SANCTUARY APPRECIATION WEEK
Day One (Character Celebration) Helen Magnus
i love this scene so much for three reasons:
1) nikola showed up way too fast for him to have been still in area 51 when he got whatever alert he set up to tell him that the nanite had escaped. was he just hanging out in a wine bar in new city brainstorming excuses to wander into the sanctuary again or what lmao
2) will isn’t actually the slightest bit surprised that nikola is there, just annoyed, which just lends further proof for the idea that he just drops by whenever he feels like it lol
3) nikola was standing with his back to the door when will opened it apparently for the sole purpose of turning to face him as dramatically as possible, which is not only perfectly in character for him in general but it just hit me that maybe he was hoping helen would be the one to answer the door😂 he must’ve been so pissed that his dramatic entrance was wasted on will shdjfhdjfjffjjfkgk
On #1 - Does he have an alert on his phone or something that tells him when there's an issue with the security system? Because he already knew when he got there lmao. Also is he just monitoring the Sanctuary's security system all the time anyway to make sure Helen is safe? If so I wonder when he started doing that, maybe after the radiation poisoning thing? I feel like Helen's aware that he's doing it since he's not really the type to stalk her without her knowing. Also like does he send annoying texts anytime he gets an alert and he's not in the area lol
sgshdhdhdfjfkdhfkfk i love this so much. maybe he set it up not immediately after the radiation poisoning but after the very next episode with the ugly little creature that made everyone attack each other. he’s still worried about her after everything that happened so he tries to check on her, only she’s not answering her phone bc of the spotty cell service in wherever she was coming back from at the start of that ep. next he tries to call the sanctuary directly but nobody answers bc they’re all busy trying to kill each other, and then he tries to access their system remotely and he learns that the security protocols are all down. so he freaks out and gets on a plane to investigate in person, but by the time he gets to the sanctuary helen and the others have already resolved the situation.
i can totally see him insisting on setting up some kind of monitoring system so that he gets an alert every time there’s a serious problem instead of being caught off guard like that again so soon after almost losing her, and i can see helen letting him do it for his own peace of mind (and hers too, although she’d never admit it makes her feel safe to know he’s looking out for her sgshdhdhdjdjk).
anyway he starts blowing up her phone every time the sanctuary’s security system has the slightest hiccup, and he also starts dropping by more often (“the guy who invented alternating current blowing in on his way through town” and “i don’t like it when you visit” lmao) bc sometimes he just needs to see for himself that helen is okay
It always amazes me how different these 3 women are. When I’m watching Stargate I don’t feel like I’m watching Amanda Tapping or Helen Magnus. I’m watching Samantha Carter. Same goes with Sanctuary. I’m watching Helen Magnus, not Amanda or Sam. And then when I watch interviews and conventions I’m watching Amanda Tapping. Not one of her characters. That’s one of the things I really love about Amanda. That and all her other flawlessness…
Totally agree! Amanda’s acting is absolutely incredible. It’s not just the change of hair colour or accent either. It’s in the simple way she holds herself, the way she cocks her head, the way she stares at you. Everything is so different it’s like watching 3 different women.
And then there’s the fact that as both Sam (Grace, Gemini (even Repli!Carter is totally different), In the Line of Duty, Entity etc) and Helen (Requiem, Out of the Blue, Tempus(!!!), etc) she just acts her ass off and gives these breathtaking performances that grip at your heart and show soooo much emotion with the slightest effort and feel so, so real even when she’s fighting abnormals or aliens or herself.

The more frustrated I get that the "Broody Bad Boy Edgelord™ is the endgame love interest" trope is still at the peak of popularity for some reason, the more I appreciate that Nikola was the complete antithesis of that. Aside from his first episode, where again, I don't think the writers knew what to do with him yet, he's not really that much of a bad boy type? Well, maybe he kind of is, because he's got a cocky attitude and is always doing unhinged things that get him into trouble (which Helen basically admits she's attracted to). But he's not actually that dangerous? He's this class clown theatre kid who happens to be a vampire who also happens to have superhuman control over his violent instincts, so (again, aside from his first episode) he's never really a threat to Helen. He's just this absolute doofus putting on a "sexy charmer with a reckless streak" act (which works, as much as Helen tries to deny it) that makes it look like he's a cookie-cutter bad boy without him really being that. Not to mention that for all his flirting, he does give Helen space both to be herself and to set the terms of the relationship. He very obviously wants to be with her, but he's not pushy about it. He just messes with her when he knows she's receptive to the flirting, and he plays along when she pushes back.
He also doesn't brood frequently--the most notable exceptions being the end of "Sleepers" and the beginning of "Sanctuary for None" where he's going on about the pigeons. And even when he does brood, it's not like John's brand of brooding, which is more stereotypical. It's him acting like an overdramatic wine aunt who is trying to get drunk at the family reunion much to the chagrin of her relatives. He doesn't adopt this angry sadboi persona who needs to destroy things, he just starts whining like Aunt Sharon lamenting the fact that she's on her third divorce. I also think on some level he knows that Helen secretly finds it funny, so he plays it up to amuse her even if she'll never admit that she appreciates the levity. Also, part of the reason Helen is into him is because she's just as unhinged as he is. This isn't a story about some perfect good girl who gets "corrupted" by the bad boy, this is a story about two equally insane scientists who become best friends because they are equally insane and fall in love because they are equally insane. Nikola is just more obvious about his insanity while Helen pretends to be normal but really she is just Very British About It™. They get each other because they're both crazy science freaks who are so in tune with each other that they can finish each other's sentences even when they're bickering. Anyway, I just find this fascinating because you'd expect the vampire side of the love triangle to be the angry broody one, especially since Sanctuary came out during the height of the Twilight era when that was all the rage. But instead, the guy who is not a vampire is the angry broody one and the vampire is the quirky best friend who's been pining for the girl for years. And then he's the one who actually ends up with her (or is implied to end up with her) at the end? They completely turned that whole concept on its head and it's honestly kind of hilarious
this is pure speculation that only just now occurred to me but i think maybe part of the reason that helen didn’t realize she was in love with nikola for so long is because before she figured out she was bi, she had crushes on female friends and therefore thought it was normal to feel that deeply and strongly about a platonic friend. and since her feelings for nikola felt different from the love she felt for john, she didn’t realize it was that kind of love
the more i think about this the funnier it is that it took helen so ridiculously long to accept that she had real feelings for nikola. this woman was born and raised in repressed victorian england and she really went “i can handle being attracted to women but i draw the line at my male best friend”
The BTS for The Kiss™ is fascinating to me because while I love how sweet the final cut is where Helen reaches for Nikola and cradles his head 🥺
I'm intrigued by the knowledge that there was a version where she apparently just grabbed him and yanked him forward before he knew what was happening sksksjshhddhssfddsdds
After watching this again I'm glad they chose the take they did because it sells the emotion far better than the one in the video. Helen grabbing him is great and I love the way she just goes for it, but the final version is much more affectionate and screams "I love you" with the way Helen is touching him and Nikola is just staring at her. They get to sit with the emotion a little longer

has this been done already

apparently i’m in an animus kind of mood today
as a lover of Women Fighting & Killing media it's so important to me when they actually let the women look like shit. you know what i mean. like im so bored when a woman is in what's supposed to be a brutal fight and her hair is just aesthetically tousled or something and her makeup is still pristine. fuck offfff. if she's beating the shit out of someone and fighting for her life she should be covered in blood n bile she should look like she got hit by a truck and the truck exploded
Helen Magnus' favorite hobbies:

It still baffles me how this
Is the same person
Like I obviously see it, but she's such a good actress, I don't even realise half the time
right?? like i know it’s the same person but every time i see her in something different it really feels like it’s a different person every time

headcanon: after helen adopted henry his aptitude for technology became obvious almost immediately, so helen starts focusing on his education a lot more and basically gives him free reign in the library to learn about anything he wants. so he starts reading up on famous scientists and develops a bit of hero worship for nikola tesla (obviously the version in the history books and not the sassy vampire we all know and love). and henry is old enough to know that doctor magnus is a lot older than she looks, so he starts wondering if she met any of the people he’s reading about. anyway one day he innocently asks her if she ever met nikola tesla and she promptly chokes on her tea
