Its because fighter fighters sign up/are trained to save people in real need and danger, the American police are apparently not. Running into flaming buildings, cutting people out of wrecked cars, its a job that is 100% percent about helping others in the wake of non-human danger elements (fire, being stuck in something, disaster debris etc). The core principles of a fire fighter are preservation of life because thats the fundemental nature of their job.

The alarming number of power hungry psychos who pervade the American police force arent also seen in the fire brigade because theres no one to excercise power over, theres no outlet for their abusive personalities. Cant pull a gun on an inferno, cant pepper spray a cat in a tree, cant shoot a car wreck for daring to trap its occupant. They (the psychos) dont go into their job for preservation of life, they go into it to excercise force and authority over another human being, morality，decency and legality be damned.
