I miss when ads were a single click and then they’re gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesn’t even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.

I hate advertising. I hate that you can’t do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.

Sometimes I think about Finnick trying to befriend Katniss before the Quell and I lose my shit

The other rebels are like you need to subtly let her know you're on her side, so you go bet and turn your charm up to 11. Which would have maybe worked on anyone else but this is Katniss Everdeen we're talking about.

So now you're stuck doing increasingly ridiculous social gymnastics every time she's around and still by the time the night before the Games arrives the only thing she's convinced of about you is that you are going to try to fucking murder her

So you freak out, seek out Haymitch and basically go "hey what the fuck is wrong with your kid". And Haymitch just stares ahead for a second, nods, takes off his bracelet, says "wear this" and leaves. You fucking hate district 12

So you go okay. Breathing exercises. This is fine. Guess I'll have to save her life during the Games or sth maybe that'll do the trick. And when you see the Arena you cheer up for a sec bc you definitely have the advantage here she'll have to trust you right?

Wrong. She can fucking swim. SHE CAN FUCKING SWIM.

So now you're in the Cornucopia with no cards up your sleeve, no time left, and arguably the other deadliest tribute in that Arena pointing at you with a bow, and so you go "you know what, fuck it, I'm going to die anyways" and you show her the bracelet

I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.

and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.

one of my favorite types of content is people who analyse low brow media with the same seriousness with which one generally uses to analyse artsy/prestige media. not cynicism, no mockery, no acting like they're above it, even if they think its bad. everything has themes even when not intended to be there, everything says something about the context in which it was made even if its not trying to, and sometimes the lack of depth betrays a different type of depth in what the media does not realize that its saying much more than the little that its saying on purpose. even if the craft is bad.

Just watched supergirl and oh my god i am so obssed with the fact that we have a female main character and shes sloppy and snippy and rude and an alcoholic and messy and flawed. And yet shes still able to be kind and good and be an inspiration to people. All while not having a romance and while not trying to appeal to anyone. This is what everything should be.

i remember being 15 and wanting literally nothing more than to be taken seriously and listened to and every thought and feeling i had was dismissed because i was a hormonal teenager. i was well aware at that point that a lot of the things i felt were probably because i was a kid, but that didnt make any of it less real, and being dismissed because of my age 1. did not help 2. did not make me feel better 3. made me angry at and untrustworthy of adults because they refused to listen to me. teenagers are people. kids are people. one of the only major things separating them from adults are experience and wisdom. they have like. you know. interiority

i think that a lot of the fandom mischaracterises hijacked!peeta and it low key bugs me

because he isn't a single-minded murderer or filled with bloodlust - he's terrified

like a wounded animal, he lashes out at katniss because of how much he fears her; his mind has been so utterly warped that he can't see an escape other than through violence. he's convinced she's going to torture him, so he wants to stop her

which is why i think the idea that he hurts her post-mockingjay isn't a fair assumption; by this point, he's recovered enough that he is no longer violent. even in the capitol, his final descriptive relapse shows him punishing himself before he's willing to lay a hand on katniss

while he'll obviously never fully recover, his reported periods of relapse (grabbing the back of chairs and the like) are drawn from terror, previously aimed at katniss and later at himself as he gains back functionality

he was never warped into a mutt, or stripped of his personhood, or turned into a sadist. he was just made to fear everyone and everything - primarily katniss, which then manifested as a fear of himself.

“Gale Hawthorne is a heartless murder!”

no, he’s actually a radicalized refugee who witnessed the genocide of his district AS A TEENAGER and then had to lead the survivors into the wilderness towards a pipe dream where he desperately and gratefully gave that power to someone he trusted.

Coin graciously allowed him to work alongside Beetee to make plans for her army. Beetee, a nearly sixty year old man, encouraged the team up and worked with a freshly traumatized 18 year old Gale to develop every single plan and weapon.

Coin’s entire scheme served only to further fester Gale’s growing (and justified) animosity towards the people who murdered almost everyone he ever knew.

…only for her to twist his ideas and use them against one of his own people, who he loved, so she could control his childhood best friend. she encouraged his violence for her gain.

Coin’s betrayal towards Gale almost exactly mirrors how Beetee’s ideas for the games where twisted to kill his own son.

Gale was captured and unconscious when the bombs dropped on Prim, Beetee was in the control room where it happened. (No one blames Beetee. i don’t either, the blame belongs to Coin, but it serves to mention.)

people saying Gale is just like Snow are completely losing the plot and MUST have shipping goggles on, because in no way is a victim of genocide comparable to their oppressor.

is Gale faultless? no. Gale had a problem with boundaries (to say the least) and needed intense therapy. instead, he got to watch bombs destroy his entire life.

Gale represents the “ugly” side of surviving that most people do not want to see but people need to start seeing it. there are hundreds of thousands of survivors and victims in real life and some of them are justifiably just as angry and vengeful as Gale.

if you don’t see Palestine in Gale then you are not reading the story as the political commentary it is.

as an aside i think it also bears mentioning that Beetee most likely sees Gale as a son. they share such similarities in mind and they worked so closely. i would love to see fresh talks about that instead of the same tired ship goggles treating gale as a useless part of the plot. the last thing Beetee did with Ampert was plan a bombing and there he was with Gale doing some more bombing plans. the man loves a good explosion fr.

Gale walked into military brainwashing with his eyes open. He willingly volunteered himself as a tool for violence. Peeta didn't want the Capitol to make a monster of him. He was unwillingly forced into becoming a tool for violence and even then he eventually healed from and overcame that.

And THAT is where they differ. Gale believes the world is changed through force. Peeta believes the world is changed through radical love. They both want positive change. They are both capable of and guilty of violence. But one believes it acceptable as a means to an end and the other doesn't.

Gale is a necessary part of the story. As a girl, trust, I hate him too. But as a writer, I recognize he adds depth to the story and shows you that there is a wrong way to go about positive change.

There's also an interesting contrast to his one sided pissing contest over Katniss with Peeta. Gale feels a sense of ownership over her and, in doing so, fails to recognize her person hood. Peeta never robs Katniss of her person hood because he recognizes her innate power of autonomy and choice. Peeta makes his opinions and decisions known, to be sure, but he respects Katniss' decisions and ability to come to her own conclusions.

In Peeta's mind, there was no love triangle. He assumed Katniss and Gale were in love and that he was never an option for her.

In Gale's mind, there was a love triangle. He assumed he had a chance with Katniss. Maybe he even thought he was her favored choice.

In Katniss's mind, survival was the main focus, not love. Her primary goal, was staying alive and looking after her sister.

Contrary to growing popular belief, Peeta is a VASTLY more complex character than Gale.

Anyway, Gale is reflective of the majority of Panem. There are thousands of people around him at any given time that act and think just like him. He fell for the anger and division the games were designed to create on countless occasions. Again, just like the majority of people. He has a revolutionary spirit, yes, but with no gauge within it that could materialize it on his own (more on that later). Katniss conducting more analysis on him ≠ more complex; in fact, it says the opposite.

Peeta utterly puzzles Katniss a number of times. She cannot make sense of him, though we know she rather passionately attempts to, and it’s to the point where she often times just gives up on trying. THAT is how complex he is. PEETA is the radical one in this society for daring to choose humanity over brutality. He broke the status quo. A child abuse victim who has the brute strength to be exactly what the Capitol desires, yet is the designated character to symbolize peace throughout the series. And when he inspires Katniss to tap more into her own similar qualities and showcase them alongside him, THEY are the catalyst that spark the revolution Gale merely rode the wave of. And just like Peeta overcame his childhood of violence, he overcame his hijacking without us ever knowing how exactly he managed to. The important part is that he DID, and his kind nature could never be stomped out for good.

To be clear, both characters are incredibly complex. Suzanne put so much work into crafting their arcs, and I will never set out to indicate otherwise. But it is Peeta who is more often taken for granted and looked over, even by those who love his character sometimes, simply because his actions are often undefinable (again, complexity in and of itself) and less aggressively imposed.
