This is an interesting thing because most people don’t know what a smile actually entails. Most animals that are capable of expressing emotions do it with their eyes, ears, and body language. But we get told a smile is something you do with your mouth, which is wrong.

If somebody smiles at you with only their mouth, they are lying through their teeth. Genuine smiles always involve the eyes.

YESSSS.  Duchenne smiles happen spontaneously due to joy or amusement, and they involve the eye-wrinkly thing like andalites are described as doing.  Non-Duchenne smiles are the kind we do to be polite, to be photographed, to create a smile outside of amusement/joy — it’s not necessarily lying, but usually about trying to smile on command.

There’s also a FASCINATING cultural discrepancy wherein people from more individualistic cultures (U.S., Australia, Germany, South Africa, etc.) look more at the mouth to detect smiles, whereas people from more collectivistic cultures (Japan, Venezuela, Kenya, India, etc.) look more at the eyes.  So the idea of “smile is something you do with your mouth” is way more common in the U.S. than, say, South Korea.

heres something i've been thinking about for a while:

terezi KNEW karkat's blood color from the moment she saw his sign, maybe even sooner.

think about it, she was deeply invested in alternian history. she and vriska found their ancestors- knew about them well enough to base their personalities around them and roleplay them in-depth, with historically accurate costumes at that. it's even implied that terezi even got her quirk from redglare the way vriska did with mindfang, since she doesn't even know the significance of the numbers she uses; which, in turn, implies that she found at least one thing written by redglare herself. they probably read everything they could find looking for information about their ancestors.

redglare is seen wearing the cancer symbol, which shows two things: she's a follower of the signless, and she's not afraid to show it. anything written by her is sure to hint towards a deeper history, if not outright stating her devotion to the sufferer's ideals, and there's no way terezi wouldn't pick up on it. vriska may be content with knowing about mindfang's life and stop there, but terezi would go further. terezi thrives on learning people's motivations, what makes them tick, what drives them on a deeper level. that's literally her defining character trait as a seer of mind. do you expect her to know nothing about the troll who drives so many of her ancestor's thoughts and values? one who was a prominent historical figure, even if that history has been covered up by authority? if anything, the fact there was a cover-up would just motivate terezi further to discover the truth.

no, terezi absolutely knows who the signless is. she follows his teachings, even if those values are hidden beneath her facade of legislaceration and general terezi-ness. she wants to help people. she craves actual justice, not just whatever passes for it in an alternian court.

and throughout alternian history, the cancer symbol was used as a sign of rebellion. but only ONE troll in history has ever had it as a given sign, and that's karkat "ancestors are bullshit" vantas. terezi knew who he was the moment she met him, even if he didn't himself.

(there's a lot more to be written about how this influences basically every aspect of karkat and terezi's dynamic and their relationship, but that deserves its own post and not to be hidden under 5 paragraphs of rambling that no one will read. also im tired of writing)

You know what’s more fun than worldbuilding that makes some fantasy races EEEEVIIIIIIILLLLL!!!!? Worldbuilding that gives the different races cultural differences that help explain why there’s a lot of conflict between them:

Goblin culture doesn’t have a concept of “Property”. A stick on the ground and a tool in a locked shed are equally up for grabs if a thing needs doing. They casually take and leave things all over their communities, eat from communal pots, and genuinely Do Not Understand why the Core Races are so Angry and prone to Violence all the time.

Consequently Goblins who live near Core communities develop a reputation as “Thieves” despite not even having a *word* for that. (The closest word they have is more like “Greedy” and it means a person that hides things so nobody else can use them, and it’s a surefire fight-starter to call a Goblin that)

Common Orc Spiritual beliefs hold that a Soul can only grow stronger by overcoming Challenges in life, and see intruding on another person’s Challenge unasked for as not just Rude, but Deeply Harmful. You’re Stealing their chance to Grow. Asking for help is deeply personal and doing so can be both a way to grow closer with them or a too-personal intrusion, depending on your existing relationship with them. An exception is Children, as far as most Orcs are concerned, all Children are fundamentally the responsibility of the Whole Community, regardless of whose child they are, or even if said child is an Orc at *all*.

This means that Orcs who live near Core neighbors often seem Rude and Standoffish if not outright hostile, because they neither ask for nor offer aid even in times of trouble, and respond to unasked for aid themselves with Anger. There are even rumors that they Steal Children, because if an Orc finds a child lost in the woods they’re pretty much immediately going to start feeding it, and if they can’t find where to bring it back to, or it doesn’t seem to be well cared for, they’re just gonna keep it.

Going more off Kendra's post and also what's been said before, it really also is such a disservice to Hozier's work to constantly shove it into this weird niche of like "woodland creature" bullshit y'all keep insisting it is. Hozier is a really good example of what I call an artist's artist.

He's somebody who does an outstanding job of channeling his influences into something all his own whilst also being so considerate and respectful of those who came before him. He understands the importance of giving other artists their credit and what their positions in society means on a larger scale because of their work. That's probably why he is so respected by elders in the industry like Mavis Staples.

Its also the reason alot of poc (specially black fans) admire and enjoy his work, because he's a good example of what it means to be influenced by the contributions of poc whilst publicly acknowledging AND giving credit as a white person in a manner which is both humble and genuine. This is why a lot of his fans of color find it SO irritating that y'all dismiss the root of where his music is really coming from just to be quirky and label it "fae" shit, cause it's not. Especially since he's CONSTANTLY talking about those influences.

Blues and folk music in both America and Ireland share a common bond in that they're rooted in giving a voice to the struggles, experiences, resilience, and enduring spirit of two communities who've experienced what it means to be disenfranchised by the powers that be, and you can very much hear that in Hozier's work especially as of late. His music is a really wonderful reflection of his experiences through the lense of his own culture, and the kinship he's found in the beauty of Blues.

Tail Pulling is a behavior noted in many corvids. The practical application is to create a distraction that will allow the birb to make off with the target’s food. Imagine being in the lunch room and a large fellow has a Twinkie you covet. You can’t just take it from him because he’ll defend his Twinkie. But if you thwap him on the back of his neck and then dash around to snag the Twinkie while he investigates, you stand a decent chance of enjoying spongey goodness. This is basically that in birb form.

Except corvids don’t only do this as a distraction. Sometimes they seem to just being doing it to mess with other animals/birbs. But to use my lunch room analogy, there are times you might thwap someone sneakily on the back of the neck just for amusement. Primates exhibit behavior that appears to be just be annoying other animals for amusement. Given how intelligent crows are, its not unlikely that this is a manifestation of an innate desire to just fuck with someone else for the fun of it. Such as this from the link above:

Sorry to hijack a little, but to put it bluntly, corvids are also pretty BALSY. They are more than prepared to harass other huge birds of prey which could deal them a lot of damage. There’s plenty of cases of corvids ‘riding’ other birds as well. It’s often to harass the larger bird out of the area, but as @red3blog said, they quite often (in layman’s terms) enjoy fucking shit up for fun.

It feels like I’ve talked about this before, but to me the funniest version of Portal is if Chell is deaf.

Like, most of the major story beats, at least the ones that directly affect her, have a prominent visual component so she’s following along with the basics. But she has no idea who cave johnson is, or what wheatley was trying to explain to her, and she certainly wasn’t hurt by any of glados’ insults.

but the best part of this headcanon is imagining glados checking chell’s personnel file years down the line, noticing the word “deaf” for the first time, and just going “WHAT???”
