@close-to-the-edge12
me trying to explain my special intrests
I know here on tumblr.org many of you are not that into the sportsball, but I know you love righteous drama and pettiness, and oof, do we have some for you over in football land.
So Hungary, as you may've heard, has put out some anti-LGBT legislation that would ban the depiction or promotion of homosexuality to people under 18. It's not quite law yet but it's just got to get through their president Viktor Orban who is, unfortunately, a shit.
Meanwhile, football, no the other kind of football- the one with the round ball, is currently having a big European tournament. Euro 2020. Yeah, they didn't rename it. Doesn't matter. Germany were due to play Hungary last night in Munich and they asked the governing body of the tournament for permission to light up the stadium in a rainbow. Like this:
But they said no. Specifically, they said no while dressed in a rainbow pfp and claiming that the rainbow isn't a political symbol:
And Germany, bless them, looked at that and said, ooh bitch it's on now.
Munich city hall got out the banners
Here are the fans going to the match
The German captain Manuel Neuer in his rainbow armband (which UEFA had previously made noises about disciplining him for, because they're bastards all around)
A brief selection of the many stadiums across Germany that lit up in solidarity
And last but not least this absolute madlad who ran onto the pitch during Hungary's anthem
Viktor Orban stayed at home and sulked, and Hungary got knocked out of the tournament.
So the subplot of Holes is that Kate Barlow deals with the politically-sanctioned execution of her black boyfriend—who unlawfully kissed a white woman who was in love with him!!!—by becoming a serial killer who targets racist/sexist white dudes who harassed her, were rejected, then went after her boyfriend as revenge from the depths of the “friend zone”.
Go off Louis Sachar, let em know!
Don’t forget the main plot was a damning satire of the brokenness and inherent racism of the American justice and prison systems! Louis Sachar does not fuck about
It always fuck me up that older people don’t understand how this story is as essential to most american children as Gone with the Wind or Mary Poppins was.
unironically, this is one of the best books/movies for young people that exists
Kissing Kate Did Nothing Wrong
And the technical writing of Holes is perfect. Like, it’s one of the most technically-perfect books ever written. Basically any plotting or pacing or characterization issue you’re having, read Holes and really study how Sachar did it. THE LIZARDS! THE LIZARDS.
the twisty prophecies! the lizards! the lipstick! the humor! this book doesn’t play. a true classic.
Having the hiccups is how it feels to be poisoned in a video game

“Emerald Curtain”
Over the years, I’ve seen the aurora materialize as green, purple, pink, reddish and white lights. I’ve also seen all manner of patterns and effects, from flashing to pulsing lights. On this particular night, they manifested as softly flowing green curtains in the sky.

Trainability in cats is a funny thing.
My cats understand and will obey a number of verbal commands, one of which is “go away”. I don’t use it often, but if they’re bugging me and I’m trying to work or doing something that could be dangerous for cats, I can tell them to go away, and off they go - they’ll only keep pestering me if there’s a serious problem they need me to look at.
That said, their idea of a serious problem that requires my attention is somewhat eccentric. Previous instances have included:
There was an unfamiliar car parked across the street
Their water bowl was four inches to the left of its usual position
One of them had puked on the stairs and they didn’t want to walk past it
It was raining
One of them saw a weird bug
These are all very important things that required your attention. They’re doing a good job.
Dogs really aren’t much better. I teach all my dogs the command “show me”. How it works is if the dog needs something but I’m having trouble understanding what exactly they’re trying to tell me, I say “show me” and they lead me to whatever the problem is. Usually they lead me to a real problem (like a toy that got stuck under the couch, their water bowl is empty, etc). But sometimes they want me to fix things like this-
They pulled the covers off my bed and now they want me to put the covers back
They put their ball on top of the ottoman but the ottoman won’t throw it for them
The cat is sleeping and won’t chase them
A flower fell off the potted plant
The cat is sitting in a box and they don’t like it
One of them lost their bandana
The cat won’t take the toy they’re trying to give her
The cat DID take the toy they gave her and now they want it back
These are all very important things that required your attention. They’re doing a good job.
“You seeing this?!” (via)
cats are little narcissists because they will see you upset or troubled and they’ll think “you know what would help? a healthy dosage of ME” and they’ll headbutt you and snuggle you.
anyway it DOES work so I can’t fault them
Oh hey btw, while “totem animal” and “spirit animal” are native american concepts far more complicated than simply looking at a creature and going “mood.”, there’s a finnish concept of sieluneläin, soul animal, a creature that is alike to you in soul (in the finnish pagan spirituality, one’s soul is actually three things, henki, luonto and itse/sielu, out of which the last one is what is distinctly you, personality and temperament). The term soul animal no longer has ritual or religious meaning, and it can’t really be appropriated. If you see a corgi laying down in a creek just fucking letting water run over her because she can’t bother to move and think “same”, that’s your soul animal, and you’re completely free to use the term unless you’re swedish.
“unless you’re Swedish” lololol
Some grudges have valid staying power.
“this ancient spiritual concept has no real meaning anymore but you know what does? hating the fucking Swedes”
Last Line Tag: Post the last line that you wrote, then tag as many writeblrs as your heart fancies, humans!
Tagged by @druidx during an unknown time in my flakey-flakiness. Probably in the last year or so, but it’s debatable, because I’ve now (debatably) been around for a year and a half, and that does not help my vague idea of time at all. I’m so sorry for the wait, human, and thank you for the tag!
“It’s three in the morning, and it’s dark,” Marcus defended the small tendrils of flame that’d been carving through the bleak apartment as he navigated. The fire was almost hypnotic, in a way, Gabriel thought, with how it twisted around the palm of Marcus’ hand and licked at the curves, extended a warm, orange glow throughout the room as it danced at his fingertips. “And it’s hardly the worst thing you’ve ever seen. Or are we forgetting Paul? Because he’s more of a health hazard on his best days, and doesn’t strike me as someone that’d just illuminate things. He’d light up the place and become an accidental arsonist, instead. I think I’m doing fairly well, comparatively.”
Okay, so. Before I confess the wip it’s from - what’s the time frame in the way of just considering wips as new? Does a month still count? Can I lie through a burst of hysterical giggling and straight up tell you that it’s old, just on the burner? Or is that, you know. Not at all correct?
Anyways - it’s from French Boys. The name’s absolutely pending change, and liable to become Clockworks, instead. It’s still on the table, though, and still can’t really figure out names for the life of me, so - there’s that. We have magic and a bit of poor judgement and vague insomniac tendencies going on here, which all condense into Marcus becoming a walking fire hazard and startling one of his flatmates, Gabriel. Gabriel, in turn, startles Marcus. It’s a miracle they haven’t burned down the place sooner, in all honesty.

hi i’m here to talk about characters with aches
aches from old injuries. finicky battle wounds, stiff joints from being restrained in captivity - things that their body never erased, pain that reminds them every day of what they went through. maybe it’s obvious, like a limp, or maybe it’s something that is only clear with early morning stretches and groans. maybe the aches grow worse in rainy weather, or when they think about the injury that caused the soreness.
a character who has to live with aches, and the painful memories behind them.
