Beau’s reaction to Yasha’s letter has been on my mind a lot lately, and I think I can finally explain why it is a supremely and universally relatable moment, and not just some weird thing Marisha decided to do.
So you’re at a real low point. You’re impossibly depressed, and you’re really not sure you’re going to make it. But somehow, with a grim determination, you pull through. You do it not because things are suddenly all sunshine and rainbows, but because something inside of you decided you just needed to get through it. To see the new season of your favorite show. To watch your brother graduate. To help your friend move next month. To meet your soon to be born niece. To have at least one more Halloween. Whatever the reason, you decided it was time to, albeit temporarily, put aside this existential crisis to be solved at a later date. Nothing is fundamentally better than it was at your low point. But you’ve still got shit to do, so you bury what you can, and begin your steady march back into the land of the living.
And then you receive a phone call, or a voice mail, or a text message, or maybe someone bumps into you at work or school, or maybe even shows up at your house. The thing is, you really love this person. To you, they are one of the few little beacons of light in what is a rather dark and dreary moment of your life. More often than not you probably feel inadequate to the warmth of this person. You question how you could repay them for the dearth in your contribution to their life, compared to theirs to yours. They are supremely important to you, far more than you could ever consider yourself being to them.
And they say something that to them must feel so innocuous. So simple. They say they miss you. That they love your laugh. They ask if you remember something you did together that is still one of your fondest memories. They pay you some totally unexpected compliment. They ask you for your help with something that they clarify that you are just wonderful at. They force you by accident to consider how much of a presence you have in their conception of their life.
And a regular person would bask in this warmth. Or not even acknowledge it due to the banal regularity with which they have experienced this feeling from others. But for you, something cracks. The sweetness, the warmth, the tenderness, all feels to your skin like fire. And suddenly you want to hide, to cry in secret, to deny to yourself the reality of being known and loved while feeling so unworthy of such strength of feeling.
It’s a lot like getting so used to the cold of a winter day, that when you finally make it back to the warmth of indoors, your teeth begin to chatter so much you feel like they’ll crack.
Beau went into reading that expecting to just be continuing the playful, subtle courtship between her and Yasha. She was expecting a cheesy little poem. Think of her getting her wine and cocoa, settling into a comfortable bath, ready to accept a little harmless and sweet gift from Yasha. But instead what she got was a laser accurate counterargument to every single one of her major insecurities, and the knowledge that she makes the object of a battle between a Storm God and a twisted Demon, the person who lost both her romantic and platonic great loves, feel safe and strong.
She’s finally pieced herself back together after the hag, finally found a task with which to focus her mind and give her a drive to move forward, and maybe sometime in the future, she considers the possibility that she may be loved like she never thought possible. But she never in a million years expected that future to be so present, to already be right there for her to take for herself at a moment’s notice. How absolutely terrifying. Because suddenly, this seems like it’s actually real to Yasha, and Beau has to acknowledge that it’s just as real to her, too.
Consider the lonely life Beau has lived, her struggles with what to her mind is the temporary nature of the Mighty Nein, and her recent decision to commit herself to seeing it to its conclusion. And out of nowhere, an Angel decides to give her the rather novel idea that maybe her loneliness may never return, that maybe someone else has found strength in her the way she has in her friends, and that maybe they weren’t exactly keen on ever letting go of that new found source of strength.
I’m practically looking for a tub to drown in just thinking about it.
TAYLOR SWIFT Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions
Every writing advice thing ever: Don’t get bogged down in details on your first draft. Just write! ☺️
Me: How I begin this scene hinges on whether cheese sandwiches were served with mayo in the 50’s.
have not seen anything more relatable today >.<
let me link the world’s most useful twitter thread.
some excerpts:
there’s nothing to stop you from using the <get there> method for research details. in fact, i know many many writers who use it for just that.
it’s sort of funny that the current cultural idea of the flapper dates not from the 1920s, but the 1950s when costume designers took the radical, gender-fluid, sexual, sexually liberated ideas and fashions of the 20s and made them sexy. as in sexual objectifying.
because 1950s and fuck female agency.
If you would like, I would love to hear more about this. What, exactly, happened, and what was the true 1920s aesthetic, untainted by 50s views?
hokay. so it’s the 1950s and it’s the heyday of the studio system and writers and movie makers (and audiences) want rom coms and frolicking films and lighthearted fun, but there’s just one problem.
WWII
but that was the 1940s! you say
you’re right.
but in order to set a film in the 1950s, writers and film makers have to establish what the male lead character did during the war or risk it coming across like he didn’t, well, serve. can’t have a shirker or a coward and rejected for medical reasons really doesn’t fly in the 1950s. and there’s only so many times you can write about soldiers and sailors and airmen and the occasional spy before it starts to become stale. and it doesn’t terribly fit with the fluffy writing because, well, war and death and tens of millions of people dead. contemporary films more fall in the line of what we now call film noir. men and women who have been damaged by war, but that’s another topic.
sooooo, you do period pieces. no one wants to do the 1930s because that’s the great depression. so 1920s. frolicking and gay and fabulous!
(Great War, what Great War?)
but the thing is, the 1920s, especially in Paris and Berlin, were a massively transgressive, reversal, and experimental time period in art, fashion, society, and all over. but only a little bit in america because honestly we were barely touched by wwi so it’s not like we’re partying to forget an entire generation of young men killed off and entire towns wiped off the face of the earth using weapons the likes of which had never been seen before. the us as a whole mostly heard about sarin gas, not see it poison entire landscapes and men and animals dropped to the ground and die in truly horrific ways.
the europe that emerged from wwi was massively shell shocked, angry, and living in a surreal dream of everything being upwards and backwards and live now because tomorrow you may die and it’s all nonsense anyway. it’s a world in which surrealism and dadaism and german expressionism make sense because fuck it all.
you get repudiation of the old, experimentation, deliberate reversals, transgressive behavior, and if there’s an envelope to push, you tear it open. France calls the 1920s “Années folles”, the crazy years.
the things we’re doing now, with fluidity and experimentation and exploration of gender and sexuality and presentation? the 1920s did that already. it’s drag and androgyny and blatant homosexuality. it’s extramarital affairs and sex before or without marriage, it’s rejection of marriage as an idea and an institution, it’s playing with gender and gender roles and working women and unrestrained art and
it’s everything the 1950s hated. or more accurately: absolutely terrified of.
the flappers of the 1920s went to college and cut their hair to repudiate a century of a woman’s hair being her crowning glory. they wore obvious makeup and makeup in ways that are not terribly appealing now and weren’t terribly appealing then, but they signaled you were part of the tribe.
they were women who wanted independence and personal fulfillment.
“She was conscious that the things she did were the things she had always wanted to do.“
so the 1950s didn’t want that. they wanted films with dancing and chorus lines and pretty girls to be looked at. they wanted spaghetti straps and fringed dresses that moved pretty when the chorus girls danced.
1920s fringe doesn’t. 1920s fringe is made of silk, incredibly dense, incredibly heavy, sewn on individually by hand, and rather delicate. the all-over fringe dress didn’t exist until the 1950s invention of nylon and continuous loops that could be sewn on in costume workshops by the mile on machines.
(this is before “vintage” exists. to the 1950s, the 1920s (or earlier) wasn’t vintage, it was old-fashioned. démodé. out of style. last last last last last season.)
1950s 1920s-set movies have clothes that are the 1950s take on it. the dresses have a dropped waist, but they’re form-fitting, figure-revealing. the actresses are pretty clearly wearing bras and 50s girdles under them a lot of the time. they’re not
the woman on the far left is basically wearing a man’s suit with a skirt. la garçonne. some women went full-out and wore pants. you could be arrested for that. they were. still wore pants. and pyjama ensembles in silk and loud prints.
or class photo of ‘25
or even
not that 1920s dresses could be sexy or sexual; they often were. i’ve seen 20s dresses that were basically sideless and held together with straps. but it’s sort of like how the mini skirt went from being a thing of sexual liberation to an item of sexual objectification.
it’s ownership and it’s agency and it’s hard to put a name or finger on it, but you just know. sex goddess versus sex icon.
Wisconsin White Deer Surprised by his own Antlers Shedding
aw hell no
Deer, although graceful and lovely, are fucking morons.
Who among us isn’t surprised when a part of our head flies off
As a southerner raised by rednecks, I can confirm that deer are adorable morons.
I’ve seen deer:
1.) Run from their own baby after it sneezed
2.) Run from a turkey that was chasing another turkey
3.) Run into the only tree in the middle of a field
4.) Run from ITSELF after IT sneezed
5.) Run circles around my house because a Mockingbird was imitating the wheezing sound deer use to verbally communicate a sense of unease
As a side note, as a Texan I can confirm that mockingbirds are total trolls who will also mimic thr sounds of babies crying and phones ringing so deer are definitely not the only ones getting freaked out by them

the scene in jennifer’s body where she smears foundation all over her face in a desperate attempt to feel any semblance of normal after her body being violated and taken over by a demon and literally losing her humanity and the only way she can even think to fix it is to cover herself in makeup because that’s how the world wants to see girls and that’s what she’s been taught to do her whole life >>>>>>>>> fight club, american psycho, all marvel, anything by question tarantula ari astor or david fincher, any movie created by a man ever
can we weaponize comfort already?
a lot of places have a culture that valorizes never sleeping and not eating right and not taking breaks and stuff like that.
fuck that. I want like
look at how comfortable and well rested I am. I am well-nourished, I take bubble baths, and I have a good work-life balance.
self-care has made me strong. has running yourself into the ground made you strong?
I will destroy you. and then I will have a pleasant lunch.
can we weaponize that?
This is the most metal self-care post I’ve seen in a while.
The world told me to hate myself; I realized the greatest act of rebellion was to love myself
Oooooh that last line though.
So, short recap of this hell of a week
- starting with the US elections being the most dramatic ones ever
- Trump declares himself winner literal days before we get an official result
- The whole world's waiting for friggin Nevada to count their votes
- Trump wants to stop counting the votes, but at the same time not. He's confused, wants to involve the supreme court. Unclear why.
- with everyone's eyes still glued to Nevada, the CW airs a new episode of Supernatural, casually kicking the entirety of tumblr back into the year 2013
- Destiel becomes canon after 11 seasons / 12 years
- Castiel "dies" and somehow the internet turns it into a mainstream meme
- For about 12 hours everyone is convinced that Canon Destiel caused russian dictator Vladimir Putin to step down
- While all of us are busy freaking out about Destiel, Georgia turns blue, and we all find out via Destiel memes
- We're still waiting for Nevada
- Pennsylvania turns blue as well, and we find out via Destiel memes AGAIN
- Destiel-Antis are getting mad and Destiel-Fans are having an absolute blast after a single-word tweet. "COPE"
- Superwholock is crawling out of its grave and people bring back tumblr code and dashcon
- rumours about Sherlock season 5 to make the Superwholock chaos perfect
- Putin is NOT stepping down but that doesn't stop the memes
- Destiel is trending on Twitter ON TOP OF THE ELECTION, and it's trending in combination with Putin.
- still waiting for Nevada
- Trump declares himself winner again and gets mad at twitter for marking his tweets as incorrect
- Trump still tries to stop the ballot counting with wild accusations of cheating. Also, he really really hates the mail-in ballots.
- we still freak out over Destiel and find out that Dan and Phil dating is confirmed. Suddenly we're all 13 again.
- Trumps son tweets about starting a war
- while the whole world is STILL waiting for Nevada, Trump goes golfing, but not without declaring himself winner once more. Winner "BY A LOT".
- nothing from Nevada
- Trumps team send emails to people asking them for more money
- Biden wins Pennsylvania, now having enought electoral votes to win the presidency, fireworks all around the globe
- about 0.2 seconds after Pennsylvania has made Biden president, Nevada finishes counting.
- Joe Biden becomes the 46th President of the United States and a big bunch of people find out via destiel memes
- Trump lost the election. BY A LOT.
- "JOE IS BIDEN"
- we declare Biden the Destiel president
- Trump does not accept the election results. What a surprise.
- Trump is still golfing but his giant team of lawyers have dug up a bunch of people who claim to have witnessed cheating in the ballot counting
- Trumps lawyer team holds a press conference about their plans to fight against the cheating, leaving everyone confused about 1) their non-existent proof and 2) the very weird venue this conference was held at
- "stop the steal"
- we learn that Trump's press conference was held in the parking lot of Four Seasons Landscaping, not the luxury hotel Four Seasons.
- we also learn that Four Seasons Landscaping is located in-between a crematorium and a sex-toy shop
- Biden makes a speech and Trump finally stops golfing. Trump's fans are very mad at the democracy for being a democracy. They also hate socialism without even knowing what it means.
how was this week even real
So at one of my jobs I work with this really nice woman named Liz who has an equally nice boyfriend. Thing is, I don’t know the boyfriends name because Liz only addresses him as boytoy. The term boytoy is used so frequently to describe him that not only does she have no problem using that term but neither do any of her coworkers including myself. One day Liz told me that he would be stopping by and when some dude with a beard came through the door I looked at him and said, “Mr.toy I presume.” And he just looks at me and goes; “The very one.”
Fucking eh. Relationship goals.
As an update, they’ve moved into a house together and are still super cute
Gundam Guy is truly a man of patience and diligence. From his attention to detail building his models to the loving attention and detail for his wife.
He forgot to switch to his blackfishing account lmaooo
it’s really important to me that people (especially young people) know how much of this goes on -- like, I have seen chat rooms full of people like this brainstorming together on how to propagate this kind of deceit. Often each will run a whole bunch of accounts as different identities. Many of them are stupid like this guy, who would be terrible at this even if he remembered to switch to his other account before posting that garbage. But SOME of them are actually really really slick.
And they will do things like start you with premises you can easily agree with, such as “I respect anyone who respects me” and “you should be able to be proud of who you are” and slowly, half step by half step, lead you places like “people who don’t respect me deserve violence” and “there’s nothing wrong with white pride”.
Or they’ll start infighting among groups... they might have an account pretending to be black and keep re-posting a couple of pictures of mexican business owners making sure their businesses don’t get damaged during BLM protests... trying to make it look like mexican americans are “on the other side” to drive a wedge and overshadow the reality that uncountable mexican american protesters stood in solidarity with the BLM movement.
They might get real sneaky and have an account pretending to be bi, and then use that account to advocate for the inclusion of pedophiles in the LGBTQ community, using false equivalencies specifically to create a backlash against bi people or make people associate bi folk with pedophilia. Some 37 year old cishet dude might pretend to be a 23 year old lesbian and start blogging untrue fear mongering about how ace people use up resources meant to protect lesbian and gay people... because if they can get real gay and lesbian people arguing about it, that fractures a group that should be strong together, and alienates people who should be adding their strength to that group.
These are all the kind of thing that happen every day here on social media. ALWAYS do your best to talk to real life members of a community in person to round out your world view, and lean toward inclusion, compassion, and support when faced with someone online presenting a point of view that is trying to convince you of negative things about specific kinds of people -- especially people you would naturally identify or ally with.
Be suspicious of accounts that seem to be saying your enemy is the person next to you. Even if that account is who they say they are, who is the account next to them, whispering propaganda and rhetoric into their DMs?
Anyway, stay safe out here kids
People pretend to be marginalized all the fucking time because they know that they won’t be taken as seriously when they have opinions on things they haven’t experienced personally. That’s what happened with hivling, but that’s hardly the only example (Google “A Gay Girl In Damascus” if you want to go down a rabbit hole). It’s very easy to do the same exact thing but to use that clout to turn groups against each other.
capitalism is fucking scary because it will commodify literally anything. it commodifies the rebellion culture that is supposed to strike against the system but capitalism turns it into “punk rock”. it commodifies spirituality to make you buy self help books that teaches you to stay away from capitalism. it commodifies minimalism and makes you buy things to maintain your minimalist aesthetic. it commodifies global warming, one of the deadliest consequences of capitalism itself and guilt trips you into buying “green products”. it commodifies itself and creates the idea that vanity is fashionable. it will eat everything up.
