Elvesssssss
I often wonder what I'm like in other people's dreams. Do people dream of me?
I'm dreaming of them, hazily dozing in and out of our subconscious.
Checking in, hello, do you remember me? I'm trying to remember you in this glow, fog and snow.
I think you think of me. I certainly think of you. My dreams tell me to.
You’re a daycare worker, watching over toddlers, when the imminent end of the world is announced. It becomes increasingly clear none of the kids’ parents are going to show up as the end inches nearer.
[Audio starts]
“Mom has been texting me for the last twenty minutes. She wants me to come home. It’s a four hour drive, when the roads are clear, and from what I hear everybody is trying to get somewhere right now. There’s no telling if I’d even-”
“Everybody else has left. All the other kids were picked up, the other staff left. They gave me all the keys. I promised to stay and wait for as long as- well. Even if some of the parents show up, I guess some of them won’t, so I’m just waiting. Until.”
[Clears throat.]
“A couple of people came after everybody left. Peter, one of Aidan’s fathers, gave me three hundred dollars for staying. What am I going to do with money? It’s- anyway. I kind of get it. He wanted to give me something.”
[Audio ends]
[Audio starts]
“They’re all between 2 and 4.” Sniff. “They’re so little. Too little to really- maybe if they were older, I’d have to tell them something. But um. I’m just- trying to stay calm and keep them happy and occupied. I think that’s the best thing, right now.”
[Heaving breaths.]
“I normally use this recorder to help me remember stuff. It’s just, uh, habit to talk to it. I don’t know. They’re napping, right now. I’ve got the baby monitor, they know that if they talk into it, I’ll come, so-”
[Sobbing.]
[Audio ends]
[Audio starts]
“Mom keeps texting, so I blocked her. I sent her a text telling her goodbye, first, but. I do. But these kids need me.”
[Sniff.]
“I tried calling their parents again, but I can’t get anybody. It’s just busy signals. I called the firefighter station, 911. I can’t get through to anybody.”
[Shaky breath.]
“I went out into the yard. Um, I think they can play. It’s nice out, and you can’t really see it yet. Little bit of a glimmer, if they ask I’ll just tell them it’s a plane, but it’s nice out and we’ve got hours before-”
[Murmuring child’s voice, indistinguishable.]
[Audio ends]

Please help support this amazing non-profit that I've been a part of since I was 9 years old. We go into schools and organizations and teach kids the importance of individualism and anti-bullying all while being a safe space for all of them to be themselves and express it all though the timeless stories of the bard himself. I don't know where I'd be without The Shakespeare Project, and I don't want to. The countless memories I have and lessons learned are rewards I'll have for the rest of my life.
We weren't able to finish our season this year cause of the covid(thanks 2020), so we had to refund all of the payments for our project from the families of the kids. Its heart breaking, everything was going so well, my 3rd year as assistant director and there really seemed to be hope on the horizon for us to get out of the hole. But that wasn't in the cards I guess.
Word is we have to raise $10,000 USD by January or its the end of the Project and Core Company and By Kids For Kids. Please please please, I know its a really hard time right now and everyone is hurting but anything can help, even if you jus share to get this on to a richer person's feed. This project means the world to me, and I don't wanna say goodbye
I talked to a young man with white hair on a boat cabin in the middle of a stormy sea. He forgot everything about himself exept for the fact that his name rhymed with ‘Time’ so he started calling himself Time.
I offered him an orange in exchange for a meaningful chat. He took the slice and told me “Nothing’s set in stone, but they’re set in a dirt road. If you roll your wagon in the same path too much it’ll soon be the only path you can take without struggling.”

We are like fireworks…: Surnames Master Post.
Low key I'm kinda bored of and annoyed by the preponderance of works that have Boring If Not Outright Malevolent Angels on one side and Nuanced, Charismatic, And Honestly Not Evil Demons because it just seems like a perpetuation of the idea that good is fundamentally flat or banal or not even good at all, that Goodness is something performed to achieve something else, usually power or control. In fact, I don't object to nuanced demons so much as the imbalance (only the "evil" side is allowed to be anything approching, well, approachable.)
But then I'm like "well identification with monsters is something that marginalized groups often feel because it forces us to question what is monstrous, so the idea of finding compassion and humanity in those deemed inherently unforgivable is actually very powerful and subversive"
But then I'm like "but is it subversive or is it laziness? It's hardly revolutionary at this point, it's like people making children's toys scary. It's supposed to have a tension between what something should be (childlike, innocent) and making it wicked. But now it's so common that dolls are often considered inherently creepy. So where's the subversion in a creepy doll? There's none. Where's the subversion in mean Angels or angels who have no interest in or love for humanity?"
But then I'm like "well but aren't angels traditionally destroying cities and saying Be Not Afraid?"
And I'm like, again just to myself as I pace my kitchen, "I mean YEAH but they're also like flaming wheels or whatever, I'm not sure how much these works are genuinely interested in angel mythology"
Then as I make coffee for myself, I think, "angels represent the traditional hierarchy, the traditional Christian dogma, and therefore are stand ins for the authority that we must question"
But then, as I realize we are out of sugar and my coffee is therefore ruined and am thus more susceptible to thinking there are demonic forces at work in this world, I go, "but demons in these stories aren't systemically kind. They're just cool. They're individuals and help individuals if they feel like it. In these stories, there's no mass concern for all of humanity really."
And then I conclude, "maybe angels are written cruelly because the world seems cruel and therefore there cannot be a Divine force involved in our daily activities looking out for us. Demons are by their nature doomed to fail which makes stories where they try to do Good have a more natural conflict and also explains why things in the world aren't better. For if there were angels, a legion of angels, always at work, shouldn't things be better? But we don't know how the world could otherwise be. But it seems hard to argue that this is in fact the best of all possible worlds. So demons make an easier to identify with protagonist while also being powerful and having cosmic impact. I believe many stories doing their own take on angels and demons would benefit from truly trying to imagine angels and beings of love, rather than the cold and distant figures I often see in fiction, but I understand the framework behind that conception."
Then I add to myself, "of course since I'm mostly talking about like urban fantasy, it might also be that people just wanna fuck demons more."
Maybe this is also because it is easier to accept a complicated evil than a complicated good. Someone could do a studenously good deed and still be Evil, but if do something tremendously bad, it's gonna be a tough claim to still be Good. It's like the DnD problem of a party with mixed alignments, where I feel like you'll end up listing towards Good more often than not because your evil character can refrain from Murder today and still be Evil, but your good character can't be like "okay do a murder, I just won't look" and still be Good.
(Although maybe this view presupposes Good as in fact Neutral, where we argue that not actively doing harm is Good. This returns to my original point, that we need Active Agents of Systemic Good in the world. Make good a verb. She gooded very well today, I'm so proud.)
Perhaps this is also related to the idea that there is a Correct Way to be Good but many ways to be Bad. To paraphrase Tolstoy, Good people are all alike; every Bad person is Bad in their own way. If Good is singular than any deviation from it is Bad. How could you write angels if that was true then? They'd all be the exact same.
If Good is not singular, if there is not One Good but many kinds of good, then characters can be in conflict about doing good and still be Good themselves. A multiplicity of good is an inherently subversive idea when paired with the idea that people use ideas of what is Good to enforce what is acceptable. When Good is an unquestionable dogma, then deviance from that Good becomes an act of necessary rebellion.
When Good is diverse and multiform, we have to think very critically about the common factors of different types of Good, and perhaps by defining what Good is not (by, in effect, instead defining Evil as a singular ideal) we can deepen out own understanding about what it actually means for a living complex person to be Good and to recognize Goodness in a diversity of forms, the same way you can look at a corgi and a wolfhound and still recognize them both as Dog.
I think one problem is that Tolstoy was wrong (in my oh-so-humble opinion) and the paraphrase is likewise wrong, but a lot of people buy into those ideas anyway (that happiness and goodness are uniform and dull). People can’t recognize that... oh, taking Les Misérables, that Jean Valjean is good by building the community while the Bishop is good by welcoming the outcast/supporting the suffering while Enjolras is good by fighting oppression, and that all these goods have differing outcomes and uses and needs. And of course you’ve listed a lot of reasons, from a reading perspective, why it might be difficult to write good angels (not least explaining the problem of evil!)
But from a writing perspective, I think there’s another problem: writing purely Good characters is nigh-impossible. What is good, for a start, if we throw out the rigidity of adhering to x authoritarian system and y checklists, then advance beyond vague guiding principles?
C.S. Lewis pointed out that he had very little trouble writing The Screwtape Letters as something from the perspective of a demon advising a demon on advancing evil, but “I had [...] a sort of grudge against my book for not being a different book which no one could write. Ideally, Screwtape's advice to Wormwood should have been balanced by archangelical advice to the patient's guardian angel. Without this the picture of human life is lopsided. But who could supply the deficiency? [...] every sentence would have to smell of Heaven.” How in the world do we prevent our own flaws and limitations from tarnishing fictional characters portrayed as purely good?
But honestly, a lot of it feels like People Who Do Not Have Enough Experience With Folklore. There are spaces in folklore for a wide spectrum of complicated angels, demons, saints, sinners, fairies, vampires, werewolves, etc etc etc. It really bugs me when I read a story where a person uses the name of a legendary being without conversing with its history in any way, or worse, conversing with a single shard of its history and ignoring the complexity of the rest. It’s not as bad as stereotyping human groups despite complex, nuanced histories being available, but it’s still ugly in any work trying to employ nuance and complexity.
ok so there’s a game me and my friends play called “don’t get me started” and basically someone gives another person a random topic and they have to go on an angry rant about it and it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to us at parties and car rides so I highly recommend playing sometimes with your friends
I love this idea. We used to do things like this in Improv.
Related game: “THINK ABOUT IT.” You’re given a random topic, and your job is to build it into an epic conspiracy theory, the crazier the better. You end your rant with a serious face and the command that your listeners “Think about it.”
Another related game: Illuninati. Similar to Think About It except you are given 2 completely different topics and you have to connect them to each other in a wild conspiracy rant
Rb to safe an awkward hang out
me and my friends play “World’s Greatest Expert” where one of the other players says “Hey, I heard you’re the world’s greatest expert on ____” and you have to give an in depth (and probably completely false) lecture about the thing you’re the greatest expert on. Other players are allowed to ask you questions.
I can do all of these no problem
It’s the art of bullshitting and I’m the damn creator of it
i can’t wait to try all of these

“Folly it may seem,” said Haldir. “Indeed in nothing is the power of the Dark Lord more clearly shown than in the estrangement that divides all those who still oppose him. Yet so little faith and trust do we find now in the world beyond Lothlórien, unless maybe in Rivendell, that we dare not by our own trust endanger our land. We live now upon an island amid many perils, and our hands are more often upon the bowstring than the harp.
“The rivers long defended us, but they are a sur guard no more; for the Shadow has crept northward all about us. Some speak of departing, yet for that it already seems too late. The mountains to the west are growing evil; to the east the lands are waste, and full of Sauron’s creatures; and it is rumored that we cannot now safely pass southward through Rohan, and the mouths of the Great River are watched by the enemy. Even if we could come to the shores of the Sea, we should find no longer any shelter there. It is said that there are still havens of the High Elves, but they are far north and west, beyond the land of the Halflings. But where that may be, though the Lord and Lady may know, I do not.”
“You ought at least to guess, since you have seen us,” said Merry. “There are Elf-havens west of my land, the Shire, where Hobbits live.”
“Happy folk are Hobbits to dwell near the shores of the sea!” said Haldir. “It is long indeed since any of my folk have looked on it, yet still we remember it in song. Tell me of the havens as we walk.”
“I cannot,” said Merry. “I have never seen them. I have never been out of my own land before. And if I had known what the world outside was like, I don’t think I should have the heart to leave it.”
“Not even to see fair Lothlórien?” said Haldir. “The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.
“Some there are among us who sing that the Shadow will draw back, and peace shall come again. Yet I do not believe that the world about us will ever again be as it was of old, or the light of the Sun as it was aforetime. For the Elves, I fear, it will prove at best a truce, in which they may pass to the Sea unhindered and leave the Middle-Earth for ever. Alas for Lothlórien that I love! It would be a poor life in a land where no mallorn grew. But if there are mallorn-trees beyond the Great Sea, none have reported it.

site that you can type in the definition of a word and get the word
site for when you can only remember part of a word/its definition
site that gives you words that rhyme with a word
site that gives you synonyms and antonyms
THAT FIRST SITE IS EVERY WRITER’S DREAM DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I’VE TRIED WRITING SOMETHING AND THOUGHT GOD DAMN IS THERE A SPECIFIC WORD FOR WHAT I’M USING TWO SENTENCES TO DESCRIBE AND JUST GETTING A BUNCH OF SHIT GOOGLE RESULTS
Oh my God, yes
Okay, I tested that first site. Let me just say…. WHERE THE HECK WAS THIS WHEN I STARTED WRITING?! It’s so amazing I want to cry. I can’t even begin to remember all of the times when I was stuck in my writing because I forgot what a word was. I knew the definition, but for the life of me I couldn’t remember the word itself.
For myself
So about Unexpected Journey
So I have had this issue for SO LONG and I haven’t been able to articulate it, which is endlessly frustrating, but Y’all know that scene where Fili and Kili are teasing Bilbo about the Orc pack? not only are they just trying to have a bit of fun, Thorin gets really pissed at them for it, and when they try to apologize; “Sorry Uncle…we didn’t mean anything by it.” HE GETS EVEN MORE UPSET!!
“Of course you didn’t….” he snarls. “…You know nothing of the world.”
AND I HATE THAT HE REACTS THAT WAY!!!
yes, he hates orcs, yes he has every right to hate orcs, they took almost everything he had left after Smaug came, and tore it all to shreds. but that is NOT Fili and Kili’s fault! if anything, Thorin is the REASON that they don’t know anything about Orcs, or the world outside of Dwarven Culture. Thorin led his people out from occupied Erebor, into the blue mountains and Erid Luin, and built them a new life. granted, not as rich and extravagant as life in Erebor had been, but they were alive, safe, and relatively happy. they didn’t have to worry about Dragons, or Orcs, or Elves, hell, until they joined up with the company, Fili and Kili had probably never even SEEN an elf. Thorin did all that. he was so damned good at his job as Acting Monarch, that the generation born after The Desolation has legit NO concept of any of the dangers their parents faced. Fili, Kili, Ori, and maybe Nori have never lived in Erebor, they weren’t there when Smaug attacked, or when the dwarves tried to take back Khazad-dum, and Thorin acts like that’s a bad thing. like dude, I know it hurts to think about orcs and dragons and dwarves, but at least take a little pride in knowing that you did your job as Most Badass Uncle Ever, SO WELL, that your nephews have no concept of how dangerous an orc is. they’ll learn, and they’ll learn pretty damn quick, but at least they survived infancy long enough to have the chance to learn.
it amazes me how people still think fiction doesn’t affect reality when about 90% of us ran like naruto without a second thought just because we saw him do it and thought it was cool
this is going to be the only valid reply because that’s the reason I did it
for a more pertinent example- the creators of the original 70s ‘star trek’ created wrist communicators for plot purposes so crew on the ground could still communicate with crew on the spaceship because writing sometime in the early 80s a lot of actual scientists realized that sounded really cool and actually doable so lets create cellphones then later people who read ‘hitchhikers guide’ realized we had 80% of what the hitchhikers guide was and made a kindle Agatha Christie wrote mystery novels so precice she accurately predicted methods of poisoning that had not even happened yet, and her works are still used today to teach people how to diagnose poisonings bot malign and accidental. heck her understanding of toxicology was so on point she proposed antidotes for poisons made from poisons with opposite effects, allowing patients to be stabilized after otherwise fatal doses lets not forget the OG himself HG Welles who pulled stuff out of his ass like submarines, cross-continent flight, space travel, eccetera and later people realized that his fever dreams were something you could actually do with enough math and engineering in the late 40s Frances Glessner Lee started making dollhouses that contained crime scenes, only partially a hobby she was creating fantasy mysteries to puzzle people as there was no specific solution to the crime scenes she created. these dollhouses are still used to train detectives today and are considered to be the birth of modern forensics, solving thousands of crimes hell, someone read the 1911 story ‘ Tom Swift and His Electric Rifle’, which was largely schlock and realized a gun that shoots electricity sounds pretty awesome so made the TAZER, and the E and R still stand for ‘electric rifle’ and thats not counting the uncounted human moments when someone decided to do or not do something based on childhood memories of movies that shaped their personality, decided to do something based on a song that inspired them, got the courage by remembering a well written superhero moment, or some part of their soul that asked what their favorite muppet would think about their actions
nvm this is a valid response just intellectual
