Do you ever think about how transphobes on this site get to break the user guidelines endlessly with no repercussions but a trans woman will get nuked from orbit for content that actually doesnt violate the guidelines
I’m going to take a nap, and when I get back, it better be back to normal, timblr
When has it ever been normal pukicho
Every single day, as I see leftist activists and political commentators simping for the most evil, bloodstained, fascist regimes imaginable, ignoring the indescribably vast human suffering caused by these regimes, while simultaneously denouncing imperfect and problematic democracies that nevertheless do have a semblance of rights and freedoms for its citizens as the root and cause of all evil in the world, I am absolutely astounded that I ever thought I had any values in common with these people.
I’m not reinventing the wheel by saying this, but dehumanisation is bad actually, even when you do it to “bad” people.
Dehumanising even Nazis and terrorists just removes the obligation and responsibilities we all have to understand how radicalisation into violent extremism happens, how seemingly ordinary people can become convinced that mass murder is a moral course of action.
No one who becomes an extremist thinks of themselves as monstrous, they truly believe that all of their actions have a just reason and if only they could make everyone else understand, everything will be fine.
Human beings can be evil, cruel, and vicious. Pretending that only inhuman monsters can participate in and justify atrocities stops anyone who thinks of themselves as normal and moral from questioning their ideas or their actions and as we have seen, that is decidedly not a good thing.
No. Nazis and the fascists ARE the exception. They made a conscious choice in a world where what they chose to become is undoubtedly and without exception characterized as the very definition of evil. They actually made that choice, and were fine with it when presented with a straight 80 years of every piece of media who, when in doubt or in a pinch used Nazis as their villains cos, hey. Who's more evil than nazis or fascists? I will unreservedly dehumanize nazis. They broke the intolerance compact. They deserve what they goddamn get.
Here's the thing. I understand the impulse to want to say that they are getting what they deserve. However, invariably dehumanization gets shifted onto more vulnerable members of our community.
What I mean is that people take what they hate the most and turn minorities (religious minorities, racial/ethnic minorities, queer and trans folks, etc) into that thing.
If you are an American, than you have probably seen this happening a lot with trans people and immigrants. Trans people just trying to live their lives become evil deviant pedophiles, even though we should both know this isn't true. Similarly, immigrants have become criminals and illegal aliens. This is where dehumanization leads. You can see similar issues echoed across history.
You can abhor bigots and find their ways of thinking and behaving vile, I sure as hell do, but I would caution against saying they are less than human. Because I have studied the history and know where that leads and trust me it is no where positive.
This is the thing:
OP is not calling on everyone to sympathize with nazis. OP is reminding people that dehumanization is a tool of oppression and it always always always destroys you. Not just that, the normalization of dehumanization is radioactive; it expands outward and poisons more than just it's target. It absolves you of resposiblity for how you treat those you dehumanize. It's a road that leads absolutely nowhere. There are *no* exceptions. This is not about what feels good or righteous, it's about the unrewarding dirty work of holding up the pillars of humanity.
I really need folks on the left to start considering the high likelihood that left-wing spaces are targeted by bad actors that want you to lose all of the integrity, education, and community building skills that you may otherwise have had because you are angry and terrified of the people in power. Destroying a democracy isn't just about stoking it's ugliest impulses, it's about dismantling the best impulses, and radicalizing you into abandoning the capacity for kindness. It's about training you to ignore stablizing voices or the voices of those who you hit in the crossfire.
Humanization and empathy and the willingness to sit with your feelings and try to understand people are the fundamental tools of civilization. They are the building blocks that keep society together even in the wake of a disaster or oppressive regimes. Without these tools, we are just cannibalizing ourselves.
I know it feels safer to think of those causing the most harm as monsters who exist outside of humanity. Because it means we don't have to look at this moment as a grim, humiliating reflection of the worst impulses of humanity, and the miles our society still has to go to actually dismantle exploitative, cruel systems. Justice that *lasts* does not come from purging everything with hellfire, it comes from using love and connection as a radical force for change. it comes from rebuilding education systems and social safety nets and communities.
That doesn't mean hold hands with nazis. It means recognizing these same authoritarian, cruel impulses within yourself before you start mimicking them. And quite frankly, considering the amount of blatant, vile, and dangerously antisemetic rhetoric flooding left wing spaces in the wake of the Epstein case, I don't want to hear shit about how fine and cool the left thinks dehumanization is.
When Audre Lorde said, "The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house," this is exactly what she was talking about.
We can talk about the inherent slippery slopes of dehumanization all day (and we really should talk about it). However, I feel like we often overlook a prudent concern, the egg before the chicken maybe, that dehumanization shifts accountability, no-true-scottsman style. And what a relief that would be off everyone's backs, that surely we, the reader, the student, the not-Nazi, the human, could never be that which has been readily labeled inhuman. Unfortunately, believing oneself to be immune to propaganda or bias or cognitive distortions does nothing but make one even more susceptible to them. There are not exceptions to this rule, on principle, because to resist these pitfalls requires constant vigilance and self-reflection. Believing oneself to belong to a separate sort of people, safe from the failings of those labeled ontologically distinct from the whole of humanity, does nothing to protect against this.
We have been seeing the consequences of this fallacy in real time. There is an eagerness to conflate "inhuman" and "inhumane," because the reality is less appealing. This is humanity. It cannot be fixed or guarded against without facing that fact head-on.
Even at just the most basic literal “true or false” level, dehumanization is just factually incorrect.
However much it may be convenient to believe a terrible person is not human and did not arrive at doing terrible things for human reasons, they are and they did.
It’s a lie that inherently warps your perception of the world, and damages your ability to accurately understand and assess it.
Which makes it very self-defeating, because you cannot accurately predict or prevent something you do not accurately understand.
Both of the following have been said or alluded to upthread, but I want to repeat them here side by side because I think they need to be in conversation with each other:
If you dehumanize people who do evil things, then it becomes very easy to fall into a pattern of thinking that excuses and denies your own bad behavior. For example, if only monsters are racist, and you are not a monster, then nothing you do can be racist, even if the people impacted by your behavior are telling you otherwise.
If you dehumanize ANYONE, then it becomes very easy to excuse doing evil things to them – it’s not really evil because they’re not really human. For example, if you think that no human should be subject to torture, but Nazis aren’t human so torturing them is ok, you have now taken a stance that torture is ok sometimes.
Because the two of these together turn into a loop where you dehumanize a group of people, do terrible things to them because they’re monsters and they deserve it, and then insist what you did wasn’t that bad, because nothing you do is truly that bad, you’re not a monster, you’re a human!
The Nazis did terrible things to Jews because they saw Jews as less than human. And many Nazis thought that what they were doing was good – righteous even, because they were just getting rid of an inhuman threat to good people everywhere. I cannot stress this enough – many Nazis believed that Jews were causing legitimate suffering because they were doing evil things. So when you dehumanize a group of people and then say it’s ok to be terrible to them, even if your reason is because they’re doing bad stuff, you’re thinking like a Nazi. And you can think like a Nazi because you’re human and they were too.
And that’s the thing. If you come at it from the perspective that someone can give up their humanity by being monstrous enough toward a group of people, and that excuses your monstrous behavior toward them, then you’ve just become the thing you claim to hate. And we can sit in that cycle forever, or we can acknowledge that sometimes humans are pretty fucked up, ourselves included, and try to figure out a better way forward.
Listen, okay, listen.
The ABSOLUTE BEST Hitler diss I ever heard was on a podcast called Conspiracy Theories. One of the worst men to ever exist, right, you could find horrible things to call him all day.
You need to imagine this said with the same level of disgust as someone whose cat has just brought them something headless but still wriggling:
"A mediocre art school reject who ruined a perfectly good mustache."
FUCKING HELL, there's not enough ice in the universe known and unknown for that burn. Hitler was vain. There's an extremely dark but not entirely untrue joke that his response to not getting into art school was the worst overreaction in history.
But it also forces us to look at him as a human being. The things that would hurt him are extremely human. He liked to be perceived as a good-looking, knowledgeable, and fashionable man. He was from Bavaria, which was treated by Germany in the 1910s and 1920s much like America treats Appalachia now, and he wanted to prove he was well-educated and worldly. He loved to paint, and while his views on art were pretty stick-in-the-mud, he also loved classical artists.
And that's uncomfortable. If I tell you I know a guy, loves his wife, adores dogs and kids, doesn't smoke, barely even drinks except for a beer once in awhile, artist, really charismatic...and then I tell you I'm talking about Adolf Hitler, that's really fucking uncomfortable, isn't it? How many of those traits do you share? How many do your loved ones have in common with him?
You have to sit with that discomfort in order to understand how to not become what you hate.

Not feminist as in "women should be included in the draft" but feminist as in "being drafted is a violation of bodily autonomy for any gender".
The draft should not exist. Drafting people into the military is a violation of human rights. You should not be able to force someone to risk their life. If you can't find enough people who care about a conflict to keep it going then it simply shouldn't keep going. You can't even force someone to donate a kidney using government power, why the fuck can you force them to donate their whole body and life to a cause they don't agree with or don't care about?

I will never forgive anyone who sees this post and chooses silence.I write these words with a broken heart, watching my daughter Iman suffer in front of me while I can do nothing for her. She is a child who should be living her childhood with laughter and safety, not enduring pain and fear every day.
Iman needs a bone-cutting surgery, and any delay will make her condition worse. The war has taken everything from us, even my daughter’s right to proper treatment. As a father, I feel helpless every time I hear her cry from pain, and all I can do is hold her and try to comfort her.
All I care about is saving my daughter Iman and providing the treatment she desperately needs before it’s too late. Please, do not ignore the suffering of an innocent child.

She is dying. My little niece’s lips are torn open from the freezing cold in Gaza. Ignoring this could cost her life.
Her lips are cracked and bleeding, not just dry. She is too small to explain her pain, but she feels it every moment.
This may look small, but it is unbearable for her. Please donate urgently to treat her and buy milk before it’s too late.

This is not news for us.
My family and my four children are living in a fragile shelter in the cold. We are trying to rent a small warm place to protect our kids. This is our real life, not a headline.
If you can help or share, it truly matters.
“Many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, ‘What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.’ Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope.”
— Vincent Van Gogh
“If I am worth anything later, I am worth something now. For wheat is wheat, even if people think it is a grass in the beginning.”

dude.
I wish more people used Magic the Gathering's Color Pie instead of D&D's alignment all of the time.
Like, saying a character embodies the selfishness and impulsivenes of Red Black offers more depth than Chaotic Evil
It’s substantially deeper.
Good enough for me
The Colors of Magic
[as it applies to Character types]
I hate Good vs Evil as a Character alignment choice. Hate hate HATE hate. I’m sorry, but Good and Evil can be measured along many axes, and fucking nobody wakes up in the morning and goes “golly I sure do love being Evil! Gonna go make the world worse on purpose because I’m just so awful!”
Get the fuck outta here with that Protestant-ass characterization. I got something better for you:
[Watsonian; the colors of magic are drawn from different landforms, such as islands or mountains, and are characteristics of a type of magical currency called Mana which serves as the mechanical resource used to cast spells.]
[Doylist: each color has its own philosophies and opinions and perspectives about the world that influence Design beyond simple aesthetics]
Hence:
Each Color has its own axioms about Good/Evil!
White: Without Rules, without Order, without Law, there is only Chaos, and Good cannot exist amongst Chaos. We must all do our part.
{I’m gonna use pink for White because it’s the most “power of heart” color}
Blue: Ignorance inevitably results in Evil; Good can only be accomplished with Knowledge. Even distasteful or horrifying Knowledge has Utility.
Black: People will label anything that they Like as “Good” and whatever they dislike as “Evil.” Whoever has the most Power gets to dictate what that means in practice.
Red: Ya wanna know what’s Evil? A single man ordering around thousands of others! “Evil Empire” is redundant, all Empires are “Evil.”
Green: The nature of Evil is to Take more than is Needed, to Exploit, and to Exclude. If one wishes to be Good, one should endeavor to be Respectful, Generous, and Harmonious.
—-
As you can see, this gives us substantially more dimensionality for characterization.
So let’s flesh this out
Your standard high fantasy village is in grave peril. The village elders confer, and a champion is chosen to go forth to save the village.
Why is the village in peril?
Red: A despotic Tyrant has been building an Empire, conquering kingdom after kingdom and bringing them to their knees. Even if you surrender, your culture and way of life will be destroyed.
Green: This village has long been a haven for Outcasts, Misfits, Freaks, and Weirdos. It’s tucked away, not very rich, but rich in Love and Family and very nice hand crafts. Unfortunately, it sits on top of a large copper vein that the Imperial Treasury wants to exploit, and you all are very much in the way.
White: Your village has long suffered raids from bandits, barbarians, and outlaws, and the strain of recovering each time is becoming too great; something must be done.
Blue: The land suffers under the iron-fisted rule of a despotic tyrant. Your village has discovered the secret to his awful power and how to destroy him. Unfortunately, he knows that you know.
Black: Truth be told, your village isn’t actually “in peril” (at least, not any more than usual). Nobody sent you. You were not chosen. But there is Evil afoot, and you are offended by this Evil, and you will see to it personally that it ends.
I'm at work atm but yes all of this. You understand the complexity beyond just Good Vs Evil and how the colors are both a simple and complex character building tool. And you haven't even gone over the beauty behind wedges/shards (yet?)
Chaotic good? You would do good above all else? How? Because using the color pie you've got White Red, a passionate fight for justice, almost zealot like.
White Blue, perhaps justice at the cost of some personal freedoms? A calm controlling fight because they know best
Or White Black, justice for you and yours. A fight where the ends justify the means and history is written by the winners.
I could classify all of those as Chaotic Good, but they're all technically different.
cracks knuckles
Chaotic Good:
[in a Dystopian Punk setting]
Blue: A digital archivist sits at a bank of monitors, collecting, preserving, and distributing banned books, explicit art, and radical music.
Black: “Why? Because fuck ‘em, that’s why. Who says they’re the Good Guys? Them? You gotta open your eyes, man.”
Red: “I just feel like, if you wanna live in a Free Society, you gotta occasionally inconvenience those who are accustomed to getting whatever they want.”
Green: The Secret Police would kill him on the spot if they knew how many Scapegoats he had smuggled to safety. He had no great love for these people, but as far as he was concerned they were innocent and did not deserve to die.
White: [Actual Public Face of The Resistance. Wrote The Manifesto. Spends most of The Revolution de facto imprisoned.]
I don't really get this yet (especially the difference between Red and Black tbh) but I'm going to read more about it because it is cool
You see, the colors are partially defined by their relationship to each other; they don’t fully make sense without discussing all 5. So.
Red is also an ally of Green, whereas Black is allied with Blue. They both hate White.
What does this mean?
You probably noticed that both Red and Black are Selfish; their motivations are intrinsic, and they do not believe that they owe the world anything. This is what we mean when we say they are both “enemies of White”, as White in this context is the color of self-sacrifice, of giving yourself away.
But they disagree on other points.
Red and Blue are enemies. Blue is ultimately concerned with Control; of the self, of others, of the laws of reality itself. It pursues knowledge, and treasures it, but generally does not believe that it should be free to all. Blue gatekeeps.
Red hates all of that.
Black? Black is fine with it. Considers it useful, even. Black and Blue are allies. They get along fine. See, Black is much more likely to have minions than companions; more likely to desire sycophants than advisors. Additionally, Black and Blue both understand Politics.
Vise versa; Black and Green are enemies. Can’t stand each other. Green thinks Black is an ego-driven narcissist and will absolutely call them out on it. Green doesn’t take any one person very seriously. Green is a big fan of councils and democracy; Green likes community gardens and libraries. And when Black tries to pull a power grab, tries to assert dominance, do you know who will be standing right next to Green saying “not on my watch?” Red.
Red and Green get along fine. They both appreciate the world for what it is. They’re not trying to conquer or subjugate it. Red says “Strength is Freedom” and Green says “Strength is Responsibility” but they both agree that things like political machinations and inherited titles are a subversion of The Way Things Should Be.
So.
Yes, Black and Red are both Selfish, they do not consider The Community to be their personal responsibility. But. They have very different opinions on the subject of Authority.
I've been playing MTG (Magic the Gathering) since 2010/2011. And let me tell you, @asteroidtroglodyte has put the color wheel of MTG Into alignments PERFECTLY. While I could add to it, I am under no illusion that I could do any better or even as well as they have. Even if you know nothing of MTG, you should read this in its entirety because it is so painfully accurate that it feels good.
And if there is ever more additions? I shall be here waiting because this is pure gold.
(Ah yea, validation, that’s the good stuff)
Cracks knuckles
[The color pie performs a]
Casino Heist
White: The Organizer, the Team Leader, the Mastermind. They’re not even in it for The Money; they’re gonna give most of it away, donate it to charity or something. Their principle contribution is the team itself: knowing the right people, being able to convince them to join this mad scheme, coordinating them through The Big Plan. Nobody else is capable of wrangling a Crew like this.
Blue: The Technical Wizard, Master of Gadgets, Hacker of Computers. The actual technology involved is irrelevant; this is the person who understands the arcane secrets: they have Keys to The Backdoors; they know exactly how long the Important Door is vulnerable; they know the things the Casino doesn’t want them to know. They will spend the money gaining more control in their life: more anonymity, debts settled, perhaps a new identity.
Black: The Face, The Impersonator, The Confidence Artist. Gets recruited to The Crew when the White interrupts them in the middle of a Confidence Scheme. Consummate liars, actors, impersonators; they can be whatever, or more precisely whoever, is required by The Heist. In it for the money. You can always trust them… to act in their own self interest. Sex appeal part of the toolkit almost by default.
Red: The Escape Artist, Driver of Getaway Vehicles, Captain of The Exit Strategy. Unfazed by Chaos, unruffled by changes to The Plan. Generally heavily ADHD coded, with a pinch of Adrenaline Junky sprinkled on top. Master of vehicles, evader of Law Enforcement, the one responsible for ensuring everyone’s freedom at the end of The Plan.
Green: The Muscle. Martial Artist, Mercenary, or Military Veteran? A good question that will never be adequately answered. The Casino is very likely to resist being robbed, and Green is here to Apply Force. The precise nature of that force will depend on genre and rating, but if there’s gonna be a showdown with law enforcement or security, that scene will be Green’s moment of glory.
If I may offer a prompt for even more delectable color pie shenanigans: a protest/rally of some sort. Mayhaps even a little rioting sprinkled on top?
Mtg has great worldbuilding unfortunately its in mtg.
oh my god.
