Here’s the thing about bonus chapters: they aren’t that important. They’re intended to be extra moments for the fans, but the general readers should be able to buy the novels without having read the bonus chapters.

Wings & Ember, for instance, serves no narrative purpose to the story. It’s just establishing that Nes & Cass were into each other and she wasn’t going to make it easy.

It also answered two questions for us that were hinted at: 1) Nes let Cass nuzzle her neck before she turned fae 2) she kicked him in the balls and that’s why he was so visibly upset around Feyre in training.

It also let us know that everyone knew Rhys & Feyre were madly in love with each other.

Is this important to the narrative? No. That’s why it was a bonus chapter. It’s intended to be something that sets up seeds that have already been planted so they can be further explored in the upcoming books. For instance, Azriel’s mysterious connection to Mor. His confirmed feelings for Elain, and her reciprocation of those feelings were all explored in the bonus chapter. The fact that G is a lightsinger and lures people, which will probably come into play in future books.

The necklace isn’t important because we’ll probably get a better gift later :p or SOMEONE will mention it, and casual readers will be like, “AZRIEL GOT ELAIN A NECKLACE WHAT”. In the same way a lot of us were like, “NES??? YOU LET CASS NUZZLE YOUR NECK ONCE WHATTTTTT WHENNNNNN”.

You don’t start or end a ship in a bonus chapter. Unless you’re literally insane and want to alienate the millions of people who read your writing and aren’t in fandom.

when authors write bonus chapters 90% of the time it’s because they have a contract with that specific retailer. sjm has/had a contract with bam, barnes and noble, target etc - meaning she has to write different bonus chapters for the retailer to help drive sales to those businesses. and in exchange i’d assume bloomsbury gets to put her book she’s releasing on their shelves for a discounted price. or there’s some other benefit as to why she has a contract with them - but no matter what they both benefit $ wise.
