phrases like “you don’t owe anyone anything” and “relationships aren’t transactional” have the power to be used in ways that are very backwards and harmful

for example, no you don’t owe anyone anything in that if some creep is trying to get with you, you can block him without feeling bad. you don’t owe kindness to people who are transphobic or racist or bigoted.

but, you can’t use this as an excuse to fuck over people who have helped you. “you don’t owe anyone anything” isn’t an excuse to allow yourself to forget compassion and basic empathy, it isn’t an excuse for you to be an asshole just because you find it easier to be one

relationships aren’t transactional in that if your partner does something nice for you, you are indebted to them. they do these things because they love you; it is their choice to express love through these gestures

but they are transactional in that you both actively need to be putting time and care into the relationship. ignoring the dynamic of one person caring too much (and putting in excessive (emotional an literal) work and labor) while the other does nothing isn’t healthy. one person can’t solely take and the other person can’t solely give- that’s dangerous, and you can’t put the bandaid of “this isn’t transactional” over a relationship that is draining you in all capacities

i’m tired of seeing these things being misconstrued and used as an excuse to hurt people, while framing it as a way of taking care of yourself

I haven’t been on tumblr for quite as long as a lot of people but over several years I’ve noticed this interesting gradual sorta,, shift in the general culture? that it went from this mostly depressed, nihilistic outlook where people would regularly joke about hating themselves and being hopeless and depressed, to a wave of vehemence of “STOP hating everything actually the world is Good and you deserve love!!!” type posts, to now, where those aggressive ‘PSAs’ have faded away and instead I regularly see people romanticizing simple things like stars and hot tea and rainy mornings, and waxing poetic about their friends, and just trying to put love out there. and I don’t know exactly what that means (someone who knows more than me could probably say something smart about generational expression and trauma or popular perception of mental health and whatnot), but I do know that it makes my heart very full to see people learn to love the world and themselves by extension, and a whole userbase adopting healthier coping mechanisms, and therefore teaching the younger users to do so as well. I might just be following different people, but I really do think we’ve grown. everyone has grown. five years ago it wasn’t unusual for the next post on my dash to be a scathing commentary on why nothing matters or an anon ripping into someone they barely knew or someone complaining about how pathetic their interests are. now I have mutuals who get excited and spam reblog art of cows and friends I see tagging each other in pictures of frogs and strangers writing paragraphs about how much I matter. it makes me happy. idk. just an observation I wanted to make. I think people are good and everyone’s just trying their best at the end of the day

Okay but if you have an extensive CD collection you need to back it up into digital/new CDs!

And it's not about apps or digital being faster, I'm all up for physical media, but commercially produced CDs from the 90s and early 2000s are reaching the end of their functional lifespan*, and are starting to fail.

If you have a lot of CDs, it would be a good idea to rip them into high fidelity digital audio, to preserve them.

*CD/DVD lifespans are tricky. Some estimates in peak, perfect conditions and maintenance go for almost 200 years. Others calculate between 20 to 30 years in "normal" use, though no one can agree what normal is.

I recommend buying a cheap DVD reader/writer unit -I bought mine for less than 20 USD - and then batch ripping stuff. Surprisingly Windows Media Player works out of the box, just make sure to save things in the correct format (mp3 or MP4) so you're not limited in playback.

You can of course find more robust options online, including VLC, to rip your files. Ripping a CD will not damage it or prevent it from working, it'll just make sure you have the option to burn a new one if your original happens to fail. This is 100% legal and ethical (and would be ethical still even if illegal, because piracy is always ethical in late stage capitalism and corporations are not your friends.)

I recommend redundancy for your backups (remember that time Apple fucked up with people's files by replacing them with itunes shit? Yeah) and if you're really techy, set up a NAS by your router, with your backups.

If your rips are high quality you can feed it to your computer/tablet/phone/any device in your network and always have access to CD quality audio no matter where you are.

if you are saving digital audio for long term use make sure to use a lossless file type like .WAV

yes it’s a lot larger of a file but it won’t degrade over time

you can use .mp3 files for daily/casual use on a playback device but they won’t keep their quality as they get compressed

As someone who's had both outside and i side cats depending on the area I lived in:

People need to learn that not everyone lives in a car nation. A lot of us live in smaller villages/suburbs. No wild animal will get them.

City people have inside cats, obviously, for obvious reasons. Those shouldn't be let outside.

But for some reason people act as if the entire world looks like LA in terms of cars and Australia in terms of dangerous wildlife that can attack your cat.

Cool. And people are allowed to have different opinions as not everyone lives in area's that are risky for cats. Farm cats and village cats just aren't at high enough risks to deny them their natural want to be outside.

Currently have an inside cat. She has no desire to go outside and even if she had, she couldn't.

Not everyone lives in the USA or USA jr (the uk) so having places set up that arent car focussed or have risks in nature (coyotes, wolfs etc.) That could harm their cat.

There is nowhere in the world that is 100% safe for cats to free roam. Cars are not the only thing they are at risk from. Domestic cats are also invasive in every single country and cause massive amounts of damage to native wildlife. There is nowhere in the world where cats can free roam without causing problems.

*This* is why I always say it's stupid how people always make the outdoor cat argument about the safety of the cat. Outdoor cat people get to feel like they have the high ground when they live in a "safe" area if everyone always focuses on the "lol your cat's gonna get eaten by coyotes/run over by a car" part and not the "cats are an invasive species almost everywhere in the world and outdoor cats have driven several bird species around the world to extinction" part.

I also feel the need to point out as always that letting your cats outside is a great way for them to contract FIV by fighting other cats. Unless you already have an FIV positive cat on your home, there’s no way for your cat to get FIV unless you let them outside

oh another fun buddhism thing, bugs are in a kind of purgatory, where it's very difficult to accrue enough karma to reincarnate out of the bug realm, so when you see a bug you're supposed to say a prayer for it to help it gain karma. also, i say a lot of prayers for my cats, because they are so selfish and badly behaved that i'm almost certain they're going to be reincarnated as dust mites or something.
