Illya von Einzbern (Child): Page of Blood

You know, it occurs to me that Homestuck is a creation myth about gods who give birth to themselves, and Illya is the ONLY one of there grail children that can't be said to have done so. Amazing. What a terrible little creature she is. I adore her endlessly.

Anyway, Illya has many charming character traits, but her absolute adoration for her friends and family are top of the list, right next to her immense cowardice. The self-conflicted Page of Blood title is a natural fit not only for her immense, world shaking love of Miyu, Chloe and Shiro, nor her literally being a source of life fuel for Chloe, both of which are very Blood behaviours.

She's also just pitiful, absolutely the saddest baby, until she busts out these insane growth curves. Classic pagery.

Chloe von Einzbern: Prince of Rage

This is a really basic read that I don't think needs much justifications. Chloe appears during impossible situations to break barriers and let Illya achieve her goals.

Mostly by way of overwhelming destructive force.

Miyu Edelfelt: Bard of Light.

Miyu is also a self manifested god, amazing, what is even happening with these magic cups?? Why do they want so badly to be Real Girls??

Anyway, Miyu is a Bard of Light because she is a channel for ultimate destruction forced into an inconsolately passive role, and worst of all the force is literally just "other people getting constantly really lucky." I mean, damn, girl lost the lottery at birth. Oof.

Bonus the main timeline: adult!Illya is a Bard of Light too; I think being a grail kinda does that to you. Shiro is the Heir of Space because literally there were 3 anime about him inheriting othes people's space powers come on. Rin is a Thief of Heart and a damned good one at that. Sakura simply deserves not to have to play SGAME let the poor child have a break mein Gott (Witch of Void). Saber is a fucking sprite obviously.

So! Fate and Homestuck have been a special interest for about a decade now (I’m sorry Dean, but I can’t stand you.) and yeah this might be a several month old post but it’s 3am let’s party. So this is my take.

I would have to say that Shirou Emiya is a Knight no question. When you consider the masks he wears and his future as EMIYA/Nameless there’s no other class I can see fitting. Aspect wise it’s actually difficult, because as Archer he fulfills the role of a Knight of Time narratively, but those powers aren’t inherently his, they belong to Alaya, not himself. It leaves me stuck between Doom, and then the Rage/Hope dichotomy. Because Doom Loves Shirou. He and Lancer keep meeting because he didn’t die when reality said he should (thanks Rin) so the universe keeps throwing these assholes at each other even when they don’t recognize each other. But I think Hope/Rage as class inversions match Shirou and Archer the best. Whether he’s a Knight of Rage or Knight of Hope I’m too tired to say for certain. Buuuut I think he relied on false hope in the beginning and came into his own as a Knight of Rage in the Heaven’s Feel route while Archer was him leaning too heavily into Rage.

As for Rin? Well her character is ultimately defined by her relationship with other people isn’t it? She’s always the deutertagnoist never the protagonist. Her relationship to her servant, to Shirou, to Sakura, to Hakuno, her father. It’s always someone else defining her character but I don’t feel like it’s in a lacking a sense of self Heart Way, and more Blood way. One of the best analysis I’ve seen of her character pointed out that Rin puts herself in the position of people owing her so they won’t leave her. With her experience I think she might be a Mage of Blood.

Poor Sakura I can’t see as anything but a Doom player, but that’s also because she seems to fulfill the role of Maid better than Witch to me. Because while she does snap and go heavy on her aspect, she doesn’t start off bubbly the way witch’s are like to do and doesn’t settle back into being an energetic person. I think Maid of Doom fits her best, but I could see an argument for Witch of Doom. Because while she does have the obscurity of a void player, I think the tragedy of Doom is more overwhelming to her story.

Ilya is the hardest for me because so much of her character is best explored in the VN, and unfortunately she doesn’t explores in things like Extra, AND I don’t think it’s fair to consider proper timeline Ilya and Kaleid as the same person the way I normal do Nasuverse characters. Narratively she bounces so far all over the place depending on the route and choices you make it’s hard to choose. She was born to die, a vessel for the holy grail. Ironically my first thought was Blood, but I think Ilya is the Heart player here. Possibly the Most Unhealthy Page of Heart I can think of in media. Which could possibly work for Kaleid too… hm.

This is all completely true and correct, of course, but on the topic of changes that irreversibly change a child’s body, prithee, go and talk to a fucking ballet dancer.

If you start ballet at 16, you are too old to ever expect to be able to do it seriously. If you start at 12 you’re too old. If you want to do ballet as a serious thing, as a career, you need to start at like eight years old or even younger, because your bones and joints need to be trained while they’re still flexible in order for you to be able to perform many of the required motions and stances of ballet. In particular, you need to be able to perform turnout of the hips, but all of your joints in your legs and feet will be affected, and this irreversibly changes your body.

And yet! Nobody talks about this as a negative thing! Little girls say they want to be ballet dancers, and if their parents have enough money, that’s what they get to be! Does it cause problems in later life? Yeah, sometimes! Often, even! But nobody talks about that because it’s a thing for cis people to do and so naturally it’s all fine!

If you play a lot of soccer and for longer it will affect the entirety of legs, muscle and bone, and not for the better. Almost every soccerplayer in the world has a shortening of the back of the thigh muscle that will cause pain as they age. Most develop severe knee problems by the age of 30. People don’t age out of sports in general around 30 because they’ve “passed their prime physical condition” in the sense that age has taken it’s toll, but in the sense that the sport itself has taken it’s toll. And yet, no one is advocating against letting children play sports.
