I'm only a few episodes into yomi no tsugai but i LOVE how much Yuru is basically the polar opposite of ed elric as a character. Ed is a sarcastic little shit who's too rich for his own good but has a rock-solid moral opposition to killing. Yuru appears to be nicer, as he's more outwardly chill and understanding and analytical and is easily starry-eyed by anything that's "how royalty must live", but then he's SO murdery. Buddy boy is ready to kill at the drop of a hat. His allies will be making plans and yuru will be nodding along all calm and then chime in with "understood, I'll leave them alive then" and everyone else will go "YOU HAD BEEN PLANNING ON KILLING THEM?? 😰" Unsupervised outdoor cat of a protagonist. Impeccable.

I’d say Aira is being oddly graceful about this romantic defeat, but I think it’s a sign of her maturity over the series that she’s reached this point

There's an underlying implication I think I'm picking up on in that as time goes on Issho, separate from seeing Kaisei as his own inheritor specifically, is seeing Kaisei as less of an inheritor of Shiguma's Art. So there's a dissonance between Issho's expectations of Kaisei (as his inheritor) and Issho's expectations of Akane (as the most likely candidate to successfully perform Shiguma's Art)

Now, what this actually will mean for the narrative I don't really know, but regardless I'm pretty sure Issho has different expectations and endpoints in mind for the two of them and, as Issho does, will pit them against each other

I think what makes Yomi no Tsugai stand out among 2020s manga so much is how earnest it feels. Thanks to the fact Arakawa already made it in the manga world and clearly has a lot of creative freedom - or surrounds herself with people she meshes with well and it lets her write what she wants rather than ticking boxes

You don't have some stupid fanservice scene the author tries to pass as super deep. You don't have half-assed commentary that'll age like milk in 5-6 years (in fact I think for example Ken's subplot will only get more and more relevant as years go by but I digress). You don't have scenes that feel like the author was trying to force a meme panel (even though I think in a better world tons of scenes would be). There is no "leak culture". There are no powerscaling junkies. There are no moronic popularity polls suddenly impacting the story. Barely relevant characters (like the Kagemoris' gardener) can end up being very important to the story and you'll never expect it. There's just a lot to love and a very clear vision and I can't help but love the series for that

ive been trying for a while to find the right words to articulate the way goys, and especially the current-left goys, treat and talk the holocaust, how they see being a victim of this massive tragedy that destroyed over half a people as a mark of specialness, or privilege, how it grants you martyrdom for the cause of social justice- except when it's jews, of course, because then they're using their victimhood to manipulate people and are acting like it's only about them. and the way they fight over this whole idea of 'who suffered the most during the holocaust [except the jews]', as if the question of who is the biggest victim is a question of who takes the trophy for 'group to be most oppressed'. but anyway i just had the thought that goys seem to treat the holocaust as if it's the golden apple thrown by marx with the inscription 'to the most oppressed' going on. that's the best way i can describe it.

I'm watching the most recent dub episode; in the official English translation for the manga when Yuru asks Ken if he'd like to go to Ethiopia someday, Ken deflects a bit with a comment about how dangerous it is over there at the time, which I thought was a nice subtle moment of sad realism But in the dub for the episode, it's a more generic "yeah, and I can't take the fact that I can still go back for granted" which I think loses impact
