Module 16: Costs of Raising a Child

These costs are all an average (they may be higher in some places and lower in others) and also is assuming no insurance is paying for anything.

Costs vary based on:

Geographic area

Type of dwelling (i.e. single-family home, townhouse, etc.)

Whether the family rents or owns their home

Size of the home as it corresponds to family size (i.e. number of bedrooms required based on the number of children and adults)

Age of the home

Those with insurance need to read their plans. It is common for maternity care to be excluded from insurance coverage

Chronic diseases that can precipitate spontaneous abortion: diabetes, celiac disease, and autoimmune conditions, particularly anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome

Although prognosis is good, shock and infection contributes to maternal mortality, especially in low-income countries where those with low social status have less access to high-quality OB care.

Also called male sterilization

Not only should you not douche after intercourse, you shouldn’t do it at all. Period. It is a pointless activity and a waste of money as it has not been proven to actually cleananything (as the vagina cleans itself) and can lead to infections. If there is a change in discharge or smell, it is likely an infection. Please see your doctor as a douche will not clear up any infections.

Module 14: Safe Sex Practices

**Part 5

Temperature method: you take your temperature in the morning every day before you get out of bed – your temperature increases when you ovulate

Cervical mucus method: you check your cervical mucus (vaginal discharge) every day – your mucus looks like raw egg whites

Calendar method: you chart your menstrual cycle on a calendar – you predict your most fertile days

Standard days method: a variation on the calendar method. You track your menstrual cycle for several months to figure out if your cycle is always between 26 and 32 days long — you can’t use this method if it’s longer or shorter. Once you’ve established that your cycle is in the right range, you use another form of birth control (or don’t have vaginal sex) on days 8-19, which is when you’re fertile.

If you want to get pregnant, you can also use these methods to attempt to become pregnant sooner.

Also called the pull-out method

If you want to get pregnant, can begin trying immediately

There is naturally some lag time before the body will allow pregnancy after a birth and primary care physicians may also have their recommended interval between pregnancies

If you want to get pregnant, you can begin trying at any time.

Outercourse would include activities like masturbation and dry humping with your clothes on

Also called female sterilization, tubal ligation, or “getting your tubes tied”

Tubal ligation: permanently closes, cuts, or removes pieces of your fallopian tubes

Bilateral salpingectomy: removes your fallopian tubes entirely.
