I recently joined a server where they told me my definition of semiverbal(like yours and other folks on Tumblr) is wrong, the clinical definition is speaking 20 words or less, and that I can't join because I'm spreading misinformation. First time I'm hearing about this, do you know what that's about?

Hello! I think I know exactly what server you’re talking about and that server is very icky and has spread a ton of misinformation.

Semiverbal DOES NOT mean 20 words or less. It CAN mean 20 words or less however that isn’t what the community has said is the one definition of semiverbal and stuck too.

The community has basically agreed that semiverbal means anyone who struggles greatly with speech in some way. (Simple explanation).

I’m sorry you had a bad experience with that server, if it’s the server I’m thinking about then you dodged a huge bullet by not going anyways.

semiverbal is community term, not clinical term. there little to even no research that use “semiverbal,” because again, not clinical term. most professionals haven’t even heard of it because again! not clinical term. so there is no clinical definition, that simply false.

(nonverbal however started as clinical term, which may be where confusion come from, because semiverbal probably came from nonverbal)

they may be thinking abt “minimally verbal,” which start as clinical term. because that typically mean “less than 20/30/even 50 words” (clinical people don’t agree on number)

there also (clinical!) proposal for “limited verbal” which more than 50 words but still significant(!!) below expected but that one see less

people actually learn about stuff before so boldly speak & see self as activist for poor poor people with communication difficulties challenge (not at OP or anon, at person who so confident tell anon)

I would like to see one scholar within my lifetime consider the posthumous diagnosis for ANY reason other than "little boy played music well." friendly reminder that you don't need any diagnosis or disorder to adapt your routine to accommodate you! sit down in the shower. brush your teeth and wash your face in the shower. bring a chair to the kitchen while you cook. use unscented products. your routine should be built for you.

Can i add? You also don't need any diagnosis or disorder to use things that will improve your life. Use a cane, install a shower chair, use a kid app for brushing your teeth if it helps to maintain your attention. You don't need permission to make your own life better.

as an autistic person, the way i experience emotions can be fucky. i started T this week and even though i'd been looking forward to it for eight months now, there's no joy or excitement when i apply it - my emotions very often have a flat effect (until they Don't but that's a whole other post). BUT even though i feel no excitement when I apply T, i can still tell i'm happy about it because of pragmatic things like how quickly it integrated into my morning routine, the way i instantly told all my loved ones, and the way i look forward to going to bed at night knowing that i can wake up and apply my T the next morning.

if you experience emotions differently from most people, i see you and i love you.

Shout out to every blind/low vision person with speech disabilities that can't use high tech augmentative alternative communication (AAC) because of their vision. I see you and I am you. You have a place in speech disability communities. Please remember us when discussing speech disability and non/semiverbality.

Actually I am going to say more about being both blind and semi/nonverbal + neurodevelopmental communication disability because I have big feelings about it. I am a low masking semiverbal autistic with speech loss episodes and I'm also legally blind. I do have residual vision, but when I look down at an AAC board, I see a confusing mess of shapes and colours and can't read them or tell what the symbols are.

But that doesn't mean I simply opt to speak where high tech AAC should be used. It means I just don't speak then. A lot of low masking autistics who are speaking disabled are also higher support needs and multiply disabled and can't reliably type/handwrite to communicate for that reason either, I fall into that group.

So I cope with what speech I can do, large/high contrast communication cards, pointing and gesturing and grunting and mumbling, LOTS of scripting and echolalia, having carers translate what I'm saying to people. And I only get by because I'm still only semiverbal. So many blind semi/nonverbal people are in a similar situation where even with the most most high tech AAC, shifting through a sea of words with a screen reader means it takes too much time effort energy to have any spontaneous conversation with AAC.

For that reason we are shut off from a lot of the rest of the developmentally disabled community and the world. We face inaccessibility and exclusion in many other areas too, Doctors will refuse to diagnose us if we don't have enough vision to complete all the vision based development assessments and deny us resources, diagnose with behavioral disorder instead, etc. So please please remember blind developmentally disabled people, and how much more dramatically we can be isolated if we're semi/nonspeaking and low masking.

every day I hate the term "neurodivergent" more and more. just say "autism and/or ADHD" because that's what you mean 99.9% of the time. like what's the fucking point of saying "neurodivergent" if it's just an euphemism for autism. just say autism. "neurodivergency culture is ...!" and it never includes people with epilepsy or schizophrenia or down syndrome or rett syndrome or cerebral palsy or TBI or what have you. it includes low needs autistic people and people with ADHD. it's like all the ND posters on this site don't even know what ND means ( or they know and just don't care )

i think it’s funny how autism education accounts will talk about “autism comorbidities” and mention every mental illness under the sun, no matter how tenuous the link, but not intellectual disability, which roughly a third of autistics have. also by funny i mean ableist.

As someone who is somewhat of a “veteran” of the online ND community, I’m disappointed in the lack of positivity and love for lesser known diverse cognitive conditions, and the opposing abundance of posts about “cures” or outdated criteria or treatments for those conditions. Personal Examples of Autistic Routine:

Please note that these are some of my routines to help others see what they can look like.

I do not start work until 8:30am. I aim to arrive 20-30 minutes early for some reason. If I am "on time" (not early) I get very upset, my heart rate kicks up and I'm in distress for the morning.

Eating the same meals every day. Samefoods are often due to sensitivities, but my requirements for how it's prepared, what time I eat etc is very important. I will not eat if I cannot make the meals as I need.

I drive the same way to work everyday. My car has a GPS screen with Google Maps that I rarely use because even if there's traffic, a road accident, construction etc, taking a different route is so upsetting that I get the shakes. I'll leave home early, get stuck in traffic and wait rather than take another route.

Work had become a routine to the point where vacation time is distressing to me. I struggle to relax, even though I have so earned anytime off. I cry, have meltdowns and can't process not being at work.

I wake up, make my coffee, cook breakfast and sit to look at my phone while I eat the same way every morning. If this routine is messed up, I get very distressed and can feel overwhelmed for the rest of the day.

These are just a few examples of how Autistics can have routine. 😊❤️
