Those are 36-bit word addressed machines (as opposed to byte addressed which is more typical these days), where successive addresses reference successive words instead of bytes. It represents signed integers as ones' complement instead of two's complement, which means negating numbers is done via complementing every single bit, resulting in having separate positive and negative zeroes.
