I sing of Artemis, whose shafts are of gold, who cheers on the hounds, the pure maiden, shooter of stags, who delights in archery, own sister to Apollo with the golden sword. Over the shadowy hills and windy peaks she draws her golden bow, rejoicing in the chase, and sends out grievous shafts. The tops of the high mountains tremble and the tangled wood echoes awesomely with the outcry of beasts: earth quakes and the sea also where fishes shoal. But the goddess with a bold heart turns every way destroying the race of wild beasts: and when she is satisfied and has cheered her heart, this huntress who delights in arrows slackens her supple bow and goes to the great house of her dear brother Phoebus Apollo, to the rich land of Delphi, there to order the lovely dance of the Muses and Graces. There she hangs up her curved bow and her arrows, and heads and leads the dances, gracefully arrayed, while all they utter their heavenly voice, singing how neat-ankled Leto bare children supreme among the immortals both in thought and in deed.

for me, the most moving parts of the iliad are the descriptions of the minor characters killed by the heroes. a name mentioned just once, a short description of their whole life - how their parents loved them, or how they had lots of friends, or a big house, or were good at hunting - a whole life condensed into one sentence. like out of all the lines that made me cry in the iliad, most of them were lines like this. i can't remember the exact quotes, but the two that come to mind are the one about the man who lived in a big house by the road and had lots of friends who always came over for parties, but none of his friends came to save him from death, and the two young men who were their father's only children, and since how they both died together their father's estate had to be divided up among distant relatives. these people are not kings or heroes, they get killed in a hero's aresteia, we don't need to know a name or a backstory, but we're provided with them anyway. idk man something about how war can strip people of their humanity and the only glimpse we get of their lives is a memory as they lay dying. something about how these men had just as much of a complicated life as any of the heroes
