Tinfoil hat moment but I don't think he was dumb, I think he was strategic. He put her in a situation in which she had to either: sell her car (so the only means of transportation is now in his name), or maybe even to drop out (to have time for the second job) if she wants to feed the kids. He did it right when she was aaaaaalmost done with her degree. Either way, it's sabotage.

Sometimes when an action makes NO sense to us ("he's like a stupid alien"), it's bc we are not understanding its true motivation/purpouse. If his goal was control, financial pressure and limiting her options due to lack of funds, it makes perfect sensie to buy the truck.

I’m asking for some help. My employer slashed my hours for the past two and a half months gradually down from 40 hours a week to 8. All of my savings have drained as I’ve desperately searched for a new job and I’m running out of both money and options. I finally managed to make my boss give me more hours but it takes effect on July 15th. They can’t even confirm I’d get my hours completely back and I don’t have enough money to pay rent for this month and won’t be able to afford rent for next month.

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

Day 3, Wednesday 15th July 2026

We just hit 12,000 responses! 😁🎉

This is a few thousand fewer than usual by this stage, and I'm not sad about it because 12,000 is SO MANY. I do have some theories.

I have been busy! I have had some important life admin, and also I've been trying to give more time to social stuff during the Gender Census just to avoid the hyperfocus downsides.

The new survey provider (Tally) is an LLM-filled façade of work displacement that I've had to pour my scarce time and energy into mitigating after the point-of-no-return and I'm a bit worried about the fallout regarding data quality and also quantity.

Bit stressed about that second one!!!!

BUT the survey is going, and as always the responses are epic and fascinating, and the more the merrier. I am hoping that I've run into all the problems I'm going to run into and done everything I can about them, and now I will be free to concentrate on promotion again.

I have grown to realize a lot of you severely underestimate just how much antiblackness we have to swallow for the sake of our personal peace and our livelihoods. I'm not saying that to be mean or to make you go into a guilt spiral- that would be a useless reaction anyway- but I do want you to consider it. Y'all are very used to not having to hear that feedback bc we've been forcibly socialized into accepting that you won't take it well and often have the power to make it not worth our while to speak. For anybody not caught up: Tennessee just passed a new map that pretty much makes it so black neighborhoods have no power in local votes. Two things about this. While protestors were chanting "No Jim Crow", white Tennessee lawmakers were caught laughing on video. On top of this, Representative Justin Pearson and his brother KeShaun Pearson were arrested for trying to give their takes on the matter (which is not only their legal right but literally his job). If you give a shit about black people, help fight this. We can't allow a return to Jim Crow.

Additional information: State lawmakers have been gunning for Pearson and Jones nearly their entire terms. Most notably, in 2023, the House expelled them for participating in a protest at the Capitol. Their districts had to have special elections to have them reinstated.

Pearson is one of the plaintiffs of a lawsuit seeking an injunction against the redistricting.

The city most affected by the redistricting is Memphis, where locals are fighting against xAI's data center, which has been operating with very little oversight and is poisoning the people who live there. Here is a previous post on that with more information and more sources.
