disco elysium is one of the best examples imo of how massive a gap can exist between a piece of media and the conversations around it. if you’ve never played it i think you’d be forgiven for thinking its some sort of fun gay buddy cop romp from how ppl present the story online

i still can’t get over the choice the developers made to give harry amnesia at the start. which is par for the course for rpgs ofc but instead of building him into something from a blank slate like you would in other rpgs you have to gradually uncover what a monumentally creepy violent fascistic pathetic piece of shit he is. and at every turn you have to contend with the fact that the public sees him and knows him as he “was” instead of how you might want to play him. and the game tells you outright that what breaks harry psychologically isn’t even the violence he enacts as an arm of the state its the dissolution of his relationship (these things are not disconnected sure but the brutality of his role as a cop is not the catalyst for his breakdown). its not about guilt or remorse for what he’s done, it’s up to you whether you feel guilty or remorseful on his behalf. also its just so ballsy to make a game about never giving up fighting for a more just world for everyone and your entry point is You Are A Cop And Everyone Here Rightfully Detests You. And You Didn’t Give A Shit About That A Day Ago. and even if you choose to give a shit about it now (if) it doesn’t mean all is forgiven it doesn’t mean you get to feel good about yourself. you’re still a cop. and if you want to pretend to be a Radical Communist Cop go ahead but we’ll take the piss out of you for it. man its such a good game

#disco elysium #the thing that first drew me to DE way back when it first game out is someone's take on it saying #“you're desperately fighting the main character to be slightly less awful at all times. there's no options to be normal or likeable”#“the character you are playing is inherently just an incredibly offputting weirdo”#and any fan content that doesn't reflect this does not hit. like have fun guys but #if you are writing harry as a guy you would be comfortable being alone in an elevator with you're off the mark. he would not not say that #'that' here being: the most offputting thing you can imagine #i need to replay i haven't since before the directors cut i know im missing out on so much smh....#also obviously the game is also very funny and has good character dynamics and relationship building but like. idk #is the character dynamics not more fun when u accurately identify the characters? i may be thinking too much of fandom in general there

Last night’s debate (which Biden failed, spectacularly) may prove to be one of the most pivotal in history. I can’t actually believe I get to say this, but it looks like the Democratic Party might be considering replacing their presidential candidate—with only a little over 4 months left to go till November 5th.

I can’t understate how significant this moment is. Leftists should keep in mind that the time to strike is always when your opponent is weak. We could have a huge impact on shifting the party to the left if we can manage to convince our senators that they have a better chance of being reelected under a more progressive candidate.

In all likelihood, Joe isn’t going to go willingly. So now is the time to put pressure on your democratic senators and elected officials. Tell them (even if it’s a lie) that you refuse to vote on the Democratic ticket when the presidential candidate is a senile old moderate who doesn’t share your values and actively funds genocide. Tell them we want someone who can actually stand for something instead of just eclipsing Donald Trump. Tell them we don’t want another Genocide Joe!

i had a dream that time travel was invented and too many people choose to travel back in time to save the titanic from sinking (the question of whether unsinking of the titanic deserved so much attention in the face of human history was the subject of both heavy academic and online discourse), which caused a rift in the space-time-continuum that led to the titanic showing up indiscriminately all over the world’s oceans and sea in various states of sinking.

this caused a lot of issues both in terms of fixing said space-time-continuum and in terms of nautical navigation, and after a long and heavy battle in the international maritime organization it was decided that the bureaucratic burden of dealing with this was to be upon Ireland, much to their dismay. the Irish Government then released an app for all sailors and seafarers so they could report titanic sightings during their journeys, even though they heavily dissuaded you from reporting them given the paperwork it caused.

anyway i woke up with a clear image of the app in my head and needed to recreate it for all of you:

if I can use my minimal social clout to urge people on here to do anything at all, please go out of your way to spend time with unfamiliar kinds of people. nothing has enriched my life more than going places where I literally don't know a single person, and just getting into a conversation with no expectations. talk to old people. talk to new neighbours. talk to shopkeepers. talk to people at the bus stop. it will make you a better person 100%. and maybe it will stop you posting like that. no guarantees.
