The energy-efficient desalination system produces fresh water without chemical additives and transforms leftover salts into useful materials
Desalination is the process of generating freshwater from brackish or saltwater, usually through the process of reverse osmosis. While this can be a very useful tool in water shortages, it also has some pretty huge drawbacks--reverse osmosis requires a lot of energy, requires chemical treatment of the water, and produces concentrated brine as a waste product which can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems.
Researchers have recently discovered a new way to perform desalination using solar energy, which doesn't require chemical inputs and collects waste salt instead of producing brine. Concentrating the waste salt in a solid form instead of brine means that it can later be processed to extract valuable minerals like lithium.
i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.
At the risk of sounding anti-intellectual, I think that college should be free and also not a requirement for employment outside of highly specialized career fields
At the risk of sounding like an effete intellectual, I do actually think you should be allowed to just take college courses indefinitely
technically you can, if you don't care about degrees.
Free Harvard courses. Free Courses from Stanford. Free Courses from MIT. Free courses from Yale. Free courses from Princeton.
Free courses on Coursera.
Free Courses on EDx Free Courses on Alison
For paid, there's The Great Courses+/Wonderium. 20$ a month for unlimited courses.
When searching, the phrases you're looking for are Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), or you can do a general search of say, "free online college courses." Oh, and so you don't get surprised like I did, have an avoid: Hillsdale College is a conservative Christian site and not a valid MOOC place. Sign up with them and you will get things like THIS IS WHY THE LEFT IS TURNING YOUR KIDS TRANS AND GAY in your inbox.
@yourunderwaterskies I wanted to say thank you so much for adding these links, seriously, they've been life-changingly helpful to me-
And I also wanted to mention that humanitarian organisations have free courses too, like the Red Cross on international humanitarian law.

hbo max blocks screenshots even when I use the snipping tool AND firefox AND ublock which is a fucking first. i will never understand streaming services blocking the ability to take screenshots thats literally free advertising for your show right there. HOW THE HELL IS SOMEBODY GONNA PIRATE YOUR SHOW THROUGH SCREENSHOTS. JACKASS
somewhere out there is a guy who meticulously takes screenshots of every individual frame of his favorite tv shows and then painstakingly etches each one onto a roll of film which he puts into his old timey projector and recreates the footage as a silent film with his own lavishly hand-lettered dialogue cards and original score that he plays on his upright piano and charges audiences one shiny penny a play. at last, big media has finally outsmarted ol' Zachary Zoetrope
PSA for everyone who doesn't know, explained simply
this is NOT because of blocking screenshots, it's because of HOW streaming sites use your computer's hardware to optimise performance, which means the thing rendering the video and the thing capturing your screen aren't the SAME thing. so they can't talk together.
you can fix this by going to your browser settings, searching for "hardware acceleration", and turning that off.
This also fixes screen sharing to other screens. It has been GODSEND
type this in the toolbar to find this setting in firefox: about:preferences#searchResults
ol' Zachary Zoetrope is back in business!
look i WISH more horror movies were just the directors thinly disguised fetish. instead we got all these horror movies that are just undisguised reflections of culturally hegemonic values and anxieties. like if we got some weird fetishes up in here it would probably add some variety thats all im saying.
I got frost bite on my fingers back in January during the giant blizzard that hit the northeast coast of the US. It wasn't like bad bad, and while I was out in the cold for an hour and a half without gloves, most of that time my hands were in my (raincoat) pockets, so they didn't get too cold. It was the last five or ten minutes in the cold, where I was carrying a cane and a roller bag suitcase (without gloves, in 14 degrees, then minus windchill) to catch the bus that my hands got super painful (I was crying from the pain). I got some light blistering at the base of my fingernails. My hands warmed back up on the bus and it was ok.
Later that night, like four hours later, I had to unbury my car. Fortunately I had my winter coat and gloves at that point (they were in my car), but my hands did get wet (it was wet snow), and I had to stop a fair amount to warm my hands back up because they got cold so easily.
So now, it's exactly five months later and I have itchy dry patches of skin on all my fingers that just never go away, no matter what i do. My hands are very sensitive to hot and cold and they get cold very easily. My dermatologist had recommended a steroid ointment that I use for eczema to relieve the itching but it doesn't work, and it just makes my skin thinner and more prone to splits.
I've done some reading and I know that I can expect the nerves to take months or years to properly heal. But it's the dry itchy skin that's making me nuts. I do have an appointment with my doctor this week to see if she knows of anything that can be done. But this morning it occurred to me to ask on here.
Do any of you know anything that might help relieve the dry skin and itching (or, I dunno, promote nerve healing)? Just gonna tag those of you I follow who seem to know everyone else or who might have this as an intense interest.

Make it very clear to your doc that the current medication isn't working and making the situation worse. There are many other things they can try. 2. Seconding the Aloe and Bag Balm in the comments, and another friend reccomends Cetaphil with the lime green lid:
3. At 5 months out and with confirmed nerve damage though, you're probably going to want to talk to a neurologist or a physical therapist about pain management. You can also ask your doctor about a recommendation for an accupuncturist or laser therapy if they think that might help with the nerve damage
I'll open this up to the floor because I have experience with burns but not frostbite. @systlin?
If nothing else, you have to give Gooseworx and the Amazing Digital Circus crew credit because they're all very online people and 100% had to know that making a show whose basic premise is "what if a bunch of people who are all fundamentally a bit exhausting to hang out with were forced to hang out with each other at gunpoint" was a fandom discourse bomb waiting to happen, and they did it anyway.
No spoilers!!!
I'm new to the indie animation community and I'm genuinely confused about the way Goose talks about her own show online. Is this normal? Just the disregard for the show in general, the exhaustion, the complete lack of energy and care for the show atp.
Like I definitely understand her side. This fandom became greedy and wanted too much and expected too much. But.... Is this a new concept? TADC obviously became much bigger than she expected. And that can be a good and a bad thing. But literally all I see is her just not giving a single fuck about this anymore. It's like if you don't care why would I?
The whole "ehhhh, who cares?" thing.... Like??? I feel that's not a normal response from a show creator but again I'm used to mainstream media on TV. Is this not weird???
"ehhh, who cares?" Ummm, probably the people who paid real life money and called their theatres to beg them to play e9 in their area. Like I've never been in a fandom where the creator will, to their fans face, say, "I really don't give a fuck. This show just got too big."
Like oh okay??? You have one episode left and this is your way of wrapping up the series? A nice little "Omg you guys have been here for years, don't care. Spent money? Don't care. I hate my own show. Enjoy the episode. Bye."
Indie creators that interact too closely with their fandom get burned out and straight up burned more often than not, it's just not sustainable to pay so much attention to all your critics and all your die hard fans wanting to influence your ongoing work and flipping out when their expectations aren't met.
Add to that how they've got to make themselves into business people and be their own marketing team to even break into the industry and that little passion project ends up just a wrong move away from turning into a personal hell
gay men brought back 70s mustaches, lesbians brought back 80s mullets, and now straight dudes are just walking around with both thinking they stumbled onto this styling choice by accident. say the line meryl (cerulean sweater monologue but specifically about how gay culture creates taste)
-- The Faggots & Their Friends Between Revolutions
a funny thing going on in the responses/notes is a handful of people extending it to straight progressive women too when they’re literally one of the groups the book itself counts under “their friends”. like that’s in the book.
