it really is fitting that buck’s childhood was spent unknowingly competing with his dead brother and now phillip is doomed to spend the rest of his days competing with buck’s dead father, knowing he’ll never come out on top.

I know we love kind, thoughtful, emotionally mature big brother Chris, but I’d honestly love more if we got jealous, angry, stressed out teenager Chris.

Let him be mad that his dad is so excited about the new baby.

Let him be jealous that Theo is getting so much of Eddie’s time and attention, even as he pushes for more space and independence now that he’s 16.

Let him feel the complicated emotions of seeing some other kid get the thing you didn’t have at their age, and no longer need at your age, but still kind of want anyway but also don’t.

Let Chris and Eddie both explore their feelings around Eddie’s absence from Chris’ life when he was little, and Chris now growing up and nearing adulthood and what that means for their relationship and how things are changing.

Let Chris be a teenager, feeling everything emotion as the huge life changing experience it is at that age.

Let Eddie see all that and feel confused and conflicted and struggle to balance his desire to give Chris everything he wants and needs with his wish to help Buck and be supportive with Theo so that they never have to feel the way he did, alone and isolated and like they’re failing.

Let Eddie feel guilty that maybe he is doing what his parents did, trying to get a do over with Theo to correct the mistakes me feels like he made with Chris.

There’s so much potential for some great angsty emotional storytelling. I hope we get to dive into it!

sometimes i have to pinch myself because there was an emergency where the victim said 'save the boy. she's the love of my life, he's the love of hers' in the same episode where buck was ready to die to make sure christopher made it home to eddie.

and then in s8, buck gave up his home to make sure eddie and christopher could be together.

and then in s9, buck was ready to give up his identity and remain in capativity in order to make sure eddie made it home to chris.

six years later, and buck would still give up everything he has to make sure eddie and chris make it home to each other.

This week Han, Cil, and Rachel make the friendship bracelets, take the moment (or several hours) and wade into the psychological depths of Season 4 Episode 5 of 9-1-1, “Buck Begins.”

We dive deep into one of the most demented, genius character origin stories the show has ever pulled off, unpacking the reveal that Buck was born a savior baby for his late brother Daniel and just how much of Buck's entire personality traces back to it. We bring the receipts too — actual psychology and medical research on emotional neglect, abandonment, and complex PTSD, because apparently every source out there studied Evan Buckley without knowing it. And of course, we drag Margaret and Philip Buckley through the mud for their station visit, because "we're proud of you for saving people like you were born to do" does not count as an apology!

From there we follow Buck cross country, breaking down every job on his postcard tour (mixologist, ranch hand, aspiring Navy SEAL, we catalog all of it), Maddie's gut punch of a goodbye note, and how a guy at a bar in Peru saying "you go, we go" somehow rerouted Buck's entire life to L.A. We also get into Athena's one scene this episode doing more parenting in thirty seconds than the Buckleys managed in thirty years!

Then there's Eddie, quietly rearranging his entire understanding of Buck in real time. We go on a real tangent about the Village People being extremely queer coded, and connect the dots between Margaret's "you think you're indestructible" and a certain someone telling Buck he's "not expendable" nine episodes later. He's also the first one to reach Buck in that fire, obviously, because nobody gets between these two being there for each other first.
