So I was thinking about Maeglin, as you do, and there was something I was curious about. So I took out my handy dandy Silmarillion to look it up.
This is what's Turgon said to Eöl:
"[Here] I am King; and whether you will it or will it not, my doom is law. This choice only is given to you: to abide here, or to die here; and so also for your son."
And I have things to say about this.
Is this not considered kinslaying, oh noble and just Turgon, he who is better than his cousins the Fëanårions because he didn't draw blood at Alqualondë? Or do the Thindar/Avari (we're never really told WHAT Eöl is) not count as kin?
Was this a new rule established only after Areðel disappeared, or had it always been a thing and Areðel was just special as his sister?
"And so also for your son"?!?!?! Turgon, you realize that's your nephew, right? Maybe you don't care about Eöl, but Maeglin is your blood family. And Areðel, THAT'S YOUR SON! You'd let your brother threaten to kill your son? It wasn't like Eöl interrupted her before she could smack Turgon or something. It says:
But [Eöl] stood long without word or movement while a still silence fell upon the hall.
It sounds like there was plenty of time for her to say something like "Turgon, if you threaten my son again, I'll make sure you never have any of your own". Was she just too cowardly to say something against Turgon, or did she seriously not care about Maeglin?
Can you imagine being left alone in a city of people you don't know, your parents are dead, you can't speak one of the main languages, you don't understand the culture very well if at all, you aren't used to the sun, you have a crush on your cousin that you can't help having and no one will help you talk it through, and the guy in charge also threatened to kill you the first time you met? Oh, and he's also your uncle.
Someone call CPS for this 80 year old. Geez, even Tyelco would probably make for a better parent.
What happened to the cool Turgon who fought through a horde of orcs to retrieve his father's body, and then he made his father's heart the main sigil of his heraldry? This guy is just a loser, hypocrite, and coward.
