K-Pop Demon Hunters, but (early 1700's) Canada 🇨🇦

I wanted to hop on this trend a while ago, but coming from Canada and its history of colonization made it ~incredibly complicated~

So I treated it like a research project to learn more about the peoples who were here long before my settler ancestors arrived in Canada ~350 years ago. I tried to incorporate said research into this illustration.

Left - An Acadian who wields a scythe. Her family of farmers settled in what is now known as New Brunswick. Her family and everyone else in their settlement have only survived as long as they have with the help of the Mi'kmaq people. Beyond teaching them how to survive, the Mi'kmaq traded knowledge, goods, and customs with the Acadians. Leading to intermarriages between the two groups and a long a lasting relationship between the two that still exists today.

Right- A Mi'kmaw who wields an nigoqol (eel spear). She is a member of the Wôbanaki ("People of the Dawn") Confederacy, a confederation of five Eastern Algonquian nations: the Abenaki, Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot. I based the beaded and sewn patterns on her clothes from a few historical sources, including a few museum pieces (here, and here) as well as paintings and illustrations from around the same time period. If I got ANYTHING wrong about her appearance/clothing - please let me knowI will make adjustments IMMEDIATELY.

Center - A coureur des bois, wielding a rifle. The daughter of a French-Canadian Voyageur and an Ojibwe woman, she navigates the waters of the Ottawa River via birch bark canoe carved by her mother. In exchange for European goods, she receives furs from various First Nations as she travels back and forth from the Great Lakes to Montreal. The sash around her waist is a ceinture fléchée (aka arrow sash), denoting her trade.

I had a lot of fun looking up reference images and doing research, but again - if I got anything wrong, please let me know. Canada has and continues to do incredible harm to the First Nations - I just wanted to highlight a small moment in history when some settlers weren't absolute assholes and managed to work with the original caretakers of the land they settled on.

I finally finished a little project I've been working on. It's a mini ofrenda that I made for my Dad/Papa, Serge. He was an electrician who loved disco, wood working, welding, AND who managed to cut off a finger (and a half) AFTER retiring from his heavy machinery job.

Good job, Papa.

Also, he was from Quebec and his favourite colour was green, obviously.

qathet is a ʔayʔaǰuθəm word that means “working together”. The word was gifted as a name to this particular region by the Elders of Tla’amin Nation. qathet, pronounced KAW-thet, is intentionally lowercase as Tla'amin Nation traditional orthography does not include capital letters.

Recently wrapped up some client work I did with the amazing company, Snag! They wanted pirate-themed images for their onboarding guide for new employees, with some DND flair. It was right up my alley and super fun to work on.

They also asked for some vignettes of the characters/crew members I designed to pepper throughout their onboarding materials. I'm super happy with how they turned out.

An illustration I made and gifted to my Aunt and Uncle this year. They met through and are still avid members of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms), so I wanted to make it look like an illuminated manuscript.

As for the details: their last name starts with an A, Kate keeps bees, Chris is a huge trekkie, and they are standing in the field where they originally met.
