how manual wheelchair users move (explainer for non-users)
frequently when i’m out and about with someone walking, they can’t anticipate what path i will take and therefore they’re in my way pretty frequently. this is fine! i can politely ask them to step to the side. but it makes me think about how little non-wheelchair users understand the way wheelchair users move. as someone who used to walk everywhere, it was an adjustment period for me to figure out how to navigate the world in a chair. here are some things that didn’t occur to me so that you don’t cut off your friend right as they’re building momentum to go up a ramp 😆
for context, i use an active manual chair. the world is very different in a power chair. even among active manual chair users, there is a huge diversity in physicality and strategies for getting around. this is a general guide that i think will apply to most manual wheelchair users. i’m starting super basic and getting more complicated as i go.
———
1. manual wheelchairs are a momentum game. it is very easy to maintain speed and direction. but speeding up, slowing down, or turning, is hard. one thing this affects is if we’re on a wavy sidewalk or other twisty-turny walkway, that is a pain in the ass and i am taking as straight a path as i can.
2. wheelchair users also have to pay attention to the slope and condition of the pavement, so our path somewhere will be different than yours, even if we’re taking the same route to the same place. for example, i usually have to go down slopes straight, not diagonally, to avoid tipping over sideways. one area this affects is crosswalks. many intersections have one curb cut for both roads you could cross, which means i will go down curb cuts to a crosswalk as if i am aiming for the middle of the intersection.
your path in orange, mine in blue. to you it seems indirect, but to me it’s the path of least resistance.
i also will be building speed in the second half of the crosswalk. this is a much easier way to tackle a ramp. if i approach with momentum, i won’t have to drag myself up the slope once i get to it.
3. building momentum and maintaining it is only half of the job. the other half is stopping. manual wheelchairs cannot stop on a dime if they’re moving with any kind of speed. if i tried to stop immediately when going downhill, i would fly out of the chair. so don’t walk right into the path of a wheelchair in motion and then stop! i will have to turn to the side very quickly and hope i don’t tip. i can’t tell you how often parents pushing strollers will stop their stroller directly in my path and then get offended when i am alarmed and turn sharply to avoid hitting their child. from their perspective, i was being careless and going “too fast.” in reality, normal walking speed takes a few feet to slow down from and stop.
4. in terms of slope. see this street in san francisco?
i can’t go down this street, it’s way too steep. i would give myself friction burns on my palms trying to control my speed. if i was in a situation where there was no avoiding this street, like in an emergency, i would be breaking my straight-slope rule and zig-zagging in the middle of the road.
this would require several zig-zags back and forth, more than the four that i drew. i also could not go up this road other than with this method. up or down, i risk tipping over sideways if i’m not careful.
4. in a similar vein, consider terrain. slopes with grass or carpet take huge amounts of energy to get up. this grassy hill isn’t insurmountable, but it would take me like thirty minutes to get up there. honestly i would probably go backwards, because it’s easier to pull yourself up a slope than push yourself.
other types of terrain can be completely immobilizing, though. this decorative gravel pathway is beautiful, and inaccessible to me. my casters (front wheels) simply will not go through that.
5. in terms of walkways and obstacles. if there’s a deep gap in the pavement lined up the way i’m going, and it’s, say, an inch wide, that is an obstacle for me. my casters are one inch wide, and my back wheels are an inch and a half. i’ll get stuck in it like a train on a track.
i have to straddle this, even if it means being too close to the middle of the sidewalk and preventing us from walking side by side.
similarly, if a crack is greater than an inch high, i’m gonna wheelie over it. at two inches, i have to. a wheelie may require a change in speed, either faster or slower depending on the person.
i have 4 inch casters, so a lip as little as 2 inches will stop me in my tracks. a lip as little as one inch, hit with any speed, can knock my casters out of square. casters can get knocked out of alignment pretty easily depending on the chair. i’d rather not have to pull out an allen wrench and a level, so i’m gonna wheelie.
this happened when i hit about a 1.5” lip on a pavement crack when i was going downhill at maybe 3mph.
6. putting it all together. see how diagonal this crack is?
this is another situation where i have to go straight relative to the slope. because that crack is wide, it will probably also require a wheelie. if i tried to approach that straight relative to the sidewalk, my left caster would get up the slope, i’d wheelie, then my right caster would land in the crack. i have to go this way.
(also lol at the trash can blocking the curb cut)
these are just a few things to keep in mind when walking about with a wheelchair user! ofc the best strategy always is just to listen when someone asks you to move out of their way 😆 but i think being able to anticipate movement a little better will help it seem less random. feel free to ask any questions!
You ever think about how old people have no idea what “survivor bias” is, and take full credit for being excellent out of things where they lucked out?
“Back in my day we didn’t have any of these childhood protective things, we were smart enough not to do stupid shit on our own!” Except your little neighbour, who got the funniest idea at the age of seven, and got his skull pierced when he slipped?
“Back in my day nobody got divorced, we stuck together and fixed our problems!” What about your cousin, who was slowly killed by her husband because she had nowhere to escape him?
“Back in my day nobody had ‘mental problems’, we didn’t whine, we just toughed it out and endured life!” Hey remember that guy you used to work with, who seemed really friendly and normal, and then suddenly hanged himself ‘for no reason’?
“Back in my day we didn’t have any of this ‘gay’ or ‘transgender’ thing.” You did, but your family cut all ties with her before you were born.
You kinda start seeing it in everything they think, if you start looking for it.
“When we were kids nobody whined about car seats or bike helmets. We didn’t use them, and we all survived!”
Yeah, except for the ones who didn’t.

genuinely irritated about the prevalence of brother-sister character designs where the brother has a huge nose and the sister has a tiny nose. 1) why are you a coward who hates the joy and beauty of women with big noses 2) have you looked at any real human siblings lately 3) why do you appear to think the nose is a secondary sex characteristic
wishing all women with big noses a beautiful day i hope you get everything you want forever and i'm sorry about the rank cowardice of general society you deserve better

Apparently some people still need to hear this so: using an 'ai checker' is still using ai. If you are feeding someone's fic to one of these checkers, you will still not be sure their fic is ai because they are not 100% accurate, but you can be 100% sure that you are using ai. For fic. Furthermore you are doing the work of an ai scraper for them. You are, personally, feeding the machine. There is no actual excuse for using an ai checker on fanfic as a hobby. YOU are the problem.
If you think a fic is ai, mute it and move on. That's it. That's all you do.
“spicy pillow” jokes aside, I think @flowerkrone’s tags deserve a serious reply:
#my old phone looks like this on my shelf lmao #im too scared to touch it to throw it away #idk what trash this even goes into when its at this point
The pillow-shaped object here used to be the phone’s battery. It’s not a battery anymore. Now it’s a balloon full of corrosive, pyrophoric chemicals and hydrogen gas and it’s one puncture away from burning your house down. I am 100% serious. You should be scared to touch it.
But you gotta touch it, because you gotta get it out of your house before the pressure builds up to the point where the balloon pops. This isn’t going to happen soon – there is no need to panic – but it will happen eventually.
And, indeed, it doesn’t go in the ordinary trash. You put this in the ordinary trash and you’re gonna set the garbage truck on fire. Don’t do that to the garbage collectors, their job is hard enough already.
The first thing you need to do is get a fireproof container. The most common household item that qualifies as a fireproof container is a cast-iron cookpot with a cast-iron lid – often sold as a “Dutch oven.” Any other cooking container that’s unreactive, has a very high melting point, and has a lid made of the same materials will also work: enameled or stainless steel, Pyrex with glass lid, etc.
However: Do not use a pot with a PTFE-based non-stick coating. If the battery does explode, the fire will probably be hot enough to degrade a PTFE coating, producing toxic smoke. (Not that you should breathe the smoke from the battery fire either, but PTFE breakdown products are worse.) Do not use a pot made of aluminium or copper. The fire might even get hot enough to melt those.
Whatever container you use, you might have to throw away along with the phone, so don’t use your good Dutch oven for this. Go to a thrift store and buy a cheap one.
Once you have the fireproof container:
Gently pick up the phone and put it in the fireproof container. If possible, gently tape the phone to the bottom of the container to prevent it from bouncing around. Don’t put any padding in there, that’ll just make a fire worse if it does happen. Put the lid on and tape it shut.
Put a label on the container, something like “DEFECTIVE LI-ION BATTERY – FIRE HAZARD”.
It is now reasonably safe to move the container around. However, if the battery does explode, the container is very likely to leak smoke and get hot, so keep it in a well-ventilated area and away from things that will be damaged by heat. Don’t leave it exposed to the weather, either.
You need to find either a hazardous waste disposal site, or an e-waste recycler that will accept defective Li-ion batteries. I can’t help with that because I have no idea where you live.
However, your local fire department, if you have one, will probably be happy to help. Call their non-emergency number. Nothing is on fire yet, so this isn’t an emergency, but things that can easily start a fire are still within the fire department’s responsibilities. Tell them you have a phone with a bulging lithium-ion battery, you put it in a fireproof container, and you want to know how to dispose of it safely.
If the fire department tries to tell you this isn’t dangerous or it’s okay to throw it out in the regular trash (with or without fireproof container), hang up on them and write a cranky letter to your local government representatives, then keep looking for a proper disposal site.
When you do find a a hazardous waste disposal site or an e-waste recycler, call them and make sure they will take defective Li-ion batteries, before showing up. That’s also a good time to ask if they will let you have the fireproof container back.

Reblogging because I would have had absolutely no idea what to do, either.
This started happening to my laptop battery. The keyboard started just, coming outward. I had not known this and assumed it was a mechanical issue from my laptop falling or hitting something (I was careful, but I trusted it to be sturdy). Simultaneously, the battery never held. I took it to the repair shop and the repairmen said the battery had swollen, and if I had delayed even a day or two, my laptop would’ve caught on fire.
I remembered this post then, and was so grateful.

I just got a really really good idea for a visual gag that unfortunately only works in an animated artistic medium that uses chowder style static textures for clothes. And now I’m pissed off that I can’t find a series of words to write a description of the gag that would have any chance of working as a joke because it requires too much setup and the punchline wouldn’t be punchy in a text medium. (T ^ T)
[In a Chowder style cartoon world where clothing uses static background textures]
Character A: *Accidentally spills something on her shirt and it leaves a stain*
*Looks around to see if anyone noticed.*
*Takes a few steps to the side, moving along the static background texture causing the stain to ‘slide’ away and not be visible anymore*
[later in the episode, a completely different scene with completely different framing]
Character A: *Walks along with the rest of the cast across the screen into the same spot on the screen where she was when she spilled on her shirt. The stain was on the same spot in the background texture this whole time she just happened to avoid it throughout the episode til now. This causes the stain to ‘slide’ onto her shirt again, but shes further from the ‘camera’ now so the stain covers way more of her shirt.*
Character B: *Points the stain out and laughs at her for managing to get such a huge stain on her clothes*
Character A: *Gets embarrassed and defensive saying it’s the shot composition’s fault*
Character C: *Looks up and scolds the animator for not doing the cast’s laundry between scenes*
Faceless animator from off screen: *Tries to make excuses about not having time and trying to meet the episode deadline*
Character C: *Crosses her arms and turns her head away, says she’s disappointed in them*
Offscreen animator’s giant hand: *Reluctantly grabs the static clothing texture and pulls it away*
Character A: *Her shirt clothing texture is replaced with blank white void. She gets embarrassed and tries to cover herself up as if she was naked*
[Cut to short live action sequence of the disembodied hand of the animator throwing the static texture cloth into the washing machine, adding stain remover and starting the machine.]
[Time passes. Cut to disembodied hand tapping its fingers impatiently right before the washing machine dings complete. The hand throws it in the dryer. Resumes tapping impatiently]
[Time Passes. Cut to disembodied hand seemingly being asleep, then the dryer dings waking them up. Hand takes texture out of the dryer. Starts bringing the texture back to the set.]
Character C, offscreen: *Shouts at the animator demanding they iron it too*
[Cut to disembodied hand frantically ironing the texture.]
[Cut back to animated scene with main cast still at the same scene. Character A is still embarrassed and trying to cover herself up. Character B is asleep and loudly cartoonishly snoring. Character C is looking up at where ‘the animator’ is, impatiently tapping her foot and scowling]
Disembodied Hand: *Frantically tries to put the texture back in place. Accidentally puts it on upside down.*
Character C, scowling: *Raises an eyebrow*
Disembodied hand: *Frantically rearranges the texture and finally gets it in place correctly*
Character C, eyebrow still raised: *Asks if they’re forgetting something*
Disembodied hand, ‘standing’ on the ‘ground’ of the scene with its middle and ring finger posed as legs and its pointer and pinky as arms: *Goes into dogeza pose and desperately apologizes*
Character C: *Accepts apology, but gives a threatening warning not to let it happen again*
Disembodied hand: *’Runs’ offscreen frantically*
[The episode resumes as if nothing happened. This gag is never repeated and is never addressed for the rest of the show’s running]
Thinking about yesterday's post, re: Grocky and Adrian and potential rock divorce 😂 I've got this dumb scenario rotating in my mind so now you get to hear it lol
Things on Erid have more or less settled. Their sun is healing, the biodome is built, the human is stable and thriving. He is so very grateful for the fact that Erid at large built him a home, created food for him, is taking care of him. Now that he isn't half dead anymore he is so happy to offer his knowledge and expertise. He is a really good teacher, and the kids love him. He is so passionate about scientific pursuits, and there's basically a constant stream of Eridian scientists flocking from all over the planet to be able to speak to him and learn from the knowledge of his people that he is so willingly sharing. Everything seems perfect, right?
There's one teeny tiny sticking point, though. It's the sort of thing that everyone knows but will only whisper and murmur about in badly-hidden secret rather than point at it directly.
Erid got its one hero back. One single survivor who shies away from public appearances, who could only bear to meet the families of the lost crew mates in short, painful bursts, who can barely speak of those crew mates' last words before going entirely nonverbal for hours on end.
The one hero who seems to prefer spending 90% of his time hanging out in an entirely toxic and deadly atmosphere, only a thin mesh of xenonite body armor keeping them safe. Everyone hates having to wear those things, they are so uncomfortable and feel so unsafe. But the hero seems more at ease when hidden inside one of those than in their very home planet's atmosphere.
When the alien ship first got in contact, everyone built in their minds a dream, a romantic reunion between the sole survivor and now hero of the planet, finally returned to their loving mate. It was the stuff of legends, the sort of thing you'd only thing about in fiction.
Except, you know, the hero is a ptsd ridden mess who basically threw one of the taumoeba farms at the first scientist in their path going "here, this will heal the sun, NOW I NEED EVERYONE AND I MEAN EVERYONE ON THIS PLANET TO MAKE SURE MY HUMAN IS KEPT ALIVE OR I WILL KILL EVERYONE IN THIS WORLD AND THEN MYSELF"
So, yeah, romantic reunion went right out the window, but alright. Eridians are a sturdy bunch and can roll with the punches, and Erid isn't ungrateful. The human was willing to sacrifice his life for their hero, for a planet who didn't even know of his existence. The human was ready to die to heal their sun and ALSO gifted them a machine containing all the cumulative knowledge of his people, which really, is exceedingly kind. Erid isn't ungrateful, and so if the human needs a specifically built environment and food he can eat for his survival, that's what the human gets. If the human wants to be a teacher as an enrichment activity, the human becomes a teacher.
Thing are stable and people are expecting for their hero to Chill Out soon. Any second now. At some point? Maybe?
And especially for those who work around the clock on the biodome and to keep the human healthy this is SO uncomfortable. The people of Erid are starting to wonder What Is Going On between their hero and the human. Rumors of infidelity are rampant. The poor Eridian whose main task is to ask the human feedback about the taste of his specifically made food got asked by their parent-in-law, all hush hush, if it was true that the hero was secretly getting mated with the human. It's a mess.
And like, all these eridians who are in fairly close contact with the human on a daily basis DO wonder, because their hero is very... Huh... Touchy-feely with the human. And sure, the human needs a certain amount of contact and touch to be healthy, but also his house is soundproofed because a bit of privacy is required for his mental health, and who the fuck knows what the hero and the human get up to in there? Certain not anyone on the biodome/human upkeep teams.
So they just kind of have to live with this and it's... Fine. Uncomfortable, yes, but they aren't going to say a thing, are they? After all, the human won't stay around for long. He is already halfway through the average lifespan of his species, and the wounds he sustained plus prolonged time in space likely shaved off some of that lifespan, too. Which is perhaps a bit mean to think about because like, aside from maybe possibly allegedly abetting the maybe possibly alleged infidelity the human is genuinely a really nice guy, and it's sad to know he'll be dead soon, but also that's maybe for the better. Once he is gone the biodome will just become an interesting novelty for future eridians to visit to learn about their cosmic neighbors and, sure, the hero's crashout is going to be legendary in the worst possible way, but they have contingency plans to support them and help them deal with the grief, and then things will get back to normal after that, right?
Except one day an upstart little thrum of frankly overzealous, overexcited and overachieving xenobiologists pay a visit to share great news. They've been obsessively working, blessed by the Pandora's box of research that the human so lovingly shared with Erid at large, and to show the depths of their gratitude they have prepared an Extend Your Human's Lifespan and Keep It Healthy! Serum, results a 100% guaranteed.
And everyone has to sit there in muted, private horror, thinking NOOOOOOOOOO WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU DO THAT?!?! I HEARD FROM MY COUSIN WHO HEARD FROM THEIR COUSIN WHO HEARD FROM THEIR COUSIN THAT THE HERO'S THERAPIST WAS FINALLY MAYBE GUIDING THE HERO TO MAKE THE FIRST TEENY TINY LITTLE STEP IN POSSIBLY MAYBE ACCEPTING THAT THE HUMAN WAS POSSIBLY MAYBE GOING TO DIE SOON! YOU JUST RUINED IT!
And nobody's gonna say it because, first of all: Mean. Again, the human is SUCH a nice guy, if you don't take into account that whole alleged infidelity stuff. And secondly the hero is going almost apoplectic with joy at the prospect, and if anyone says something that even remotely sounds like "maybe this isn't such a good idea" the hero is going to rip all of their limbs out one by one, no doubt.
And somewhere up in the biodome crew somebody just threw their badge on the ground, screeched "FUCK THIS SHIT! I QUIT!!!" and promptly called the divorce attorney they've had on speed-dial for XX years, by that point.
the year is 2035. the new beauty standard is for women to cut their ears off, as ears are a masculine trait which make the face look too big and hearing isnt necessary as it doesnt align with being demure. evil feminists say perhaps this is unnecessary and ears are natural. women are agressively proclaiming they are cutting their ears off due to sensory issues
oh wow you’re not gonna believe this but turns out i was unnecessarily anxious for no reason. how unexpected
who knew overthinking would only drag me down only for it to prove itself to be absolutely pointless
