Pros of bouldering: I'm much physically stronger, I have more trust in my body and its capabilities, a great community, lots of queer people around, an immense amount of satisfaction when I send a climb, more mental stability
Cons of bouldering: the fingerprint sensor on my phone doesn't work 70% of the time
Bouldering is like programming; You spend hours (and lots of caffeine) trying to solve a problem. When it's a fun problem you keep thinking about it all the time and want to work on it every free minute you have; and then when you've finally solved it you achieve happiness for all of three seconds before you move to the next problem. It's an eternal cycle of days/weeks of frustration followed by a very short burst of intense euphoria.
I got thinking about a SoC modern AU where the crows are all rock climbers and now I present to thee: the crows' climbing styles Inej: She's builderer that occasionally has run-ins with the police (this is basically already canon lol). In the gym, she does a lot of bat hangs and other crazy technical stuff to find the "short beta." The taller crows started incorporating super reachy stuff into games of add-on just to see what she'd do. Kaz: If we're sticking to canon, he'd be a crack climber because they tend to wear gloves. But vibe-wise? He'd pick the routes with the nastiest crimps and pinches. Bonus points if it's got an awkward reach or traverse he has to puzzle through. When playing add-on with the rest of the crows, he'd pick the worst holds and everyone would yell at him. Also I feel like his footwork would be hella precise because on bad leg days he'd focus on adapting and finding workarounds.
Jesper: 100% a lead climber. Bro is an adrenaline junkie
Wylan: Likes complicated boulders with lots of motor planning involved. Bonus points if it relies on flexibility more than strength. His favorite thing is breaking beta by becoming a human pretzel. Matthias: I feel like he's the kind of guy who just gets lost in the rhythm on a tall top rope route. He prefers the calmer, controlled feel of static climbing. He also campuses stuff a lot but he's humble about it (like, if he realizes he's campusing someone's project he'll stop). Oh and he's on team overhang and is Nina's belay partner. Nina: In a belaytionship with Matthias. Basically his polar opposite. Will dyno everything even though she's tall enough to static it, most of the time just to spite Matthias. Loves flying up the slab wall (as a chubby gal who likes slab I'm kinda projecting here haha).
Kuwei: Is tired of being dragged into games of add-on with the crows. Generally hides from them by practicing his balance on the slackline in the corner (idk if that's super common for climbing gyms to have a slackline but mine does so yeah)
I watched this interview with Alex Honnold and he said something along the lines of how climbing has changed his perspective on failure because as climbers we fail on a daily basis and we are constantly trying things that are ever so slightly more difficult for us everytime and failing somehow makes us better and it changes something in me. As someone who entered the community a little while ago, a place that gave me not only comfort but also the space to fail with all my heart, to come crashing down, to fall, to get stuck, to get confused, hell, it was even recommended. "Fall a few time and you'll lose the fear of falling", was what was told to me on my first day and yesterday I found myself handing out the same advice, so I guess climbing changed my perspective on failing and falling too. It sometimes feels so too good to be true, a community that claps when you fail, not because you failed but because you tried and thats all that matters - the fact that you gave it a shot. How are we as humans made to constantly believe that failing is horrible and never made to understand that failing is just as important ? It took me 2 months to be okay with falling and I think I'll do it again because - as climbers we fail on a daily basis and we are constantly trying things that are ever so slightly more difficult for us everytime and somehow that makes us better and maybe, just maybe, failing and falling might just make me cable enough to work out the route for life as well.

yes, India made legal gender change impossible but the doctor down the street who gives me my T shots in a clinic so small that it's just two rooms was excited for me when she said my voice had dropped yes, India made legal gender change impossible but the receptionist who could see that I was a man didn't bat an eyelash when I asked to see the gynecologist and called me sir when he asked how I wanted to pay yes, India made legal gender change impossible but the barber cuts my hair exactly how I want it and never gave me strange looks for being in a men's salon not even back when I didn't pass as one
yes, India made legal gender change impossible but my friends have always gendered me correctly and stick to it even when it confuses other people and my friend's little sibling calls me older brother in Kannada yes, India made legal gender change impossible but my dog learned my new name quicker than the humans and she runs to give me a kiss when she's told to without being confused about who's being referred to
yes, India made legal gender change impossible but I can feel the Adam's apple growing in my throat and my muscles getting stronger, and my smile more real and I'm growing a beard, and I talk more freely
yes, India made legal gender change impossible but I'm here, and I'm alive, and so are you and there are good people, people who care and don't let them make you forget that-- you are not alone.
