Im reading 55 minutes for the first time and Wells said this
And because I've read stormbringer 5 times and just finished my second reread of Dark Era I immediately clocked that
Am I going insane? Why do they keep using the example of a skill user being able to deceive and tell the truth? Is Asagiri setting something up, am I over reading this, is it a reference to a past event?
The second example from 55 minutes sounds like Chuuya's original ability and Dazai. The second one from stormbringer is obviously Oda and Gide. Im not sure about the one from Dark Era. But I find it so interesting that the only one repeated is the the skill user who can deceive and reveal the truth. Considering that at least 2/3 of the other ones seem to reference people we already know this has been driving me nuts
this is a great observation!! I hadn't paid particular attention to the exact types of abilities mentioned in examples before now, and I think you make a great point.
I think this could be one of three things:
it's Asagiri's 'fall-back' explanation: the one he's deemed the most reliable. because singularities are most often discussed in the LNs- which, to be honest, some parts of the fandom aren't even aware of, and those who are won't necessarily read them all- it makes sense to use one simple example across every explanation. this way, someone who's only read 55 Minutes will have the exact same understanding as someone who's only read Dark Era: it's a consistency thing!
perhaps all of these characters are getting their knowledge from the same place. i.e., one person or entity explained to Wells, Ango, and Dazai (I assume it's Dazai, sorry, I can't remember who was speaking in that last screenshot) what a singularity is and how it works. it would make sense for them to go on and explain it the same way, but with slight variations, just like we see here. the question then becomes, who did that? maybe Natsume?
finally, maybe this is a hint for future abilities! the world of BSD feels infinite, which makes this impossible to rule out. so far, we don't really know anyone who has any of the abilities described... which is maybe the hidden fourth option: Asagiri chose these so that we, the audience, wouldn't immediately assign a character to this hypothetical.
tldr: I have no idea, but thinking about the potential implications of this is making my head spin. thank you for bringing it to my attention!! it's definitely something I'll keep an eye out for from now :>
