This has been my main argument against "AI" from the very beginning.

OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.

And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this.

Just to say one more thing about these correct tags from @darlingofdots : the search engine claim is my biggest pet peeve.

The point of a search engine is you have a big bag of items. Webpages, or books in a library, or marbles in bag. Whatever. Each item has attributes, and what strict search should do is return to you exactly which items in the bag have the attributes. All the red marbles, or all the books written in French.

Fuzzy search can return "nearby" things. Like maybe you ask for all the red marbles. A strict search either gives you marbles that are only red, or any marble that contains red at all. Both are not super useful if the marbles in the back are multicolored. A fuzzy algorithm might use knowledge of a training set (whether or not a person would call a given marble "red") and use that to give you back a set of marbles that are reasonable matches for the attribute.

LLMs cannot do this. It is mathematically impossible. They take in large text corpora and then process it in such a way that makes finding the original source literally impossible. In math terms we say it's "non-invertible"---the pathway back to the original data set has been broken. It's a one way function.

What LLMs can do is take in a query and then pass it (or a fuzzed-out version of it) to a true search engine, get back the results as additional input and then output a "summary" back to the prompter. I don't like to call it a true summary because it's just a statistical approximation of what a shortened version of the results might look like. This method can have errors in many directions: omissions, excess inclusions, "hallucinated" entries (I don't like using that term, but it's popular).

There's also the issue that formal logic was invented precisely to avoid the inherent ambiguity of natural language. The word "and" in English, for instance, can mean OR or XOR or AND. Proper search engines (like the one on AO3) use logical operators for this exact reason. Sometimes it's possible to discern by context, but sometimes natural language is irreducibly ambiguous.
