If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.

It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.

It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.

This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.

'media literacy' is a term that gets thrown around lately but one thing I learned recently that helps me a lot in detecting when people are using poor media literacy is that a sign of it is judging and treating characters as if they were real people and holding them to real life moral standards

characters can make you think about real life or represent things from real life, but are not real. they are characters. a story is like a little sandbox in which themes and characters can be explored and you can explore them in there but it's never real

I've also of course been thinking about this in relation to amazing digital circus, where people absolutely hate jax and hate people who like jax, saying things like "if you like jax you hate women", but that cannot be true. liking jax as a character says nothing about you like that

jax is an incredibly interesting and well done character study, I think, and, importantly, is not a real person.

the youtuber jackson fanelli put this really well about the ways people treat spongebob episodes, getting upset at things by thinking about them as if they happened in reality, like the famous "security system takes control of squidward's house" thing, which he goes over as like. while funny, it is bad media analysis. it's just judging the actions as if they were real instead of thinking about what the story is trying to say via those events

so now whenever I see this type of thought process, I call it "security system takes control of squidward's house" type analysis lol

This rhetoric seems uniquely American, not just because they're trying to make you think that people don't already have sex in toilets, but also that they think that toilets which are little rooms where you can't break in and grab people you think are having a nap on company time is a bad thing.

They obviously need to check your genitals as well, and you can't do that if there's wall in the way.

Never mind that you can unlock toilets from the outside generally if someone does an Elvis, and that the UK has had small little room toilets everywhere since indoor plumbing was invented, which means we have existing toilets older than the state of Israel.
