Endlessly diabolical how you can't say words like rape and suicide uncensored without either being criticised by idiots or punished by conglomerates.
It's not r*pe, it's rape. It's not su*cide, it's suicide. Not unalive, dead. The backbone needs to be reintroduced en masse because softening the blow of these concepts with advertising language does absolutely nothing but allow people unaffected by them to feel not even a sting of what they can do, prompting inaction.
And it's been proven that on certain websites, you don't even face a repercussion for using the words as they are. People just started censoring themselves because they feared the potential lack of views and likes and followers which is so nasty itself.
I attended an anti-suicide seminar in college. One of the big takeaways from it was that stigmatizing suicide increases the rate of suicide, because people who are feeling suicidal feel like they can't ask for help. Every time I see babytalk garbage like 'unalive', I think of that.
Use the real words. Words have power, and they matter.

there is this really specific thing that very Online women of a certain age (mostly older millennials and younger gen x in my experience) who are married to a man will do where they will refer to their husbands as "Mr. (Part of My Username)"
so like if the username is something like "dancingwithbears" they'll refer to their husband as "Mr. Bears"

As a âvery online woman of a certain ageâ I do not do this. But also, I donât talk about my spouse in circles where he does not already have his own identity, except in vague references like these. Perhaps my online behavior doesnât match up as neatly.
However, I have a âvery online child of a certain relative ageâ who exists in the world of usernames. They and their friends refer to parents by adding Mom/Mother etc to their own usernames. Which I find endearing. Like when they were all little and school friends called you âJoeâs Momâ.
Very not Online based, but the Millennials and Gen Zs who work with my Gen X wife (let's pretend her name is "Jenny" for the purpose of this), all refer to me as "Mr. Jenny."

Its to the point where most Americans canât conceive of a walkable community because everywhere is like this and several generations have now grown up in a world like this. Thereâs hardly anyone that can conceive of a world that isnât like this. Most people either cave in and get a car or end up isolated. I live in a city thatâs mostly walkable by North American standards and I still end up walking in the dirt on the edge of a stroad a lot of the time.
And don't forget, we can't get decent public transportation either.

After spending the first 30 years of my life in a smaller city in Canada that always had sidewalks and paths everywhere, then my first 5 years in the US in NYC, I was very shocked upon moving to Jersey at just how many places had no sidewalks or safe places to walk, especially all the places where a sidewalk on a major roadway just ... ends.
My favorite bizarre ones though are the places where there are zero sidewalks or paths BUT an intersection will have crosswalks and walk lights and one big square of pavement at each corner where the crosswalks connect. What.

You gotta read and watch some old books and films that arenât 100% modern politically correct. Iâm not saying you should agree with everything in them but you need to learn where genres came from to understand what those genres are doing today and where media deconstructing old tropes is coming from.
Also, more often than you might think, theyâre not actually promoting bigotry so much as âdidnât consider all the implications of somethingâ or just used words that were polite then but considered offensive now.

When we choose to avoid history because it's Problematic or Says Bad Things, we are choosing to divorce ourselves from understanding how we came from that time to this one, which makes it even more likely for the cycle to repeat, with no one but a few people with shelves of old books aware that it's happened before.
and this shit's important. Media from the past tells us how people from the past acted and thought and behaved.
Plus, a lot of these media pieces were socially acceptable and/or progressive for their time. For example, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, while it contains a lot of words and ideas that are offensive now, was very progressive for its time. The book is a statement piece for how a young man who's grown up in a racist environment, with no words to explain himself other than racist and bigoted ones, decides that the whole system is shit and he's not going to follow those rules any more. So not reading or engaging with it because it uses the n-word a lot really misses the point.
also the idea that we're more progressive than we used to be because time has elapsed so progress must have occurred is extremely complacent.... and very easy to check, if you bother to check. the last ten years' slide into fascism means there's movies from 2001 that are more aggressively feminist or anti-racist or both than anything getting greenlit today.
This is reminding me about the discourse that popped up a while back about the Laura Ingalls Wilder "Little House" books. They were adapted from the memory and diary entries of a woman who lived in the 1800s. They're not meant to be a statement - they're a memoir. They're a snapshot of one family's experience at particular period of time. Of COURSE the attitudes and language and events described are going to be problematic. It's ridiculous to expect that something over a century old is going to fit the same Overton Window parameters as we have today, especially considering media that is much more recent is being written off, even if it was progressive as hell at the time. (Looking at everyone who questions why Legally Blonde is considered a landmark feminist work, or why Rocky Horror Picture Show is considered landmark queer representation in cinema.)
Moreover, it lies with the reader to exercise critical thinking and educate themselves. If you're reading or watching something with material that troubles you, first question why it does. Then question why it's there. There's usually a reason.
