waste my time
i wish i could just stop overthinking.
i’m sick of wasting my time and i’ve already done enough of that this summer. so many firsts and while i’m learning from them i just can’t stop feeling a million different emotions and i just want to turn it off--i can’t wait till it’s time for me to put thousands of miles between me and my problems again. 44 days.
i wish i had never met him. i wish i’d never let him convince me that i meant more to him than i did.
i wish he knew what happened that day was something that i don’t usually let happen. i can’t believe i let him, a total stranger, in like that, talked to him like i knew him forever when i was meeting him for the first time. i wonder if he thinks this is just what i do, go on dates with boys i just met and fool myself into thinking there’s something more than a fling. i can’t believe i kissed him.
i still can’t stop thinking about him, not because i keep hoping there’s some chance he’ll leave her, some chance he’ll come back to me. it’s because i can’t stop thinking about how stupid i was to trust a boy i’d just met. who was i that day?? it usually takes forever for me to let a new person in, let alone a boy, and yet something happened in my head that took over. i was so desperate for the fantasy of affection and romance that i let myself not be myself.
i want to cut him out completely. i never want to see his face again or see his name again, not in person, not in social media notifications, nothing, i just want to forget he ever existed until one day when someone asks me who my first kiss was i can say “i honestly don’t remember the guy’s name.” but i know me, and i know i just don’t forget these types of things as hard as i try--because, you know, i overthink. and here i am, typing this out, overthinking.
he seemed so sweet and genuine at first, and now i wonder if he has any semblance of a conscience about how he hurt me. i know he knew i had so many doubts from the start, and he worked to patch them up so well. and right when i was starting to get over my doubts, that’s exactly when he seized the opportunity. why didn’t i just follow my own conscience telling me to stop?
i remember when he ever so kindly told me that he had already moved on. lmfao. he didn’t “move on” from anything, because there was nothing real between us in the first place.
you want to know why it’s taking me longer to move on than you, a? it’s because at the time, you were my first choice, you were my only choice. it was just you i was thinking about. but i didn’t know the whole time i was a second choice for you. “you were never a rebound” my ass. now i have every right to be bitter about you, and pathetic about me (or whoever i was that afternoon in may).
i hope you’re having the best time with your real girlfriend. i hope i really helped you out, letting you try out all these ~smooth lines~ on me first before you used them on her exactly one week later to win her over, just like you did me. i hope our romcom movie picnic date was a nice lil trial run for you, warming you up for the real thing when you decided to go on a picnic date at the same park exactly one month later with her. (i wish i was lying about these things, but i’m not. lmao. what kind of fucked up calendar is this?)
all the while the girl you used at the start of the summer is still fighting every day to stay the positive, hopeful girl she’s always been, trying to believe maybe there is some sort of happy ending for her out there too, but it’s hard to believe that when she gets excited that another kinda cute boy messages her on snapchat, but the excitement fades when he suddenly makes a crude comment about just wanting to get into her pants. it’s hard to believe that when the boy she liked all during the school year barely even remembers her name, hit on all of her friends, then wrote a song about a girl that was much skinner and prettier than her--of course he wouldn’t give her a second glance, and she knows it, but she still kind of wishes it was her that he wrote a song about.
maybe i’m just wasting my time being a romantic. i’m trying to work on getting more confident by taking more pictures and fooling myself into thinking i’m anywhere remotely beautiful as a model, i’m trying to work on being fitter and healthier for my own peace of mind so i can stop feeling so gross in my own body-- i’m just trying to improve myself for myself and no one else anymore.
why it hurts
i’m readjusting to life without him again.
i mean, he wasn’t in my life for that long, i keep telling myself. my world kept spinning without him in it before, so that’s what it’s going to keep doing now.
i want to believe that it’s possible to separate the memory from the person, because even though he’s out of my life now, it feels like a waste to convince myself to forget the perfect day we spent together.
i’ve always been a romantic, and on may 22nd, i finally had it. the sun. the flowers. lying in the grass, my head on his chest. kissing my forehead, my neck, my face. tracing the lines on his hands with my fingertips. laughing about nothing; holding hands down the street.
i remember when we missed his bus by a minute. i parked right outside the capitol. the sun was setting, and i’d told him many times before how much my heart ached for beautiful sunsets. this one was like red and purple watercolors in the sky, and he was there with me watching it in the passenger seat, and as i kept watching the sky and let myself sit with all the warmth of a new summer romance i felt his eyes on me. and he tilted my head and kissed me again.
i think i deserve to keep that memory, even if now everything’s changed. even if it only was real and tangible for one perfect day. even though i think he loves someone else now, and well, he’s probably loved her the whole time, even when he was holding my face in his hands, looking me in the eyes and telling me i was perfect.
but i can’t keep tormenting myself over him. maybe one day i’ll be able to bring back that memory and not feel that tinge of regret and sadness, and just remember that one summer day when i was nineteen, i had my first kiss--and it lived up to movie expectations and everything.
it just didn’t last.
he messaged me this morning; i ignored it. i tried to go thru the whole day like normal--exactly how my life was before i had felt what it had been like to be loved like that. i resisted the urge to snapchat him when i saw sunflowers at the grocery store; i thought about how he was nominated for something today, but i decided against asking him how it went.
there was a part of me that still wanted to know how he was doing, even though i knew i shouldn’t. i can’t stop thinking about how he told me i wasn’t going to be worth the distance. my heart breaks a little every time.
it doesn’t even hurt that bad because of him specifically, i think. i don’t hate him for how it ended. it’s just that this was my first real shot at something and it ended so quickly... and exactly the way i had predicted from the start how it would. and that’s what hurts. because i don’t know if i’m ever going to find someone who thinks i’m worth the distance. maybe it’s all just the start of a pattern of meaningless semi-relationships where it’s all fun and games until i catch feelings right when they’re ready to back out.
because i’m full of complications and miles and miles in between and who wants a girl who moves around so much she doesn’t know where home is? who comes and goes so much that she doesn’t know what constancy is? odds are, there’s going to be another girl (another prediction of mine that fulfilled itself here) who’s less complicated than that, who can give more to him than i could. i can’t blame him for wanting more.
i just need to learn to let go. start looking at every day forward as a clean slate. maybe i need to do some forgiving myself too.
we’ll see how it goes.
wilted sunflowers
it was funny, because i actually already had a post about him saved in my drafts that i started earlier today.
but now i need to write a new one.
dear A,
we barely knew each other when we decided that we were going to be each other’s first love. we fell fast, you i think, faster than me, because isn’t it true how boys fall first?
i knew we were going too fast and i told you, many times. i said, “i don’t think we’re doing this right.” you said, “does it matter?” you said, “does it matter?” so many times that i began to believe that maybe it didn’t matter at all.
i thought i felt sure of myself, because in the beginning, it sure felt real. the way we messaged each other until 4am, telling stories about our lives. the way we video called each other from across the country. the way you fawned over the sound of my voice. you called me perfect and i wanted to believe it.
when we met it was like a fairy tale. i never usually drive far, but that day, for you, i fearlessly took on the freeway and accidentally drove too far when i missed my exit, because i was so distracted by my excitement to see you, and touch you in person, to know it was real.
i remember pulling up my car (illegally) in a taxi only zone. i got out. it was sweltering hot, 100 degrees. i leaned up against my car and looked both ways down the street to find you until i saw you, and you saw me, and you went running--you threw your cute little skateboard down and it rolled almost into traffic, but you didn’t care, you hugged me so tightly and that was when i thought: this is what it physically feels like to be loved by someone else.
we got into the car and i was so excited that i made the wrong turn several times and got us lost, but eventually we made it to midtown, and we ordered poke bowls and took them to go. you just happened to know the girl behind the counter and when you introduced us, you called me “your girl.” i’d never heard that before. my heart did a flip.
i brought a blanket. we didn’t want to do something basic, like watch a movie--we were bona fide saps. i drove us to the park where i had taken junior prom pictures in, set down my blanket in the soft green grass in the shade. the whole time, i waited for you to kiss me. and you did.
i’d never been kissed before; neither had you. i thought our shared inexperience was kind of cute. we were laying on my blanket looking up at the trees sway and it was so peaceful, and we had my playlist on and there was a song from begin again playing quietly, and you just leaned in and did it. it was awkward at first--i couldn’t figure out how to move my head so our noses didn’t get in the way.
but we figured it out.
i never thought i’d ever, ever be that girl who kisses on the first date. but there i was somehow, full-on making out with a boy i’d just met, in a children’s park at around 5 in the evening on a warm summer monday. i also never thought i’d ever hit a rebellious stage, lying to my parents about where i was and who i was with. maybe that should have been a red flag about us, too.
in a way, i think we both used each other a little. i think we both felt steps behind in the game and we wanted to prove ourselves. we both wanted that feeling of being loved and being kissed for the first time and a magical summer romance like the one we’d seen in movies.
i knew we’d burn out just as quickly as we’d started- i knew it from the start. and yet i still let myself fall into it.
but it’s interesting that we were each others’ first kiss. because no matter how many years pass, we’re going to remember each other. tonight i told you that i was sorry that i only ended up to be a random summer makeout for you, but i guess i can’t hold you entirely accountable for that, because that’s probably how i’m going to remember you in the future too.
so many things went wrong today but in spite of it all i still want to believe that love is out there and it’s possible for me. it just wasn’t with you. and i don’t hate you for that. it’s just time and distance and i guess it’s probably written somewhere in the stars or by the hands of god or something-- we can’t help our end.
i’ll give you this, you did teach me a lot about myself. a lot of flaws about myself too. commitment scares me, trust is important. in a moment i can let myself be blinded by the illusion of something tangible and in the next moment i can harden. i can flip the switch from idealistic romantic to bleak cynic.
you say we can still stay friends, i say we’ll see. summer is long and it’s day sixteen, two hours in and i’m already fighting the urge to miss you.
i’ll be okay.
