there r real teens out there who think discovering nirvana is a special achievement
isnt that kinda the whole point of buddhism
This post is slowly killing me
honestly imagine being mary shelley. its the fucking early 1800s. we’re barely out of the era when people thought women reading novels would lead to like debauchery and premarital sex. the weather is just fucking bonkers in yonkers. everybodys clothes looked like they oughta weigh two hundred pounds. everyones goth but goth isnt a thing yet so they dont even know it. your kids are dying. your husbands dead. your friends are all probably doing coke. your doctor is also both doing and maybe prescribing coke. no electricity. people are out there just staring into the void and having clandestine affairs in graveyards or some shit just because theres nothing else to do. and whats that? youve just written frankenstein. girl what the fuck even–
today is mary shelley’s birthday. honor her legacy by looking at the completely bonkers shit happening all around you and just saying well might as well fuck around and invent an entirely new literary genre
bring back homeric epithets. call people brave-hearted, swift-footed, laughter loving and loud thundering. view the world with its rosy fingered and saffron robed dawns, its wine dark seas. make your own, walk across kiln fired earth and moss soft as sea sponges. be dew-eyed and soft-cheeked and silver-souled, deft-fingered and bright-tongued. gaze up at the many-storied stars and feel the warmth of the ancient sun, father of gods and men, as it beats down on the shimmering world, soft spun like caterpillar silk
it IS a phase, mom
show me a permanent state of the self, mom
Impermanence does not mean insignificance, mom
The key to a happier life is being in a constant state of change and acceptance, mom
LET YOUR ART BE UGLY!!! LET YOUR WRITING BE BAD!!! DANCE OFFBEAT!!! SING OFF KEY!!! LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO LET YOUR FEAR OF NOT BEING GOOD ENOUGH PREVENT YOU FROM LEARNING AND ENJOYING NEW THINGS!!!
“I want something else. I’m not even sure what to call it anymore except I know it feels roomy and it’s drenched in sunlight and it’s weightless and I know it’s not cheap. Probably not even real.”
— Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves (via weltenwellen)
im not being funny but artistry will save your life. music, painting, pottery, writing, carving, weaving, the act of creating will save you.
“Death is the mother of beauty. Only the perishable can be beautiful, which is why we are unmoved by artificial flowers.”
— Wallace Stevens
when oscar wilde wrote “there are moments when one has to choose between living one’s own life, fully, entirely, completely-or dragging out some false, shallow, degrading existence that the world in its hypocrisy demands” i felt that
remember, ladies, before you say or do anything, to ask yourself: is this something that would get me diagnosed with female hysteria and locked in the attic by my relatives in the 19th and early 20th century? and if the answer is yes, proceed
i’m in the middle of writing my dissertation on the european witch trials and the more research i do into it the more it bothers me that the whole thing has become such a gimmick today, like the town i live in runs a nightly ‘ghost tour’ which ends on the hill where they hung 12 women for witchcraft in the mid 17th century. the reality is the witch trials were a crime against humanity, the victims were mostly children, widows and elderly women and some historians have estimated that the total number of people tortured and killed was upwards of half a million. it’s such a torrid chapter of human history but it’s viewed almost entirely as a joke outside of academic spheres and i think we all know the reason why
i think the greatest power we have as humans is the power to begin again. even if it’s 9:41 on a tuesday evening i can change my sheets and move my desk and brush my hair and fall asleep knowing that tomorrow i can wake up in new skin and be an entirely different girl if i so wish. at any time we can choose to change, radically perhaps or even just a little. it’s scary but it’s beautiful. if you aren’t happy with where you’re at, let it wash away and start again. burn it all down and start again.
