NEW MUSIC: Hominidœ - "Abundance" and "Moira"
Raleigh, NC based beatmaker/producer and Smoke Signals Collective member Hominidœ released two new tracks recently titled "Abundance" and "Moira". Both tracks feature 808 drums and a strong hip-hop influence blended together wonderfully with an atmospheric haze. The production quality is amazing and Hominidœ's mixing and mastering only gets better with each song he puts out. I'm extremely excited to see what he puts out going forward.
NEW MUSIC: Optimus Rhymes - Third-Eye Boogers
NC-based rapper Optimus Rhymes dropped his new album titled Third-Eye Boogers last week. It's a merger of both traditional hip-hop and left-field concepts that works really well. The usual tropes of modern hip-hop are featured including drugs and sexual references, but it's Optimus Rhymes' willingness to not be afraid to say what he wants that makes his music stand out. Where some rappers would shy away from naming tracks after Dragonball Z references and video game consoles, Optimus doesn't back away. The tracks are fairly short and feature a wide variety of producers ranging from REALMS, PGMW, CompanyHen, King Tut, Dutchmassive, and Optimus himself. There is also a track that includes instrumentation from "Window Seat" by Bassnectar. Third-Eye Boogers can be both heard and purchased for the low price of $2.99 (or more) by clicking on the artwork above.
NEW BTB Design : Cleaning Crew
ALBUM PSUEDO-REVIEW : Baths - Obsidian
Will Wiesenfeld, better known as Baths, is back with his second full length album, entitled Obisidan. His sophomore effort shares the fact that both it and his previous release (Cerulean) are named after colors and have the same amount of letters; they are also both released through the label Anticon. Baths' second album is darker in tone than Cerulean, which is definitely fitting given the album title. Will brings some great production this time around with an album that has both it's strengths and weaknesses.
PROS
The production quality on the album is great. The sound design is absolutely left-field at times using sounds such as abrasive glitches, dogs growling and grumbling, and piano that shatters the groove of the beat only for the song to drop back into it ("No Past Lives").
Well structured songs for the most part with a few exceptions ("Miasma Sky" and "Incompatible")
A more organic feel than Cerulean with instrumentation including things such as piano, strings, what sounds like a cello, and found sounds.
CONS
Will's vocals can be a bit shrill at times. This can be less accompanying to the music than it was on Cerulean and the album suffers a bit from it.
The lyricism can be spotty, with some really terrible lines at times.
BTB Favorite Songs : Worsening, Ironworks, No Past Lives, Earth Death.
BTB Least Favorite Songs: Miasma Sky, Incompatible, Inter

NEW MUSIC: Earl Sweatshirt - "Guild (feat. Mac Miller)"
Earl recently released the track he had been working on with Mac Miller. The song is titled "Guild" and is set to be featured on his upcoming sophomore album Doris. "Guild" is a slow-churning, ominous sounding song in which both Earl and Mac's verses have been slowed down and lowered in pitch. It's not as impressive lyrically as "Chum" or even "WHOA" for that matter, but I'm still anxious to hear Doris as a whole.
NEW BTB Design: Lost...
ALBUM PSUEDO-REVIEW: Ghost (Ghost B.C. in the US) - Infestissumam
Here's Beyond The Bits' first ever psuedo-review. A short, sweet, and to the point summary of our opinions of albums.
PROS
Some nice riffs, albeit they are found amongst a number of poor ones.
Higher production value than their last album, Opus Eponymous.
Great album art.
CONS
Repetitive and sometimes laughable lyricism (With great thematics in regard to the band's image comes great responsibility.)
Weak instrumentation and guitar solos at parts.
Lack of substance despite higher budget.
NEW MUSIC: Black Hippy - "U.O.E.N.O. Remix"
Black Hippy just recently released their own remix of the popular Rocko song "U.O.E.N.O. (feat. Rick Ross & Future)" [Now with 100% less rape references]. It's arguably the best remix thus far in my opinion. It's definitely the best Black Hippy remix since the "Black Lip Bastard Remix" from Ab-Soul's 2012 release, Control System. After this remix the question on everyones' mind should be, "When is Black Hippy going to release a full-length album?"
Are Molly References Becoming a Tired Trend in Modern Hip-Hop?
Are references to "Molly" becoming overused in the context of modern hip-hop? Kendrick Lamar seems to think so and I think it'd be safe to say most people would probably agree. Molly is a slang term used to refer to a more pure type of ecstasy (chemically known as MDMA or 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine), which is usually in a powder of crystalline form. A countless number of popular rappers, most notably Wiz Khalifa and Danny Brown have used the term excessively. Kendrick Lamar took to action by displaying the words "Death to Molly" at the end of his music video for "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe". He later talked to Sway Calloway of MTV in the interview seen above where he clarified his opinion on the topic. He states that in order for hip-hop to remain original and less corny, the term shouldn't be used so much. What do you guys think?
NEW MUSIC: The Weeknd - "Kiss Land"
The Weeknd recently released a new track titled "Kiss Land". The song sounds similar to material from Tesfaye's first release House of Balloons rather than his latest effort Echoes of Silence. "Kiss Land" is a single from his forthcoming LP, and first LP at that, given that Trilogy is a compilation. It's an almost eight minute effort that starts with the familiar hazy production and sex driven lyrics of previous Weeknd songs. Near the halfway point the song switches in tone from a more relaxed vibe to a more uptempo drum heavy section (think "House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls".)

NEW-ISH MUSIC: Atu - Pictures on Silence
This isn't exactly a "new album" seeing as it came out on March 22nd, but it's still relatively new and worth posting in my opinion. I stumbled upon to Atu (stylized as αtu) thanks to an article Pigeons & Planes posted. The article recommended that fans of Lapalux give Atu a listen. I did, and was absolutely blown away by his recent release Pictures on Silence. It's definitely reminiscent of Lapalux's style featuring soulful vocal chops layered over thick and textured beats. The music found on Atu's SoundCloud and Bandcamp pages is wonderful and he is now a producer I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more from.
MUSIC VIDEO: Tycho - "Ascension"
Scott Hansen, better known by his production name Tycho, has released a music video for his song "Ascension". The visual style of the video blends Tycho's distinct design style seen in his ISO50 work with a number of overlaid effects. Some of the shots are taken from Tycho's live show visuals and a portion of the video makes use of symmetrical imagery. All of this adds up to one gorgeous music video that may end up on Beyond The Bits' Best of 2013 list near the end of the year.
MUSIC VIDEO: Bibio - "À tout à l'heure"
Bibio, who recently released his album Silver Wilkinson through Warp Records, has put out a wonderful music video for one of the tracks titled "À tout à l'heure." The video has a retro psychedelic rock vibe that accompanies Bibio's experimental folk-inspired electronic music quite nicely. Visuals that look like they're straight out of the 60's/70's make this a memorable music video in a culture predominately focused on crisp, clean visuals.
