So as a promise to Scarlet Rose, I have finally decided to share my MLP commission done by Andy Price created at C2E2 2012!

So a bit of back story for those who like that sort of thing: I became a Brony in mid to late 2011, and the Brony fandom didn't really pick up until late 2011/early 2012. When I went to C2E2 2012 there were not many people doing MLP fanart. I shared my lamentations with Katie Cook, who was one of the only artists with MLP fanart, and she redirected me to Andy. We hit it off, and the rest is history!

Andy originally had this on DA until he got signed onto the comic. I guess he took it down due to the shotgun reference. I never really posted it anywhere since I don't frequent Ponychan/Derpybooru, no one cared on Facebook when I showed a piece of it, and I don't know DA's copyright rules. But now that I have a Tumblr, well...

So, I lurk in some writer subreddits, and a frequent topic of discussion is prose: what constitutes good prose, how do you write it, how do you improve it, etc. And yesterday I stumbled across one topic about the difference between good descriptive prose, and purple prose. OP asks people to share some of their favourite authors who they think write beautiful prose without tipping into purple. No problem; people are happy to oblige.

One person says that Steinbeck is one of their favourite authors for prose, and then they share an example of what they would consider purple prose. It is so violetly awful that I think the poster must have written it themselves as a kind of parody of purple prose. Other people assumed the same.

But as it turns out, they are quoting from a book written by a YouTuber whose channel ia dedicated to talking about writing (namely, their own writing, which is genius, but often not comprehensible to the drooling plebs).

Naturally, I read the free sample of their book in awe and horror, and I'd like to share some screenshots with you. If you also have trouble defining or understanding what purple prose is, it's this.

How would you describe a dragon to someone who has never seen a dragon?

didnt know how to interpret "make it a lizard" so i wrote lizard and drew an arrow pointing to the horse so people know its a lizard. Also didn't know what bat horns were so I gave it a horned bat nose

this is literally exactly like medieval bestiaries. a description which was game-of-telephoned out of an ancient account from somebody who might have seen the animal in question, being misinterpreted by an artist who has not seen it

Also a whole lot of people need it to hold down a job or stay in school regardless of reproductive risk: it offers menstrual control. It can be the difference between debilitating, bedbound periods and normal function. It’s medicine. It’s also very cheap to produce and returns soooo many thousands of dollars to the economy for every dollar it costs, so don’t let anyone make a false financial argument about it.
