Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis in
THE DEFIANT ONES (1958) dir. Stanley Kramer
From "you're still angry about me trying to pull the white card and leave you to get lynched, wow" to getting shot in an already khalass arm to give Cullen a chance to live, first time getting chained up ever fixed somebody
Even in left wing circles it’s literally like pulling teeth trying to get people to take misogyny seriously as a real problem that is killing women and ruining their lives everywhere all the time and not like a haha silly 1950s problem we just make jokes about now
Sidney Poitier visits Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis on the set of "Some Like It Hot"
any of the make a wish kids could have just wished for global communism but they’re all selfishly obsessed with lego and marvel
a long time ago in a discussion of non-toxic masculinity, a podcaster i was listening to said that he felt positively masculine when he (anecdote simplified) noticed that his friend looked hungry and made sure he had a sandwich. and that's lived in my head since because there's, like, a lot to unpack there, right?
[n.b. in the rest of the post read "traditionally designated as" before "masculine" or "feminine"]
feeding the family is certainly a masculine virtue, but only in the sense of providing money or labor that allows food to be made. noticing that people need food and providing specific food items is strongly feminine. so already we're at a place where the thing that makes the speaker feel specifically masculine is something that's most commonly a feminine trait.
and then there's the really obvious thing, which is that this is something that in no way needs to be gendered: this is an act that makes the speaker feel like a good friend. the goal is, of course, to define a positive masculinity against the posited aggressive, violent "true" masculinity of the right; but it highlights the impossibility of defining virtues as specifically masculine or feminine. if something is virtuous (watching out for a friend's well-being), then it is virtuous for everyone. the artificiality of the constructs "masculine" and "feminine" is made crystal clear by the fact that, in attempting to outline a specific masculine virtue, the speaker immediately chooses one that has historically been feminine.
there’s this thing that happens on this website that’s like the opposite of pissing on the poor and is far better but also still somewhat annoying when you post something where the point is implied and then someone else adds the point you were making in a reblog as though they are like, adding something new and insightful to the post. eg you can post something about a female scientist from the 1800s having her intellect undervalued in her time and someone else is going to add like “that’s so crazy… i think they were treating her this way due to misogyny” and like well yes. i mean… yeah. you got it
explained to an 8 year old that once a fruit is ripe you only have so much time until it rots so you have to eat it soon and she said so i'll never be able to keep it perfect like this forever? no and there are about a million pieces of art for you unrelatedly
the thing about singin' in the rain is they were theeeeee throuple of all time
No Alvin I don't think you can say that word, I know it's part of the original lyrics but Simon is right you're gonna make a lot of people uncomfortable
I really like this website because somebody will be like “there’s nothing wrong with darting out from behind a parked car into traffic, bootlicker” and you can be like okay this clearly evolved from a valid point about how the US is too car-centric. But something happened to it.
heated rivalry season 2 should be a straightforward retelling of the epic of gilgamesh
I'm going to fix everything in the next three hours everyone wish me luck. if i dont then probably ill dig a hole and lie down in it for a bit in the rain/sun/whatever outside looks like these days
the hole isnt even that bad
god I'm such a slut for Chinese eggplant in garlic sauce *decides it’s inaccurate to refer to myself as a slut in light of my minimal sexual activity* if The Enemy discovered my ardor for Chinese eggplant in garlic sauce, they would gain a significant strategic advantage
