i never understand people who hate season one buck or think he's not 'really' buck. to me, at least, he's one of the most continuous characters in the show. he's got a lot of growing up to do in s1, absolutely. he's basically feral at the beginning of the season. he's never belonged anywhere, he's never stayed anywhere long enough to put down roots that mattered. he didn't understand how much the job meant to him until he screwed up and lost it. he's never had a serious partner, never learned to be in a relationship that mattered to him. he hasn't yet learned how to step in with the people he loves and be someone reliable for them to lean on. and he does learn that! not just with abby, but with the rest of the 118 - bobby, especially.

but like, in the essentials, he's still buck. he's cocky, impulsive, reckless, charming. he's never met a problem he won't throw himself all in on trying to fix. he's superstitious. he's got foot in mouth disease. he's by turns strikingly observant and staggeringly clueless. he never expects anyone or anything to keep him. he's not the buck we know in s9, but there's a clear continuous line from the half-feral kid he was in s1 to the man he is now.

you know whose characterization IS almost completely unrecognizable in season one compared to the subsequent seasons? chimney.
