1) The first story I ever worked on for any length of time was for a Godzilla “screenplay”. Nobody shall ever read that for it is trash.

2) No, i don’t enjoy forcing my muse to work overtime to meet a deadline for fun.

3) I have a lot of ideas that I will outline whenever the idea strikes me, but I tend to write one work at a time.

4) Outline, outline, outline. Straying? Only if I’m inspired by one line or scene and then I feel I can reinforce that later with another line or scene.

5) My apartment, with lyricless music playing and all my notes ready.

6) In a day? Taking breaks for bodily functions, resting eyes and food/drink and fully inspired, I think i cap out at 15k.

7) Romance. I hate it, massive distraction.

8) Yes, frequently. literally anything by Katou Tatsuya is good music.

9) I don’t write fanfiction anymore. I prefer to work on my own works now. The last fanfic i wrote was a combat scene for Star Trek which was fun but barely 2k words long.

10) I outline a lot, so that’s the most fun for me. of the three, Dialogue comes easiest, Exposition isn’t super necessary when you aim to make readers ask questions of everything and Plot is woven into the fabric of the story.

11) Fluff. Angst is overrated and Smut doesn’t have enough adjectives.

12) I very much want to write some “Did We Just Have Tea with Cthulhu?” but i have to set up the Cthulhu properly first.

13) any trope involving Rape can remain in the deepest part of writer’s block for all eternity.

14) One that could teleport so we could leave and one that’s immortal so we could have a decent conversation afterwards.

15) I would sure as hell hope it’s my original work, but good god, converting that into a screenplay is beyond me.

16) Considering I don’t release them, all of them.

17) My original work because from start to finish, its mine.

18) “you know, the math doesn't make it easier, so I'm just going to say it.” In context but without spoilers, its the pivotal moment where a highly logical character has resigned themselves to the fact that no matter how much you explain something, someone’s gonna panic over the next thing they say, and it was just a fun thing to admit. There’s no sugarcoating some really difficult concepts, and the concept they described afterwards was one of them.

19) I had one character that was an openly racist person in a caste/class-based-society, and that was painful to write. It made me sick to my stomach multiple times, and I don’t feel the need to write that again except in historical context.

20) This poor security checkpoint guard who is confronted by- in short order- a famous general and the administrator of his home city, and five of her eight top lieutenants. within a few minutes, and they had a strategy meeting basically right outside his checkpoint. Poor guy was just intimidated all to hell and could barely respond to direct questions, let alone comment on anything in a wider context. And THEN he was conscripted into the General’s camp for knowing too much. I feel bad for him!

21) And here’s why I don’t write fanfic anymore- I wrote a community based fic once with dozens of OCs mixed with official characters. I was about half done with the plot when i realized we could never publish it or make it canon or get anything done with it, and it soured my enthusiasm so much that threw me into a decade long funk of Writer’s Block.

22) Yes. I didn’t want to kill a character, but I did because I didn’t see another way to end the scene. It hurt, a lot. MONTHS later, I realized a way to keep her alive, so I rewrote the scene to make her survive. I cried in relief as I did the editing.

23) I’d rewrite the community fic so it’d remove the official characters from that IP and we could actually DO SOMETHING with all our work on it. but I’m not in touch with any of them any more and I wouldn’t know where to begin.

24) Thanks to absurdly long Japanese Light Novel titles, you can come up with a long-form name for ANYTHING and it’ll be fine.

25) I might not write fics, but I still make OCs. OC crossovers are great sources of inspiration.

26) The racist class/caste society I mentioned earlier. It goes so against what I believe that it made me physically ill to write.

27) If its my original work? I had dozens of sequels planned, so I’d made more. :D

30) depends on what you call long. that community fanfic i wrote and gave up on halfway through? that was 337k words. but the idea with my original work i want to see written is that sometimes, the setting is more powerful and inspiring than the characters that live inside it.

I’m happy you sent this ask, because it’s a perfect place to talk about how someone can get hurt, feel wronged, and become susceptible to extremist recruiting.

First off, treat this as a simple yes or no question, asked with zero surrounding context, the platonic idea of penis preference if you will. “I don’t find penises attractive” is not a sentiment that makes you a TERF. You’re okay not liking them. My nonbinary wife doesn’t particularly like them, yet they are married to me (who has one) and we love each other more than anything in the world. 

In fact, in the abstract, I don’t like ‘em much either, and I own one! Ridiculous looking thing, wish I didn’t have to deal with it. A general dislike of genitals doesn’t make you a TERF… not by itself.

Now, here is where the critical thinking comes in, because if you posted something like that on Tumblr or something, it has a different context. You might not even know! It could be a totally innocent mistake, and it happens, and some women either get criticized in ways that makes them feel attacked, or actually attacked because you never know if what you post online is hitting someone on a bad day or a good day. 

The context first of all is, without any clarifying statements, saying you don’t like a genital could imply you’re reducing anyone with that particular set of genitals down to their genitals only. And it could result in either someone telling you it sounds TERFy (if they’re trying to be gentle) or calling you a TERF (if they’re out of spoons) because that’s what TERFs do. Here’s where it becomes a recruit pitch.

You say “I don’t like penises.” This doesn’t mean you’re saying you dislike trans women (not all of whom have penises anyway), but if you get the above lecture/yelling, a radfem can come along and empathetically agree how unfair it is that someone made you hurt for saying you don’t like a genital, and it’s not fair to tell a lesbian she has to sleep with a male or she’s a TERF and- OH WAIT A MINUTE!

Hold up, it looks like they were just being nice but wait wait, they just slid cozily from “it’s okay not to like a penis” to “anyone with a penis is male.” See that? Like a sleight of hand, once you’ve agreed with that premises, saying “I don’t like penises” suddenly becomes attached to “and anyone with a penis is male.”

Alright now in context, going back this kind of equivalency is so common with radfems that at this point saying you don’t like a genital is what we call a dogwhistle. It’s a phrase which is seemingly innocent, and can be innocent, which has been so widely appropriated by a hate group that it carries extra connotations in a certain context. Contexts like posting on Tumblr, which happens to have a particularly large trans population.

Now you can’t know every single dogwhistle because that’s the whole reason they exist - so normal people don’t spot someone’s bigotry and it looks like a disenfranchised group is getting angry over an innocent statement.

And lastly, which you probably already know, but generally not being interested in something doesn’t have to equate to disliking anyone with that trait, or even not being attracted to someone with that trait. I bring this up because the difference between a lesbian who just generally doesn’t like genital and a TERF is that the TERF things anyone with a penis is automatically bad and a male and probably reading this right now thinks I’m saying you have to have sex with men or like penises, somehow, despite saying exactly the opposite.

You may have a general preference, but in practice I’m sure you’ve already found a difference between “I am physically attracted to how this person looks” and “Holy shit I am in love this person is amazing and everything about them is beautiful.” If you haven’t had that experience yet, I can promise you some day you will. Not necessarily over genitals, but some day someone will come into your life and you’ll love every part of them whether or not it’s something you normally find abstractly attractive.

Keep your heart open to love, keep your mind open to constructive criticism, and you’ll never be a radfem or TERF or SWERF or whatever. That’s all.

Longing for ancient worlds

I’ve been a fan of Assassin’s Creed series for many years now. I replayed early games many many times, I own several collector’s editions and I’ll forever be angsty that I missed Evie Frye statue and now it costs like, 200$ minimum. Unity put a temporary stop to all that (it took me TWO YEARS to finish the main story, it was such a slog) and I didn’t check any of the later games until now.

Earlier this year Irian (my wife!) and I visited Rome - and that of course meant I had to replay the whole Ezio trilogy (let me just say that seeing Colloseum in real life after climbing it in game is AMAZING). Riding on the nostalgia, I decided to finally give the new games a chance. I loved every freakin’ second of Syndicate. It had almost everything I wanted from Assassin’s Creed game - it had great parkour, it had beautiful world, decent anchoring to history, great main characters… I honestly think it’s the most polished AC game there is.

Then I picked up Origins. You know, that game when they saw how horrendously big fail Unity was and decided to “tweak the formula”. It was fun, though it felt much less assassin-y then all the previous games. And now I’m playing Odyssey and to be perfectly honest, with each day I’m more frustrated with it. No, perhaps frustrated isn’t the right word. Sad. It makes me sad.

Because it’s no longer Assassin’s Creed.

Okay. I’m Canadian so I know a shit ton about staying warm if you’re new to the cold there here are some tips!(add more if you know more!)

1. Wear grippy shoes, nothing is worse than snowmelt freezing on your skin.

2.Do not wear jeans as your outter layer. wet denim is the most body heat siphoning mother fucker known to man or god

3. Have a warm drink with you. It will help. Even just some hot soup broth or boiled water will help keep you warm.

4. Wear a moisture wicking layer close to your skin so you don’t get cold from your own sweat. You will sweat. That is fine and expected.

5. If you start feeling too warm even though you were cold and like you have to take your clothes of DO NOT. Call 911. You are suffering from hypothermia.

6. Bring a blanket and a heat source that needs no electricity with you in your vehicle. You do not want to be stranded with no heat in the case that something happens.

7. If you are struggling on ice as you’re walking, stop. Get your balance and penguin shuffle to a less slippery patch of ground. There’s usually less ice on one side of the walk and it’s better to walk in the snow next to the sidewalk than it is to eat dirt when ya slip

8. STAY THE ABSOLUTE FUCK AWAY FROM FROZEN BODIES OF WATER. Ponds are deceptive as shit even with the “solid blue tried and true” thing. Go around.

9. Keep kids warm. They run at a higher body temperature and will feel the effects of the cold worse than you.

10. Huddling is your best friend. Even if you don’t know the person, remember you’re both cold, especially if they don’t have the right clothing for the weather.

11. Pay attention to windchill. That is how cold it feels. Dress appropriately please. I know it’s tempting to dress for style, but there’s nothing stylish about losing your toes to frostbite

12. Don’t touch metal if you can avoid it. It will sap your heat and likely freeze to anything wet. Like tongues. Don’t fucking lick a pole.

13. If someone licks something metal, pour warm water over their tongue to get them free. If they yank, they will bleed. A lot.

14. Keep your ears, noes, fingers, and toes warm. You’re extremities will get cold first and are the most likely parts of your body to get frostbite.

15. If you see someone who may not have a place to be in the cold, offer to help them find a local shelter or library. The elements, especially the cold, are some of the largest threats to those who cannot avoid them.

16. If you find yourself stuck outside for a long time, sleep during the day when it is warmest, and avoid sleeping on the ground. Stay awake as much as you can at night so you have a better chance of staying warm.

Also, look out for your local animals.   Cats will sleep on car wheels where you can’t see them - it’s elevated, rubber is warmer than the ground, and it’s a little hideyhole where they feel safe.  Check your wheel wells and under your car before you go driving off, you might save a tiny life.

You can also, if you’re so inclined, make a little winter shelter for cats and small animals fairly easily and cheaply.

[Here] is an even simpler (ad possibly cheaper) version of basically the same thing.  As long as you smooth out the opening (so the lil guys don’t injure themselves on it), insulate, and line it, and then put it somewhere where it’s not going to get flooded or the animal snowed in, you’re grand. It might not seem like much in the face of subzero temperatures, but it’s damn well better than nothing.
