it would probably be impossible in these conditions. 

the island would probably be quite lovely if it weren’t for the constant natural disasters ! he may’ve been half-gem, thus giving him an advantage over some of the humans around, but his half-organic side remained sensitive to the cold. perhaps he could heal his very own frostbite, but not being absolutely, genuinely, completely freezing ? that was something entirely different. and, unfortunately, his distinguished pink jacket wasn’t helping very much. and... geez, was he glad when he not only realized pearl was on the island with him ( well... not glad that she was stuck there, but if they both had to be either on an island with new disasters every hour or the city with new monsters -- at least they could be together, right ? ), he was glad when she rushed over and started some very needed friction on his arms. “ thanks... pearl... ” he managed to say through chattering teeth as she adorned him with her jacket. huddling into himself, he rummaged through his mind for a second, having to ignore the cold to nail down when exactly he’d landed on the island. “ i think... it was during... an earthquake ? ”

“ah, this is annoying.” it was just his luck that what he had dared call a weapon would break on him, although he tried to salvage it for a few more seconds. whatever the hell this spider thing was had thick skin and eventually, rang resorts to keeping his distance, kicking it away any time that it tried to get close while he tried to look for an alternative. he didn’t see another weapon, but he saw another person. “lend me a hand, would you?”

i am tripping i am tripping i am tripping i am tripping. could bojack swear he was about to die ? yes. the question was whether it would be the creatures or a very non-fatal, he’s just overdramatic, panic heart attack first. so first he’s human, then he’s in dc, then there are goddamn monsters ? and people with weapons actively asking him, a sworn pacifist ( what a joke ! ), for help ? “ uh -- yeah, so do i - ” he began, ready to out himself as a total coward because it’d be way easier than fighting... whatever those were ( he didn’t even weigh 1,200lbs anymore ! )... alas, he was rudely interrupted by another one coming face-to-face with him. swinging his fists aimlessly, he called out, “ we are so gonna die. ” should he just go ahead and relent ? “ what am i supposed to do here ? ” should he just go ahead and let that creature run him over or whatever it did ? after all, his flailing was only doing so much.

he’s HUMAN now. he’s also missing some fairly imperative memories, but that’s all i can think of AT THIS MOMENT.

I DO NOT CONDONE BOJACK’S ACTIONS. i’ve always simply thought he would be really interesting to play with the generational themes and his constant running in circles (reference intended if you have watched). outside of that, entp, 7w8!

also i am!! very tired right now so i can edit this and give a better rundown later but basically: bojack was born to beatrice sugarman and butterscotch horseman. they were both neglectful at best and abusive at worst (but like... he’s under the Hilariously Abusive Childhood trope on tvtropes for a reason... like they’re quite outlandish most of the time). he moved to los angeles and eventually became the star of the tv show horsin’ around (80s-90s family sitcom formula, played the main character “the horse”). that was cancelled and he became a has-been. throw in some drug abuse and alcoholism with a healthy side of mental illness and this comedic horse got dark.
