The longest-running show in musical history is coming to the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour stage in a dazzling new production.

....Having played for 35 years on the West End, and 34 on Broadway, this inspired interpretation of Gaston Leroux’s novel remains one of the world’s favourite musicals. The story of a mysterious masked man who lives beneath the Paris Opera House, and the beautiful young singer who becomes his obsession and muse, seduces generation after generation and continues to enchant long-time devotees.

Two of Australia’s most in-demand theatrical talents, director Simon Phillips and designer Gabriela Tylesova, bring a whole new level of spectacle to the show’s defining moments — the mirror, the journey to the Phantom’s lair, the chandelier — on an enormous purposebuilt stage over the water.

So it looks like this might be a different production from the other Australian production and will be running March-April 2022. Simon Phillips and Gabriela Tylesova were the team behind Australia’s Love Never Dies, so should be interesting.

Hi Anea! I'm a History student and a ballet enthusiast, so I was thinking about the ballet La Sylphide and how the ballerinas in Il Muto are called the 'sylphs', but their costumes don't seem inspired by the real La Sylphide? What do you think was the concept for these costumes and scene overall?

That is a good question. The ballet of the mock opera “Il Muto”  is specifically referred to as “Dance of the Country Nymphs” in the libretto, and the ballerinas are referred to as Sylvan Glades. All of this can be loosely translate to young pastoral girls seen in the small tree-less opening in the forest. So they are not as such related to the ballet “La Sylphide” from 1832/1836.

The costumes is in the vein of the rest of “Il Muto” - a Victorian take on the Rococo era. But to add to the fun, they are also loosely inspired by antiquity, seen in the set’s temple in the background, and in the ornate wigs. A classical pastoral scene, with a Rococo touch, in other words. You basically take something like this:

And mix it with something like this:

...and what you get is this:

What this DOES have in common with the ballet “La Sylphide”, however, is the style today called romantic ballet. The romantic tutus, which were considered short by early Victorian standard, but much longer than today’s plate-like tutus. And also the rapid leg-work, tilted torsos and front-facing dance style choreographer Gillian Lynne explained was important to her. She wanted a touch of historical French ballet style, before the enlonged and exaggerated lines of Russian ballet. And this style partly originated with “La Sylphide”. It was here pointe leg work was properly introduced as a part of the choreography, and to show this off skirts were shortened.

So there are some overlapping parts of the Il Muto ballet and “La Sylphide”, in terms of stylistic choices. But it was not the main inspiration for the mock ballet, as far as I can tell :)

Oh, I think I confounded “nymphs” with “sylphs”, my bad 😂😂

But one reference I think I was able to catch is the presence of flower arcs in the choreography. They really remind me of the first act waltz from The Sleeping Beauty - though that’s originality a Russian ballet, but I bet flower arcs could have been worn in previous ballets and I’m just not aware of it.
