So, 2005 was an awesome year for me. I go back as much as I can.
*note: not all events happened in 05', i just feel like that year encapsulates me/my generation!* ** disclaimer: I luv Jamie Lynn Spears**
Jessie J - Ain’t Been Done
Jessica Allen Cornish, also known as Jessie J, is not only one of my favorite artists, but possibly the most underrated superstar within the last decade. Jessie’s first American hit was “Party in the USA” , written by her and performed by Miley Cyrus. On her own, she scored one of 2011’s biggest hits, “Price Tag” featuring B.o.B, and blew us all away again in 2012 with “Domino”. I say Jessie is underrated and unappreciated in America because when you think of divas, people like Beyonce, Rihanna, and maybe Ariana Grande come across your mind, not Jessie. I’m telling you now, none of those women are on the level of Jessie J. I’ve never seen a female perform the way she does, ever. She doesn’t have backup dancers, it’s just her and the music. She’s a fireball, take a look here. Her voice is on another level compared to anyone making music right now. Not only is her range crazy, she’s super soulful and does mesmerizing things with her unique voice (watch her acoustic performance of Bang Bang here). Jessie is gearing up for the release of her third album, Sweet Talker. “Bang Bang” was the first single and yet another new track off of the album called “Ain’t Been Done” was released today. It’s melodically complex and I love the all over the place-ness of it. Check out Jessie J’s new anthem, “Ain’t Been Done” above!
Amazing! Hilary Duff is simply a queen re assuming her throne. This song and video makes me soooooo happy. Love love !
Jesse McCartney - The Other Guy
WOW! I am blown away by Jesse's new song off of his upcoming album, In Technicolor. The song is called "The Other Guy" and it is a ballad in every sense of the word. Just a piano and Jesse's amazing voice. Last year I saw Jesse in concert when he opened up for the Backstreet Boys (I even got to take a picture with him!) Yes, he sang his old classics, but he also sang some new music including his new single at the time, "Back Together", which had a retro throwback vibe. Jesse made it clear that this was the new direction of music and while it was unexpected, as a fan I can say that the transition was seamless. This is mostly because the music is SO. GOOD. A couple of months ago, Jesse released another jam called "Superbad", which was very funky and 70s and cool. Loved it.
This new song shows Jesse's range and musical ability. I don't think there's one critic who wouldn't take him seriously after hearing "The Other Guy". This is why he's had the same fans for over ten years; not just because we're loyal, but because he puts out quality stuff. I am SO ready for In Technicolor!
Wrabel - Sideways (EP)
Review:Â
OK..Who is this guy? Like I really didn't know who Wrabel was until last night around 1 a.m. Thankfully he's featured in iTunes' new music section. After some googling, I realized that Wrabel is the singer and writer behind Afrojack's Ten Feet Tall! I am actually loving Wrabel's new EP more than his hit with Afrojack. The four song EP is under the Pop genre in iTunes, but its much more than that! Wrabel's EP, Sideways, sounds more of a coldplay-ish pop soul electro mix reminiscent of Disclosure's "Latch". I can't get enough of this guy's voice! Above you'll find the title track of the EP, "Sideways". At first you may think that you're getting some sort of ballad, but around the 1 minute mark, the awesome,  jump-inducing beat kicks in! Watch out for Wrabel and Download his new EP on iTunes!
Ed Sheeran - X (album review)Â
Review:Â
Ed sheeran basically toured / released songs from / won grammys for the same album, his debut album "+" for over two years. That's how good it was. So with that being said, I expected nothing less than great from Ed with his new album "X". Multiply is just as fantastic as +, maybe even better! Here are some standouts from the album:Â
One: A quite simple and beautiful love song. The chorus is the best. The song is just so quiet and natural.Â
I'm A Mess (listen above) : One of my favorites off of the album and I believe it's also Ed's new single. Really honest and has that signature Ed sound.Â
Tenerife Sea: This song is gorgeous! Ed is really good at writing simple love songs. This song sounds just like 'I'm With You' by Avril Lavigne, which is also one of my faves!
Take It Back: Ed is LEGITAMELY rapping! I was blown away when I heard this!Â
Other songs I really liked are "Bloodstream", "Shirtsleeves" and "Even My Dad Does Sometimes". One thing I will say is that "Dont", "Nina", and "The Man" all sound the same! However, "Don't" is still one of the best on the album! Congratulations are in order for Ed! X cements his status as a rare star in the music galaxy!
Lupe Fiasco - Next To It (feat. Ty Dolla Sign)
Review:Â
This is certainly a bit of a departure for Lupe Fiasco! I don't exactly listen to Lupe other than his big, inescapeable singles that we all love, but this still feels like something new coming from him. It can definitely compete with the rap songs of 2014. It has a really good beat that uses a brass sounding instument, which seems to be the new trend in music today. Ty Dolla $ign is also great on this; his voice is like a mix of Trey Songs and R. Kelly. This is super catchy and I'm excited for what else Lupe has in store for us!
Maroon 5 - Maps
Review: Â
The boys of Maroon5 have just released the first single off of their upcoming album. “Maps” is very…Maroon5-y. As it should be, since they are Maroon5. The band is definitely going forward in that new direction they showcased on their last record, Overexposed. When I heard that Ryan Tedder did some writing on this track, it didn’t surprise me because "Maps" lies in that “Counting Stars” region. That opening guitar riff instantly reminded me of the opening to Rita Ora’s “I Will Never Let You Down” and the chorus sounds similar to Nico and Vinz’s “Am I Wrong?” The best part of the chorus (and the whole song) is obviously when Adam Levine sings, “Following, following, following”; it makes me want to skip. While the song doesn’t necessarily feel “new”, it’s still super catchy and Adam’s voice just fits so right. I’m sure we won’t be getting a new single for a while since this song is likely to blow up, but I’m excited to hear more! Maroon5’s new album, V, is out September 2nd!
Reblog and spread the word!
Superbad - Jesse McCartney
Review:
Jesse McCartney has truly outdone himself. The 27 year old singer-songwriter has been giving us hits since he was 15. Today, Jesse is a confident, hot musician who going for a totally different sound. Many singers today are exploring a musical vibe from the past, Ariana Grande with her 90s sound, and Justin Timberlake being Justin Timberlake. Jesse’s new song Superbad, has this funky baseline that makes you want to dance. The song is accompanied by a gorgeous music video. It starts off with a Wolf of Wallstreet-like narrative, followed by Jesse wearing hot outfits looking like a badass in a mansion. There’s a close up of his face that will most likely cause you to faint, but that’s okay, it’s worth it! His leading lady is #Superbad, modeling designer clothes for Jesse, strutting up and down a hallway like a runway. The song will be a hit if you let it, so go get it on iTunes, and tell all your friends!
Ariana Grande - Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea)Â
Review:Â
Before the song was released, anyone could have predicted that Problem would be a huge hit. Two of music's hottest new stars, rising pop princess Ariana Grande and the amazing Iggy Azaelea have come together for this sassy anthem; they're the perfect team! I love this song! I will say that at first I found the saxaphone to be overwhelming and kind of chessy, only because the sax and big brass sections seem to be the "new thing", (ie Talk Dirty, anything by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis..) but it has officially grown on me. Its a fun track to dance and sing along to. It has a nice bridge, however the chorus right after the bridge is a tad underwhelming, I think the song would have been better if there was a change in that place since it had such a buildup from the soft bridge and break. Overall, Its a great song, really smart and well written. Iggy is perfect, as always. Can't wait to see what else these girls do in the future. The sky's the limit!
Lily Allen - Sheezus
Review:Â
The title track of Lily Allen's cheekily titled third album, SHEEZUS, has just been released! Lily has always been a favorite of mine because of her unique pop sound and interesting/funny lyrics. "Sheezus" does not disapoint; Lily uses a hypnotizing beat and names Rihanna, GaGa, Lorde, Beyonce, and Katy Perry all in this one track! The song is all about today's pop divas all wanting to be at the top of the list, or as Lily calls it, Sheezus. This upcoming album has a bunch of great singles like "Air Balloon", and "Our Time", proving that Lily is serious about getting her crown.Â
Jason Derulo - Talk Dirty (album)
Review:
Ever since his Imogen Heap sampling hit, “Whatcha Say”, Jason Derulo has been a staple on the charts. His RnB/Pop catalogue includes, “In My Head”, “It Girl”, “Don’t Wanna Go Home”, “The Other Side” and the duet with his long time girlfriend, Jordin Sparks, “Marry Me”. The lead single off his new album, “Talk Dirty” has reached such success that Derulo changed the name of his album to Talk Dirty at the last minute; it was originally named Tattoos. On this album, there are many features. One that stands out, quite hilariously, is “Wiggle” featuring Snoop Dogg (he is no longer Snoop Lion). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW-FniwYp4k The song is produced by one of my favorite people on earth, singer-songwriter/producer Wallpaper.
While Jason has urban songs featuring Snoop, Kid Ink, and Tyga, he also has a bunch of pop songs on the album. My favorite is called “Tattoo”, which presumably the album was originally named after. Listen to it ABOVE! Jason’s third studio album, Talk Dirty, is available on iTunes for $6.99. Go grab a copy!
Icona Pop - It's My Party (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)
Review:Â
Icona Pop only has hits! At the Miley Cyrus concert over the weekend, I found myself unable to sit down during their set. Not only do the girls have amazing onstage energy, they also have great voices. One of the songs they sang during their set was their new single, "It's My Party". The song samples the 60s classic with the same title, adding beats and a verse from Ty Dolla Sign. Love the production of this song. Icona Pop desrves so much success. xx to the girls for putting on such a fun show, no opening act has ever gotten me THAT pumped up!
P.S. Sky Ferreira was awesome, I love her even more now. And Miley's vocals are fantastic. AMAZING show, go see Bangerz if you can!
Bebe Rexha- I Can't Stop Drinking About You Review: Bebe Rexha is likely to be the breakout star of summer 2014. The Brooklyn bombshell is a songwriter, cashing in big time on her hit, "The Monster" by Eminem and Rihanna. Bebe's voice will also sound familiar to you because it's constantly being played on the radio; Bebe lends her voice to the EDM smash, "Take Me Home". Now, the songstress is releasing her own music! Bebe's new song, "I Can't Stop Drinking About You", is a cleverly titled powerhouse hit featuring techno beats and a simple chorus. This song has been stuck in my head for a couple days now, but it's worth it!
Cody Simpson- SurfboardÂ
Review:Â
Behold! This year is the year of the surfboard! Or serfbort, depending on if you're Beyonce or not. One of my favorite singers/dancers/boys, Cody Simpson, made is debut on Dancing With the Stars last night and simultaneously released a new summer jam! It was a big night for the 17 year old Aussie surfer. At first listen, "Surfboard" seems like any other beach tune that Kidz Bop would love to get thier hands on. But it's Cody, so obviously he wouldn't leave us with a boring, predictable melody. Cody's artisty and musicality shines on the chorus, where turning up ensues. The bridge is the best part, watch out for the awesome break in it! This song is going to be huge! Keep it up Cody!
Sia - Chandelier
