Bruce couldn't help but wonder what his life would be like if Death-Cast had been a thing back when he was a child. Surely they wouldn't have gone to the theatre; he wouldn't have had to watch his parents get murdered, and Batman wouldn't exist. Or maybe it would. Maybe his parents would have tried to live the day as usual, making the most of the time they had together, or maybe they would have been murdered right there in their home, or in plain sight in the middle of a busy street. But would knowing they were going to die have softened the impact? Perhaps they wouldn't have even told him.
Alfred didn't tell him, for obvious reasons. He had no means to contact him, and he had planned his own death; the call directed to him in the early morning only proved that his scheme would work. Still, if somehow Bruce had known, Damian wouldn't have been the one to infiltrate the Batcave.
Bruce came to hate Death-Cast some years into his vigilante career. So what if he wasn't going to die in the next 24–21 hours? He could very well still die at the 25th hour and never know if they didn't call on time.
They didn't call him on time for Jason.
Still, as soon as the clock hit midnight, dread would settle in his stomach and wouldn't leave until it was well past three. He would never admit that, of course, and with his vigilante activities, some days those three hours passed almost unnoticed.
