RIP Ozzy Osbourne

Rest in peace, Ozzy Osbourne. I'm forever grateful to my aunt for driving me 4 hours to St. Louis to see him and several others at Ozzfest 2007. The only time I ever saw him in person - as well as Motorhead, Static-X, and many others. Lucky to have that experience, I still think about it often.

Ozzy's legacy has always been incredibly important to me. Black Sabbath songs were some of the first songs I ever learned to play on guitar. His work with Randy Rhoads in his solo career revealed to me the modern possibilities of guitar music and inspired me to study classical guitar. Ozzy himself admits that he can't really sing but he managed to surround himself with some of the most talented musicians to ever do it. The culmination of his collaborators is the biggest foundational building blocks and inspiration to my guitar playing. I would not be the person that I am today without Ozzy's influence.

Finished snapping together a Master Grade Gundam model kit for the first time in years. Gundam Wing is far from my favorite Gundam series but I can't deny my love for the pure edginess of Deathscythe's mechanical design.

Happy with just snapping this together and panel lining for now, but I do want to go back and paint this thing. Also, I really need an action base for this because this aged kit from 2011 does not pose well under the weight of its own gravity.

Small pick-ups from Anime Blues Con over the weekend. The Ramenman from Kinnikuman sofubi toy is so sick.

Picked up The Guyver, American live-action toku. It's great, I've only ever seen a vhs quality version.

Blind bought Psycho Gothic Lolita and Pinnochio 964 blurays.

Chaos and Carnage Tour 2025 in Nashville

Dying Fetus / Cradle of Filth / Fleshgod Apocalypse / Ne Obliviscaris / Undeath

Second time for me seeing Dying Fetus but the first time I got to see them close up. They rip as always. Looking forward to a new album soon.

This was my first time seeing Cradle of Filth, and it was the main reason I've been looking forward to this show for months. The set was amazing. They played material from all over their catalog from classics of the first few albums as well as the more impressive guitar driven stuff from their recent albums.

Fleshgod Apocalypse from Italy was really fun. I went into their set blind and I'll have to check out more of their stuff.

Ne Obliviscaris from Australia was another set I went into blind for. Prog metal featuring violin. I really enjoyed the arrangements and technical guitar playing.

It was great to see Undeath play to a crowd like this. I caught them at Growlers in Memphis a few years ago, so I love to see them keep rising.

Second year in a row attendeding Chaos and Carnage. This might be the most packed turnout I've experienced at Brooklyn Bowl.

It was also very fun to dress up for this. I've never done that before. I had quite a few people complimenting telling me I looked just like Dani, and I had a bunch of people wanting to take a picture and yap with me for a minute.

A much belated look at some of my favorites in comics from September.

Favorite Cover: Cradle of Filth #3 by Meghan Hetrick

All 3 of the horror anthologies I picked up from September - Cradle of Filth, Creepshow, and Things of Nightmares - are great. I think the strongest issue of the 3 was RL Stine's Stuff of Nightmares but the Cradle of Filth horror anthology has been consistently good and this Elizabeth Bathory cover is just so great.

Favorite Panel: Superman Space Age #2 by Mike Russell with Michael + Laura Allred.

I actually wasn't aware of this series until recently and caught up on both. Been a huge fan of The Allreds for a long time and I pick up everything they do. Soace Age has been a fun overview of Superman's life. Liked this panel of Superman with Nixon and Elvis, I like nods to my city I guess.

Favorite Page: Vanish #1 by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman

Slight early spoiler for this - As an edgelord and a 90's kid, I loved the first issue of Vanish. This page was really excellent and unexpected. Really like the concepts here with magic users, extreme violence, and the fact that the former world hero is dealing with rock bottom drug addiction brings an interesting angle. I'm excited to see where this one goes. I don't want to explain too much but you should check it out if it sounds ingesting to you.

Favorite Overall: Hell is a Squared Circle by Chris Condon and Francesco Biagini with Mike Englehart

Daniel Warren Johnson may be putting out one of the best wrestling serials right now with Do A Powerbomb but Hell is a Square Circle shouldn't be overlooked. I really liked this one-shot wrestling, crime noir story a lot. Mark Engelhart's colors really bring this together for me as well. Check it out.

Slothrust / Weakened Friends @ Growlers

Good night. Been to so many many extreme/death metal shows, haven't been toba rock show in a long time. The homie had been a big fan of Slothrust for years and I'm glad to have made it out to see this show.

September 2022 comics stack.

Haven't gotten to read most of these yet because I've been busy preparing and organizing stuff for and from Memphis Comic Expo. I may do a follow up post about stuff from this month. Really looking forward to checking out the new horror books, the super 90's Vanish by Donny Cates, and the Allreds' Superman Space Age comic.

Saw Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island.

This movie was great! It's so wild to me that this got made. This was an adaptation of an omitted episode that was declared by Tomino as being allegedly "not up to quality standards" compared to the rest of the original 70's Gundam series for some reason not specified. The animation is really top quality here, the 3D animation is really seamless and Yasuhiko Yoshikazu's timeless character designs from the 70's have really been brought to life through works like this and Gundam: The Origin. Seeing classic scenes from the series played out with modern animation while retaining its original voice actors is peak fanservice for me.

Memphis Comic Expo 2022 is in the books. Had a great time this year, the first year back after a break.

Expo pictures are from the final hours on Sunday. There were way more people present on Saturday but even on Sunday there was a decently large crowd.

Signed books/collectibles: Everyone I got something signed by were super cool people. Especially James O'barr. Venom Lethal Protector and Spider-Man 2099 had always been a really early part of my comic collection, so it was great to meet the artists after obsessing over those books as a kid. Dan Brereton personalized my Nocturnals book. Denys Cowan signed my The Question #1 (a sentimental book that I was introduced to by friends) and Mark Waid signed my Daredevil #1, a book that's pretty special to me and was one of the few series I stuck with when I started picking up comics on a semi-weekly basis. There were some things I forgot to bring (like my Sozo Maika books) but I'm overall satisfied with everything anyways.

Comic pickups: I already blew through most my budget getting collectibles and things signed so I didn't do a whole lot of digging for comics this year. Of course I managed to grab a lot of manga-centric stuff. Especially stoked on the Adam Warren Dirty Pair run find.

Visited Third Man Records in Nashville for the first time. It's more of a Jack White museum and gift shop than it is a record store but it was still cool to check out. There's a lot of memorabilia for The White Stripes to check out, some vintage music related artifacts, and there were some interactive bits that let you play with pedals and guitars.

I walked out with some Sleep merch because why not.

Went to Grimey's in Nashville for the first time in years.

Picked up Belphagor's new release "The Devils", Ghost in the Shell OST by Kenji Kawai, ✝️ ✝️ ✝️ (crosses) new single on 10", and a 10 year anniversary release Cynic's "Carbon Based Anatomy"

August 2022 comics stack.

Another post in which I should just be writing a blog at this point.

Bigger pull this month than previous months. There's a handful of promising new first issues and starting points out this month with Heart Eyes, 20th Century Men, Predator, Ultraman: The Mystery of UltraSeven, and Detective Comics 1062 + 1063.

There's also some special annual issues from Love & Rockets and the always great Demon series by Peach Momoko from Marvel.

Coming to an end this month was the conclusion of The Closet (I thought this was a fine short series but I don't think I'd recommend it) and Swamp Thing (which I need to catch up on and finish reading).

Favorite Cover: Heart Eyes by Dennis Hopeless + Victor Ibanez on art. Ibanez did the art for the cover and interiors, which just really caught my eye. The first issue is solid - hoping the rest of the series is worth it.

Favorite Page: Demon Days: The Iron Samurai by Peach Momoko. This could have easily also been my favorite overall pick fit the month. Peach Momoko's cartooning is so refreshing to see on the stands, I love everything about it. I savor each issue since they only ever come out once for about every 3 months.

Favorite Overall: Do A Powerbomb by Daniel Warren Johnson. The story is about the daughter of a famous wrestler entering an otherworldy tournament to win a chance to use necromancy to bring her mom back to life. So far this book is another great entry in DWJ's bibliography. When it comes to wrestling I'd say I'm a casual enjoyer but I cat recommend this book enough.

The Crow by James O'barr.

Been reading a lot of things from my backlog lately, especially trying to get through books to prepare myself for the 2022 Memphis Comics Expo September 24-25 (@memphiscomicexpo)

I really liked the movie when I was a teenager but never got around to reading the original comic until just recently. For a first time comic from James O'barr in 1989, this book really is great. There is a lot of brutal violence for sure but at the same time this book is poetic and romantic with Eric's love for Shelly.
