I will admit, having watched the latest Lindsey Ellis video on the Romantasy Formula; I think you could make an argument that the series is a gender swapped romantasy. Ordinary Guy gets swept up in court politics and into an arranged relationship with a dangerous queen...
I love this writers two previous dramas My Liberation Notes and My Mister, so this was a must watch for me as well. I was not disappointed.
What I Liked
The writing was excellent. It fits in with the writer's other shows, but has its own interesting voice. The cast was incredibly stacked as well. None of them were phoning it in. I was especially impressed by Go Youn-jung. I enjoyed her in other dramas (especially Resident Playbook), but this is the first one where I felt like she was allowed to have some range, instead of just being a model first, and an actor second. That being said, I haven't seen her in Alchemy of Souls so maybe she was always pretty good.
What I Didn't Like
The first episode or two is slow and difficult to get into. The show opens at a low point in all of the relationships, all of the characters are annoying and the writing doesn't take hold your hand and tell you why they are the way they are. It feeds you their backstory as the series goes along.
The lead character, who was played excellently, is also super annoying at the beginning. He eventually transitions into a "lovable loser", but I know there are going to be some people who never made that switch.
I also feel like the show didn't give us enough of Byeon Eun-ah (the FL) story. So much of the time, her job was to sit there and passively help the ML. This changed enough by the end that I didn't hate it, but I think it's a weakness still, especially compared to some of the other dramas this writer has done.
On the other hand, maybe if we'd gotten a full 16 episodes, or even just 14, there would have been time to give us those moments. Blame Netflix, or the changing landscape of show business. Which, the show does a fun job of portraying.
TL; DR:
I really enjoyed what I got, and my biggest complaint is that I could have used more. For me, it's not quite as good as My Liberation Notes, but it's less depressing than My Mister (though still a bit heavy) and the show has alot of heart.
I don't usually watch J-Dramas, but I read the book and heard there was a TV show, so I had to watch it...
The Good
This is a pretty good adaptation of the book. The characters are over the top, almost manga-like, which is pretty much how I read the (translated) story. It's all about a convenience store in this small-ish city and the little community that is built around it. The episodes fly by very quickly, and are fun but not very deep.
I'd say the novelist managed to add enough depth that you really cared about what happened, and the TV show had a lighter touch. So you kind of care about the cast, but mostly it's there to entertain and keep you company. A little reminiscent of Gilmore Girls if you're looking for an American equivalent.
The Not So Good
Unfortunately, it's on Prime, it doesn't seem to have much marketing, and there is this big break in the release schedule in Japan, probably due to the World Cup. So I haven't finished the show, and I might not depending upon when my Prime account goes on hold again.
TL; DR:
If you liked the novel, you'll almost certainly enjoy the TV show. Just don't go in expecting something super deep. It's light entertainment, and that's okay.

Given that patent attorneys, especially back then used to have hard science degree, it makes the one about how they know the weight limit on a bridge funnier.
